Heard the expression 'eat to live, not live to eat'? Sometimes that can be easier said than done... especially lately as we watch delicious foods portrayed on the food channels, but when it's 'work to live, not live to work... These boys really got on board. The only way to stay warm is to have enough firewood and to pack it in to the fireplace.
Emerson takes his new 'chore' very seriously and never comes in the house without bringing a log. He assisted unloading the entire trailer load of firewood, which took well over an hour. As soon as they had unloaded it was time to eat. He managed to sit at the table and immediately fell asleep. He has work to live mastered, but needs a little eat to live willpower.

New Beginnings
A new school year approached and for the first time in 7 years we were involved in the mayhem of getting ready for school. It really cut into the end of our summer. But we made the best of it.
Kenzie was beginning middle school this year and wanted to sport a new fashionable look. We hit the stores and found a few good looks..
These were not school approved but they did help with the shopping monotony!
Sarah and Miles moaned the fact that they had a dress code and their school clothes shopping trip wasn't as exciting an experience. But in an afternoon we were successfully completed.
Next up was the grooming.
Sarah had the full treatment with a great hair cut and an eyebrow waxing.
Mackenzie received the home spa treatment as we tried to figure out why her hair seemed so dry and damaged. We experimented with multiple moisturizing treatments and were finally pleased with some simple natural conditioners. We practiced a few do's and she was ready for her debut at the middle school.
Cooper, the boy with the fastest growing hair in the west, was simply due for a major hair cutting. He certainly was the most expressive of the haircuts. His school neither required a dress code nor did it have an official starting date. For that matter, depending on the person it has a different name. For some it is the Noble Academy, others k12, and lately, the 'Bureau of Noble Education' or B.O.N.E. for short.
Caleb headed out in the real world and went job hunting. His barber's took great pains to groom him well for his future position in the work force.
It must have worked. He landed a fun job at the deli counter at Macey's grocery store. Best perk?! He serves the ice cream.
First day of school arrived and they were ready. Dress code, check. Backpacks, check. Looking good, check. Carpool, check. Lunch, check. Off they went.... The house has been quieter... The adjustment has been going well.
Next up was preschool. He even insisted on wearing his new backpack and packing a lunch like the big kids even though we would only be gone an hour. We've been talking about preschool ever since summer began and the speech therapist recommended him for a special preschool in the fall. However on the long awaited day we arrived for our assessment and the little stinker passed with flying colours, so he no longer qualified for the program. It became his first, last and only day at preschool. He wasn't completely aware what had happened. Fortunately we had a backup plan of an online preschool which we are now thoroughly enjoying. I'm a bit relieved not to have any more school driving and coordinating. However I am a bit sad with it since I had picked up a few darling school outfits for him and now since he doesn't leave the house he refuses to wear anything but his favourite lounging suit. He's a fickle one when it comes to his clothes this one!
Change is happening around here. It seems to be going smoothly so far. I have one working, one in high school, one in middle school, two that I teach 4th grade to at home with the help of an online charter program, an at home preschooler and the sweetest toddler pattering about the place.
Multi-tasking
I've been realising that I don't have enough time. Or that I'm not using my time wisely. Or that I've taken on too much... no that's not it. Regardless, I've been lamenting that I don't find time to exercise anymore. I was so good. Never missed a day... a good workout where I broke into a sweat and felt gross and fantastic afterwards! But somehow... some things crept in and took over the workout time.
Another thing I've realised that I don't seem to have time for, is the yard. I was all in a dither a few years ago to finally be buying a house that had a large yard. I was pumped at what a great fun place I was going to create. Fast forward three and half years... I have created.... a jungle. Unfortunately not one where exotic flora and fauna invite exotic birds and monkeys. Instead it is a jungle of tall grasses and weeds that entwine themselves around bicycles and swing sets and invite mosquito's and all manner of other insects. It's far too daunting to call it a Saturday project. It's more like an every Saturday of the summer and evening and well... it's a large yard and it's a large jungle. It's overwhelming.
So, in keeping with trying to do it all... I'm forcing myself to get out there and work in the jungle everyday. I was exercising for 45 minutes to an hour, so I should be able to give the yard that much time. And the added benefit is I get to cross off two things on my to do list with one task!
Now to find a way to type with my toes while I wash the dishes....

