Canoedling

We learned that the church had a bunch of canoes that were available to check out.  So... we did.  The day for canoeing approached.  The weather was cooperative.  The lake wasn't crowded.  The road leading to the beach area... was less than pleasant... potholes and boulders and narrow turns... we were pleased to arrive at the beach!

The masked canoers... a menacing looking crew.  So much so, that the few people on the beach left after we arrived.  (We did come during the early evening while most others spend the day at the beach and tend to leave around evening.)

Thankfully, everyone left, so we unmasked and enjoyed a few hours of leisure time at the lake.

We split up into logical groups.  Duncan and Derek manned their canoe.  Channa, Jim and Whittaker took the next, Patrick Emerson and I in the last.

We all had our own unique adventures. Duncan and Derek were overly adventurous.  They saw the narrow area at the FAR side of the lake that led to another section of secluded lake.  They immediately and quickly began paddling that way.  Patrick and I spent a little time teaching Emerson to paddle in sync with my paddle.  Once we realized that Duncan and Derek were planning to cross the entire lake, we paddled like mad to catch up to them and change their plans..  Instead we convinced them to paddle around the lake near the shore.  For a first canoeing we didn't want to get to the middle of the lake and find ourselves exhausted and having to paddle against the wind to return.  The wind once we left the seclusion of the little bay was difficult to paddle against.

We went around the first point and found ourselves in another bay.  Duncan and Derek discovered a rock sticking out of the water (mini island?) and paddled over to check it out.  Emerson announced that he needed to potty.  We spotted an outhouse in the campgrounds near the shore so we paddled to shore.  Patrick discovered that our boat had a small leak.  Thankfully he out weighed Emerson and I so the water stayed in his end.

We began to wonder what had become of the third canoe.  We thought they would have followed us.  However as they paddled out of the gentle bay, they also discovered the strong winds.  It blew the hat right off of Jim's head.  Whittaker cried out.  "That's Duncan's favourite hat!"  Their adventure included the rescue of the hat before it sunk to the bottom of the lake.  Jim said that had it continued to sink despite their efforts to get it with the paddles he had been willing to jump overboard and go after it!  (Just a hat... and not necessarily a favourite just because Whittaker deemed it so!) They paddled about for a bit and then returned to shore.  Jim snoozed in the grass and Whittaker explored the water's edge until we all returned

After our potty break we returned to the beach (against the wind).  Grateful we hadn't adventured much further we beached the canoes.  The boys joined Whittaker in some swimming and exploring.

Little boys tried to keep up with big boys as they explored the rock formations and the pools of water.

After 'relaxing', the big boys had enough energy to venture out again.  This time they had a plan.  Duncan boasted that he knew how to right a capsized canoe.  We suggested not capsizing.  Instead they decided to practice climbing back into the canoe from in the water.

They practiced a few times near the shore then headed out a bit deeper to try it again.

Meanwhile, the little boys convinced Channa to explore with them.  Apparently the rock formation created a small shallow pool of water they were referring to as the 'hot tub'.

Channa and I were keeping an eye on the big adventure boys

Soon we were all captivated by the adventure boys.  They had paddled out deeper and jumped in.  Duncan then climbed back in.  The wind we referred to earlier was still blowing and they were being blown further and further away. So Derek, now in the water was getting further and further from the canoe.  Duncan paddled closer and Derek once again held on.  The attempts to climb in were exhausting for us on the shore to watch... and must have been more so for Derek.  Duncan hopped out again to try to hold the canoe steadier for him.  This went on for another 15 minutes.  Duncan hopping in and out and trying different options... and then... SUCCESS.  Both boys were in the canoe.

The canoe that was now much further out.  They had to paddle back against the wind.
Adventure boys slept well that night.

A canoe day at the lake was delightful.  We will certainly go again.  We will also find a better road.

Artistic Endeavors

We don't lack for activities to eat up our hours in the days.  Covid or not we are able to keep busy.
One afternoon, with snowflakes quietly falling outside and we had no where to be after completing our to-do list for the day, the boys were looking for an activity to do.  I suggested they pulled out their paints since they hadn't done it in a while.  They weren't sure it sounded fun... just at home by themselves. I said what if it was an art class?  With a real teacher?  I was flying by the seat of my pants but Duncan was game and the boys follow his lead.  All three boys had been taking an art class this winter and really enjoyed it.

Each week had a different focus.  The first few weeks taught about lines (straight, contoured, zigzags...), another week about colour and another about tone.  The classes also taught them about new art mediums.

This was from a class using scraps of fabric to create a collage.

This was from a class of collages using 3d objects.

This was a class with broken crayons, silhouettes and a blow dryer.

Some were a nature painting based off a photograph.

We used up every inch of wall space in their bedroom to hang art.
Some took over the bookshelves.

Duncan even took a few art classes.. His were at the retirement center.  Technically he was there to assist the elderly, but he also participated.  He has done collages, ceramics and edible art.

So Virtual Art Class became a thing.
We cued up Bob Ross on the laptop and set up the paints.

They followed his instructions well and paused a lot.  Bob can paint very quickly.

After almost two hours, they were pleased with their 'stormy seas' renditions.

We decided we wanted to do another Bob Ross and this time we let others know... since it was virtual, anyone, anywhere could paint.

Now Painting on Thursday afternoons is a thing!
I even painted along with the boys this time.. however I don't find Bob Ross to be relaxing for the inexperienced painter.
Karlsson's joined us for our inaugural group class.  Jill watched and enjoyed our angst!

We did a few Bob Ross classes.

