Gangnam Style

An idea... seven years ago....

some video footage with the nine... obliging children...

A trending song and dance sensation... long ago forgotten now.

Resulted in the following; day late and a dollar short segment of silliness.

We had intended to make it our Christmas video card for the year with words to tell of our exploits from the year.

However when it came time to edit the footage and put the music with new words together, I realized I didn't really know how.   So it sat on the back burner of my mind and in the recesses of the computer until now.  I know how to edit/trim video and add music... just not how to record new lyrics... and they weren't very good anyway!

The 'Un-Usual' Suspects

We may have discovered a.... not so Noble side.

The Crime occurred somewhere between midnight and 7:22 am.

The victim was last seen intact at midnight when covered with a tea towel, which was tucked in at both ends and a small piece of lego was placed on top.

Prime Suspect in the case.

Miles Noble.
Motive. (He likes brownies)
Opportunity.  (He was awake at 5am, while everyone else still slept)
Accused by a reliable source. (Emerson said he did it!)
Evidence.  While other suspects were questioned and booked he attempted to tamper with the evidence.
He couldn't keep a straight face and kept trying to distract the jury with ukelele playing and singing.

The Accomplice

Mackenzie Connolly
Motive.  She has professed that she would do anything for brownies.
Opportunity.  Limited... she sleeps like a log.
Evidence.  Aided and abetting the Prime Suspect during the booking and questioning process.

Innocent Bystander.  Wrong Place.  Wrong Time.

Perjured himself under oath. (Don't be fooled by his innocent act)

Emerson Noble
Motive.  He wanted one.
Opportunity.  He woke by 6am.
Accusation.  His quote, "Miles had one.  He cut it up and gave me some.  He's my buddy."

The Vigilante.  (Judge, jury, prosecutor... and also a suspect)

Sarah Noble
Motive.  She made the brownies.
Opportunity.  Often is up later than most, and wanders in sleep in the wee hours, or 'says' she's up for a drink of water.
Did not wake until after 8am.  Developed theories and a scenario that would indict everyone but herself. (suspicious)

The Crime Boss.  Attempted to bribe the jury after admitting to a similar crime.

Mother
Motive.  uhh... it was there. (no will power)
Opportunity.  only one who sleeps upstairs.  Awake at 7am, because the boys were too noisy in the kitchen and she couldn't sleep.. but she still didn't get out of bed.
Claims:  I'm the boss, applesauce.  Agreed with the Prime suspect that when she steals brownies she takes a little slice off the entire row so it doesn't look tampered with.  "Like I did last night at 2am when I finished my book.  BUT that's not the crime in question here!!  There is still a missing piece not being accounted for!  Everyone can have a stinking brownie... Can help themselves even... just own up to it... Just tell the truth!"

The Line up of un-usual suspects.

Although the Prime Suspect admitted to how he would have committed the crime IF it had been him, he maintained his claim of innocence even while struggling to maintain a straight face.  The jury struggled to believe him with all the mounting evidence.
He was accused with a supposed witness.
He attempted to take another piece with his accomplice during the booking.
He couldn't keep a straight face during questioning... booking... or most anytime.
He admitted to past offences.
He had the easiest opportunity and ability to carry out the crime and return the towel to it's position without notice.

Convicted but released on an insanity plea!

Whittaker Noble
Motive.  He wanted one.
Opportunity.  He was also awake before 7am.
Claims.  After all the questioning and booking and his claims of "I didn't steal any brownies this morning.  I promise!"  He finally whispered,  "I might have taken one when I blinked and didn't see myself do it, when it was still nighttime.  Maybe."

He comes by those chocolate eyes dishonestly I guess.

Once the verdict was in, after almost an hour of interrogation and posturing, we all had brownies for breakfast.  It wasn't a lesson in healthy eating habits or the importance of not snitching after all.  It was about the value of our integrity.

It's worth more than a brownie.

Love multiplied

Love seats are intended for two.

Says who?