Key to the beach
For some, this image evokes thoughts of tranquility and joy. For some, the hope of a longed for vacation. For yet others, the beauty is breathtaking and awe inspiring.
But for me, I can think of two things.
1. That's a lot of sand! (and we all know how I feel about sand)
2. Somewhere in the vastness of that Hawaiian beach, is a set of expensive to replace rental car keys. Lost from the pocket of a pair of swimming trunks while out enjoying an afternoon of snorkeling.

The hardest working man...
Working in Hawaii... wink, wink.. nod, nod...

Sarah asked him to please take a photo of the state flower for her. He said that was the easiest request... they're everywhere! He wishes now that he had a waterproof camera so he could show us all the cool things he saw snorkeling also! Like the non-aggressive white tipped reef sharks, and the sea turtle that he 'didn't' touch! (since it's endangered!)
Hawaii 5-0
We're off to pick up Patrick from the airport... He's been in Hawaii for the last couple of weeks... for 'work'! The kids have enjoyed looking up the unusual sea life that he says he's encountered... including the white tipped reef sharks that he reassured us aren't human aggressive! We've learned about the state flower and that it used to be any colour hibiscus but now it is only the yellow!
It may not look good to be home, with all the kids, bare-foot and pregnant... actually I hate to be barefoot... while he is off frolicking on the beaches of Hawaii! (He keeps telling us that he works almost all the time) Don't feel bad for me though... Sand isn't my thing.. I grew up with the beach within walking distance my entire childhood... We went frequently... but it didn't grow on me. I like the idea of a relaxing beach visit... and I do still go to a beach so my children can have the experience, I just tend to stay on my towel. I have an enormous sand box?, circle?, area? in the backyard that my children love.... I just steer clear of it! I provided it, I don't have to play in it!
In fact I've discovered I have a theme song. It really sums things up quite nicely! Written by a great and amusing children's book author, Sandra Boynton.. (here's a snippit of it, sung reggae style)
I know I'm the odd man out... Everyone else things Hawaii would be great.. that the beaches are where it is at... but obviously I'm not the only one who feels this way regarding sand or they wouldn't have written that song!

You like Hawaii where the oceans roar.
You like Bermuda with the pink, pink shore.
You like Aruba where the palm trees sway.
You like Montego with its' beautiful bay.
You like the tropical sun and the tropical sea.
But hey, Mon, Alaska sounds good to me.
You like the tropical birds in their tropical flight.
I get the tropical bugs with their tropical bite
You like to be playing in the sun when it's hot.
I wish I could fine me some shade where it's not.
You tell me the islands are very very pretty,
but me, I find them... a little too gritty.
You spend the whole day by the turquoise sea;
at night time, the beach comes home with me.
I got the sand in my bed, and I think very soon
I'll be trying to sleep in my own sand dune.
When Sandman comes to put the sand in my eyes,
that little man is in for a big surprise.
I just want to go, I don't like the sand.
I want to see snow, or green green land.
When the next boat comes to Montego bay,
Jamaica farewell I'll be on my way!
(chorus)
I got the sand in my toes and the sand in my nose ,
The sand in my ears and the sand in my clothes.
I got the sand in my hair and the sand in my face,
I think I got the sand most, every place.
I know I'm the odd man out... Everyone else things Hawaii would be great.. that the beaches are where it is at... but obviously I'm not the only one who feels this way regarding sand or they wouldn't have written that song!
All work and no play...
I'd like to say that it makes Pat a dull boy... but I love the progress on the many projects. He's been in town for a whole 2 weeks now and Duncan asks each day. "Is Daddy going back to work again?". Completely confused child... Daddy still goes to work each day but also comes home each day. Since Duncan was born (and he's only 5), Patrick has been to Samoa, South Dakota, Ephraim UT, Elko NV, Page AZ, and Vernal UT. Even in town, he's working in Provo! Perhaps instead of buying our house 2 years ago we should have purchased an RV and traveled with Daddy... It's not as though we have to stay in town for school! LOL! Patrick loves the idea... then weekends wouldn't have the constant yard work and household tasks lists!
We're currently packing his suitcase again though... this time Hawaii.... guess our RV plan wouldn't work for this destination.... Chitty Chitty Bang Bang maybe? fly or float!... but I'm not into being bombed.... or suddenly ending up in Bulgaria... or maybe that would be a fun adventure... ok I digress.
I guess I shouldn't say ALL work... and 'no' play... we did take a few moments the other day when we went to tell the kids at the park that it was time to put the bikes away for the night and come home.....
The kids fixation on the Biggest Loser show this season brought all sorts of comments after that park moment!! Each night they continue to coax Daddy with,
So far he has smiled....