Sarah joined us for the next one and it was helpful when we paused Bob to ask Sarah... 'what did he tell us to do?  Okay.. how?'
Some of us struggled to get everything Bob said into our paintings... especially the boat... it was an the end of hours of painting and we just didn't have a sweet carefree boat left in us... well except Sarah... her painting looked better than Bob's!

Then Sarah became the teacher and we tried watercolours.
Watercolours with Sarah was more relaxing.
I envision painting as a relaxing hobby.  I don't consider it a hobby of mine yet... I prefer house painting still, but I have picked up some knowledge of the craft and I'm very impressed with all the artistic talent we've been seeing in each other.

Emerson sees instructions as very lose guidelines and always amazes with his creations.
He's also typically finished first.

Whittaker stays very focused and listens intently to the instructions.
He is enamoured by cousin Ava and created an entire watercolour book to honour her.
  • Ava swimming in a pool.
  • Ava likes to ride scooters.
  • Ava
  • Ava is a vegetarian.
  • Ava LOVES kitty cats.
  • Ava plays ClubPenguin with me.
  • Ava has the BEST Balderdash clues.
  • Ava is a good racer at Mariokart and races with us sometimes.

Duncan dutifully painted his three Bob Ross paintings and has either been busy during art class or has opted to just sketch something instead.

I didn't have any idea what I would be capable of when I began.  Bob Ross, as I said was not relaxing but it was fun, after it was over.  I tried a few different types of paint.. first oils, then acrylics and watercolour together and just watercolour.  I ought to give them each another try since once isn't really enough to say I enjoyed or disliked it, but class has moved on to watercolours now and that has been more enjoyable.  Except when I use too much water, or tear my page.. or use too much red...

We painted a dock scene with Bob Ross and were completely overwhelmed when he added the boat toward the end of the painting.  Sarah tried to help us get past our fear of boat painting.
I think Eden and I agree, we'd rather paint an actual boat than a painting with another boat in it.  Who knew such a simple thing as a boat would be so daunting.

We took a break one week from regular painting and had a rock painting day.

Rock painting lasted late into the evening.  The boys really got into it and went out looking for more rocks.  They easily painted a dozen rocks.
I painted a few myself.  Anything goes it seems, on a rock!

And then.... everyone was busy one week.  Whittaker and Emerson had a private class with watercolour through a straw technique.  Emerson had finished his entire painting of a 'parkor' course before the first instructions were given and he left.

Whittaker focused and committed, stayed to finish his straw watercolour.
'Apple Orchard on a Sunny Day'

Finally, chicken painting day arrived.  I had been campaigning for chicken painting day.  I thought it would be delightful.  I wasn't paying attention and missed some key instructions at the beginning.  I ended up with a fire engine red chicken.. It took a lot of work to blend other colours into my FDWY chicken. (Fire Department Wyoming Chicken) I may have led the boys down the red row also.

even John sent in a chicken art submission!
After posting our completed art projects John sent us this funky dancing chicken masterpiece.  Art is ageless, subjective and regardless of the instructions.. the outcomes are all unique to the painter.  Loving art classes... most of the time.

Caleb also sent in an Art Class entry....

His entry lacks colour, style and he didn't really listen to Bob Ross... happy little accidents can become a cloud or a tree... not just dirty pants and boots.

Next week Miss Ava is teaching class.  I wonder if it will have anything to do with kitties??

Little eyes are watching

They look up to you, and admire your abilities.. and want to dress just like you.

They come to you to help them out.

You set good examples of manners and take good care of them.

You don't look down on them, you include them in playtimes.

You show them how to have fun and get right in there with them.

You show that you are willing to stop in the middle of your fun to help others out.
Even a long walk on HOT sand to take them potty.

They've learned by watching and experiencing from you and they're starting to be the big guy in some situations now and they are caring and patient because someone was to them.

They're watching you get together and have good clean fun without rudeness.  They learned that who won didn't matter as much as having a friendly fun time together.

They're learning that you carry people when they need help.

Sometimes they're literally watching you... and seeing that staying with a tough project pays off in the end.

They're learning skills and safety and appreciate having a chance to be just like you.

They're learning that just because it's work it doesn't have to be dull!

They're watching and learning how to be just like you.

Thanks for giving them so many good examples.

When 21 gather

Duncan mowed a baseball diamond in the hopes of a game.  He couldn't have predicted such a hilarious kickball game.  The dog chased the ball, the terrain was uneven and uphill on the last two bases, and there was so much laughing!!

Giant Jenga came tumbling down.  Grandma only jumped out of her skin... a lot.  but laughed with each tumble.  Techniques were discussed and strategies were definitely in play.

Speaking of strategy!  Giant Chess... Strategy for this game was supervised and suggested, but mostly it was just for fun!

Croquet anyone?  A full on game never got in to full 'swing', but there were multiple attempts at a few rounds.  Typically at the urging from a younger fellow.

Emerson's Birthday Party!
Saturday was all about fun and what better way to have fun than to have a birthday for a SEVEN year old!  It was only 3 days early and he was soo excited.  He requested a pumpkin cake.  We also made a lemon cake for feeding the masses.  Lighting the candles outside didn't work too well but finally success and singing and cake all around!

BOAT RACING
see next post!

Archery at sunset across the gorge.

Meals
the photographer was also the cook... just trust me... there was food... lots of FOOD

they lined up to eat it!

Games were played would be an understatement!  There was almost always a game going somewhere.

Shhhh,  naptime.

Hugs

Some hugs were in the background, but they were captured all the same!