Our Friday night's have become an all ages party station.  Groups of eighteen between ages 3 and 16 are not uncommon.  This particular evening was what we could term.... A quiet night at home.  While there was plenty of seating available for a change....

What would be the fun in that?

Dreaming of Summer Bliss

The first day of Spring arrived, blue skies, tulips emerging, a backyard hot dog roast and an afternoon outside resulted in some sunburned arms and happy people.

The next day an inch of snow covered the ground.

Easter Sunday was the end of a four day spring break of delightful weather and relaxation.
Monday morning brought a drastic drop in temperature and .... more dreaded snow.

Soooo.. to combat.
We remember summer days of bliss and contentment.

An impromptu game of baseball at the ranch.

This is the all new workout regime that is making headlines!!
The Can Crusher.
A fabulous upper body workout.
It can be done solo or with your exercise partner.

Best of all... water play.
(pants apparently optional)

Making new friends

All Hallow's Eve

Some costumes were thought of, planned out, and prepared well in advance.

Some were requested an hour before.  They had to choose from previously available.
Due to neighbours requests, the boys decided to dress up and trick or treat after all.  They had planned to stay home in boring clothes.

For  some choosing just one costume was out of the question.
Option #1:  Spanish Bandit Monk Pirate Dalmation Dr. Spider
Option #2: Super Pumpkin Chicken Dog

Practicing is always encouraged.  Not that receiving candy is difficult, but the new phrase 'Trick or Treat' and remembering to say Thank you, knocking (not just opening stranger's doors) are all important skills to master before you embark on All Hallow's Eve.
Whittaker took it upon himself to train Emerson.  Whittaker had been given the all clear for the first day in 6 weeks to go outside on Halloween but he opted to hand out at the door instead, so he claimed he would practice that part.  In fact after practicing a few times Whittaker inquired of the older siblings who was planning to take Emerson out for the real thing.  He didn't think he was ready to go unaccompanied.  Oddly, he didn't ask me.

I think practicing paid off.

Emerson certainly didn't complain about practicing.

After all the preparation and a final costume change we were ready to embark on the adventure.
Option#3: Super monster puppy pirate... in tap shoes.

At the last minute, Whittaker decided he would like to go.  He said he only needed a minute to become a ninja.  Apparently it came with skills.

As soon as a ninja was going, the Super monster puppy pirate picked up a few ninja moves as well... in tap shoes.

All that work for four houses.
We practiced more times than that.
Emerson was thrilled after only one house.
Whittaker encouraged three more and then he announced that it had been fun but it was time to return home.  He still wanted to do the handing out at the door after all.

The simplicity of not planning to go and going at the last minute for only a few minutes has definite benefits.  Less stress beforehand, less complaining about cold, sore and tired feet and less candy also.

Reinventing the Wheel (barrow that is)

There is just something exhilarating about a homemade go cart style riding machine.  They may have scooters, bikes, skates and rip sticks but making something with tossed out wheels, some rope and an old wheelbarrow created days of entertainment.

Especially when they talked me into trying it out.

I Double Dog Dare You!!

Just found this post from over a year ago...   Sad thing is... it could just have easily been from yesterday.

Ahhh, the return of summertime and long lazy days...

Reality.. the return of full time extra kids, long exhausting days that fly by before you blink, incessant squabbles over anything, nothing and everything and fantastic moments from the kids that make your sides ache from so much laughter.

The most recent one came in the form of a 'double dog dare!'

It came to our attention on Sunday evening.  The kids had a case of the cooped up all day sillies and we decided to send them outside to run around until bedtime.  As Caleb came up to be the babysitter outside and monitor the racing games, he mentioned that it was good timing since we wouldn't have liked what was going on downstairs.  "I'm not sure exactly what was going on, but the little boys were all getting or giving wedgies."  he said as he headed outside.

Grandma and I, who were sitting at the table as always spending every possible moment pouring over genealogical archives, turned with wide eyes and dropped jaws.

Ummmm...

We summoned inside the first victim.