- "I'll go for a bike ride with you Daddy. It doesn't have to be too long... The trainers say even 15 minutes can make a difference."
- "Daddy, do you want me to sit on your feet while you do sit-ups? The resistance can help."
- "Daddy how about I dish up your dinner so you don't take too much. Portion control is important!"
- "How about some Wii Fit, it won't even seem like exercising, cause it's fun!"
- "Daddy, we're just trying to improve your quality of life." ...
So far he has smiled....
Scarbourough Faire

There isn't a more perfect quote to sum up a fair than the goose in Charlottes Web. "The fair is a veritable smörgåsbord"!!!
We lived the Faire life for three very full, hot, long days in Waxahachie Texas. Three days that felt like more.
While still tired from traveling to Texas and adjusting to the one hour time difference, the 15 degree temperature increase and the intense humidity, we were up bright and early on Saturday morning chasing animals into crates and loading them onto the trailer, being fit for costumes to help us blend in during the '16th century', and generally causing quite a hullabaloo as the ten of us prepared to have a full day at the Faire.

The first truck pulling the trailer of animals and gear left with the boys and they headed for the Faire grounds to unload and set up whilst us damsels... (16th century... getting in character) stopped at the bakery for the day old pastries, ice and drinks for the day ahead. We pulled into the peasants entrance... because of course as lowly farm workers we do qualify as peasants... we took Paige's advice and used the flushable privies before heading to work... but wait Paige let us in on a little secret!!... stop at the braiding tent on the way to the petting zoo for a hairdo that would last us all three days she said! The exquisite braids did more than just last three days... they kept our hair off our necks in the 100- degree weather and high humidity, they kept us looking remarkably tidy looking even though we knew by the end of each day we had a full layer of grime all over us. The braiding had one other perk... and that was that by the time four damsels had their long hair braided and headed to the petting zoo... the grueling work was done!
We weren't in the zoo all day though. We explored about 1/3 of the fairegrounds that day. We attended shows, looked in a few shops, and wandered around quite a bit. We were in the parade after lunch and that was fun... for most of us. Paige carried the smaller tortoise which was awkward to carry but had the desired effect of getting a lot of attention for the petting zoo... until that it it pooped on her... The parade route takes you all the way through and around the fairegrounds so I was glad to have a quick overview of the place... I just wish Duncan hadn't tuckered out half way along the route. I had to give him a piggy back ride to finish the parade and then walk all the way back to the zoo area. (I used short cuts whenever possible)(these were the strollers and wagons of the 16th century for hire at the faire)
Some of the kids favourite activities from the faire were the maze(Nicholas nickelby... oh... I can't remember the secret password!!), the human powered ferris wheel (the ladies had a crush on Duncan and he was happy to woo them with a bottle of cold water in exchange for yet another ride!), games of skill (renaissance carnival games... with real knives.. My worst nightmare!... Miles loved it!).

Cleaning up at the end of the day was almost an event in itself... and seemed to go very quickly... of course I was just a photographer. I was amazed at the way the kids could catch the animals and crate them so adeptly. But it must have been fun because sometimes as we waited for Carlos to arrive with the truck and trailer the kids would dance amongst the animals. On the last day of Faire we attended the end of the day ceremonies. A true challenge to describe. The bagpipes and the amazing costumes... the merriment of dancing we all got caught up in it... And finally the cannon boomed and it was all over .....
roll end credits!