Duncan's story.
Yes I gave Derek a wedgie but only cause Cooper double dog dared me to.

Cooper's story.
I don't know why Duncan gave me a wedgie.  Oh... Ok.. I told him to give me a wedgie.

Derek's story.
We all gave wedgies.  Can I go now?

I'm not sure if getting to the bottom of things is always necessary.

*Sigh* Raising boys!

65 years of FUN

Summertime heat forces hordes of children indoors to find amusements.... I've offered chores but receive blank stares and eye rolling...

While some activities entertain for a while, some have stood the test of time.  Grandma's hockey game and the rolling moon have lived on the table for over a week and have been in almost constant play.  Young and old alike took on challengers.

Pros
-works when the power is out
-No batteries to charge
-Amuses players and observers
-Never seems to get old even though there is only one level of play
-No screen to glaze over the eyes

Cons
-small ball is often missing
-Only a two player game... often a dozen people watching
-Increases smack talking
-Fingers get sore after a while (hours)
-Disputes over goal keeping abound
-Disputes over one side being better than another

Who's kidding.... I had to stretch to make them cons.

Spring Conference Easter Break

When Spring Break is the same long weekend as Easter and the same long weekend as General Conference.... this is what happens.

Our Easter eggs get pictures of Prophets and apostles. (thanks pinterest) The candy eating is spread out over two full days, since they can't be opened until that person speaks.

The following statements may have been made over the two days.
-Can I eat Holland yet?
-Is this guy an egg?
-Did you eat Oaks yet?
-What candy did Packer give you?
-What should I do with Ballard?  He didn't talk.
-I don't think it's this guy, he's wearing a blue tie and the guy on my egg is wearing a black tie.
-He got old after they took his picture.
-They talked so long my chocolate melted.

I had to come up with an idea for the cub scouts to make for mother's day next month.  I found this idea of an 'I love it when...' message board.

We've had a lot of messages shared over the last few days...
these were the nicest.

Some were, I love it when...
- you come when you are called.
- you do what you say.
- you help chop onions.
- you don't roll your eyes.
- when you get up the first time you're called.
- you use the potty.
- it's bedtime.
- Sarah bakes.

Perhaps we need to leave this one for a while.

Some spent the weekend lounging.... like always!

Human Trafficking

Human  Bridge... a twisted toddler trust exercise... or Mum left the room while we were 'building a fort' to fetch a larger blanket...   Whatever I title it I can not get past that I stood and filmed it instead of stopping it instantly.

Indoor Recess

When there's energy to burn and cold weather outside sometimes the creativity brings the outdoor play inside.  And at times a blind eye by Mummy is needed...  The entire upstairs became the race course of the week!  It made me think of going to Tom Thumb when I was growing up.  Little driving course.

Pedestrians needed to beware for their toes!

Surprisingly there were very  few accidents and they were all minor.

Tricks for the Halloween bucket!

The countdown to Halloween.  Whittaker was definitely the most excited for the holiday this year.  As we turned the page of the calendar over to October he excitedly informed us that he was going trick or treating.  After being asked almost every morning, "Is it trick or treating this day"???  I made a countdown.  On the calendar were stickers and stamps for the days that we had a holiday activity planned.

We had the church chili cook off!   Complete with costumes.  (I think I like that they have costumes since I can get the costume prep over with before the hecticness of Halloween night!)

Miles -Jack Frost
Duncan - Patrick?/ welder
Nova -Morton salt girl
Sarah - Mime
Whittaker - Super Penguin
Emerson - Carl from the movie Up.

The inevitable dry run costume outing results were.... Emerson hates costumes.  Even simple ones that include balloons... He hated his cane, hat and glasses.  Whittaker learned that he couldn't walk too well with penguin feet and of course after being a Super Penguin for 2 weeks day and sometimes night, by Halloween he'd moved on.  Duncan, realized that it would be difficult to see on Halloween in a welding helmet and a bit chilly for simply a t-shirt (Plus I'm sure people might confuse him with daddy).  Miles only request was that his hair be more white.  Sarah learned that the white makeup didn't dry if it was put on too thick.  I learned that most people don't know that it's the 100th anniversary of the Morton Salt girl.

Sarah tried other options, and thought about this one too long and it was gone when we returned.

Miles tried a red nose on for size but stuck with Jack Frost.

We decorated the house!

We raked the neighbourhood's leaves and jumped in giant leaf piles!  We also rode in the wheel barrel a lot.  Until the wheel broke, then Miles began tinkering and coming up with ways to make the bucket part into a wicked sled for this winter.

We carved pumpkins!

Emerson took the task of scraping out the pumpkin very seriously.

Once Emerson saw what was to become of the scraped out pumpkins it was even more exciting!!

We (some of us!) even attended a Haunted House!   For some it was whatever.  For others it was their first, last and only, thank you very much!

Miles claims that he was a human shield used by Sarah for more than half the evening.  Patrick was likely as intimidating as any 'monster' they encountered.  Kenzie apparently loves the thrills.  Channa would not go inside and waited at a coffee shop across the street.  I stayed perfectly content, AT HOME!

We had designated Halloween movie nights!  Curious George Boo, The Cat from Outer Space, Pooh's Heffalump Halloween and of course, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!.

Most movie nights went as planned but I had the wrong date written down for the Charlie Brown on TV, so we had a bit of angst over having to be flexible.  Fortunately I was a day early and not a day late!!!

Emerson may be Linus for Halloween.  He certainly acts the part well.

We ate pumpkin!
We made pumpkin pancakes and squash soup (pumpkin family!), and of course some fabulous Oatmeal Pumpkin Chocolate chip cookies were devoured!

We went to a Halloween carnival with a corn maze!

Hay rides, a giant corn maze, an enormous rocking chair for 6, an informative, musical, puppet, chicken show, a huge spider web, plenty of photo spots, and fun duck races!

We went to see the new IMAX, Panda's!

Really enjoyed the movie.  So sweet, sad and enlightening.  I even found myself thinking.... I wonder if we could grow enough bamboo in the backyard to get a panda.... Good thing they mentioned that they can maul a person.  Whittaker wore his Panda costume to the theater and has decided to be a Panda for Halloween now.  And has been a panda for many other daily activities since.

We listened to Halloween music and read some Halloween stories!

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones...
One eyed, one horned, flying, purple people eater...
The monster mash...
Pumpkin Head Harvey...

We had a Halloween party at scouts!

We played ghostly bowling, match the monsters, make creepy eyeballs out of white donuts and lifesavers, keep the orange balloon in the air, and don't eat pete!  A simple fun party with WAY too many snacks and goodies for our small group of scouts.

We made it to Halloween at last!!

Time for ....

OH NO!!!

We need a bucket.... but not for candy.

Trick or Treating was out for the evening for one sad little panda.  The illness came on very suddenly just as he was dressed and ready to head out the door.

So, from the beginning of the month to the end of the month a lot can change.

Sarah - stayed home to be a court jester nurse to the sick panda, and to hand out goodies at the door.
Duncan - decided not to be daddy, instead he went as a chicken farmer... or as we teased, himself!
Emerson - who had been sick for 2 days was suddenly excited to dress as a turtle and go door to door saying, "Just a treat" and then extremely loud and persistently loud saying, "Thank you!" until they said you're welcome.  He also spent much of the evening saying, "Wait, boys.", and "Help with stairs, boys." and "Just a treat now boys."
Miles - His hair was longer and this time we used acrylic paint, since when we returned home we would be having a much needed haircut!
Whittaker - Suddenly feeling ill, went to sleep, waking only to vomit and return to sleep.
Nova - Well, after the excitement leading up to the evening, I went as myself.

Patrick - arrived home minutes before we completed our trick or treating for the evening.  He was dressed as .... a tired out of town welder.

Boo Hoo... Halloween is over for another year.
