Leonardo da Vinci

For our field trip yesterday we went to the Woodbury Art Museum in Orem. The Da Vinci exhibit is there until Oct. 4th. We've been learning about old "Leo" in our studies of the Italian renaissance period artists.

Sarah and Miles have been full of little facts about him. Miles has mostly been impressed by his inventions. Caleb found the trivia more interesting... learning that some of his artistic masterpieces wouldn't fit into the frames made for them so they were trimmed until they fit.

I've been fascinated at his attempts... not so much his accomplishments, although they are more than impressive. I find that he attempted anything he felt inspired to.... and many times he didn't accomplish any 'thing'... but learned from the attempt nonetheless. And the lack of discouragement is obvious as we've pored over some of his drawings and idea books.

There was a movie at the exhibit that talked about his life and it mentioned that he often started new things or drew plans for things which he never completed. Sometimes the plan was enough.. other times something more interesting to attempt just presented itself and he abandoned his existing project.

After being to the exhibit Miles informed us that Da Vinci wasn't that smart. In fact he said "I'm smarter than Da Vinci. I saw that water invention he made but he just made the water go up the tube and then come right back down into the same place through a little hose. It should go somewhere else or that invention isn't really all that good!" (The fact that is was a replica in a museum and they were just recirculating the water so it wouldn't be all over the floor hadn't occured to him... I guess he wanted it to have a greater purpose!) {See top center photo.}

All in all it was a decent little field trip for some hands on da Vinci. There really wasn't anything new for us to learn about him but it was cool to try out some of the exhibits.

Sarah's favourite was the "night clock"... A candle next to a board with notches in it telling how much time had passed since he had lit the candle. He would light it when he went to bed to know if he'd had enough sleep when he awoke in the middle of the night. She also enjoyed seeing some of his artwork even though they were 'just copies!'
(Note the bottom left photo is Sarah and Miles doing their best Mona Lisa impressions)

Miles was of course fascinated by all the different inventions that had to do with aiding in the war of the time. Precursors to our modern day tanks, and helicopters.

Caleb loved the room of eight mirrors used to see something from all angles without having to handle it. Also it was created for some royalty so they could see all angles of themselves when dressing.

Some of our favourite Leonardo Da Vinci quotes are:
  • Blinding ignorance does mislead us. O! Wretched mortals, open your eyes!
  • Common Sense is that which judges the things given to it by other senses.
  • He who is fixed to a star does not change his mind.
  • I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.
  • I have wasted my hours.
  • Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation... even so does inaction sap the vigour of the mind.
  • Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else.
  • Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
  • You can have no dominion greater or less than that over yourself.
  • As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well spent brings happy death.
  • Art is never finished, only abandoned.

Uncle Jim's fun house

So what should you do when as luck would have it errands went quickly and you arrive an hour early to pick up your Uncle Jim to go on a field trip with you?

Why have a round of croquet of course!

And for those who aren't too sure what the rules are?

Why, make up your own rules of course! They don't call it Uncle Jim's fun house for nothing!

Chicken Dance

When I went out to do the photo shoot with the chickens, I had some assistants who wanted to help me. After repeatedly asking them not to chase the chickens and to stay out of the shot I let them act naturally... and what do they do?....

The Ladies winter home

The lucky rooster is indeed a hen after all.. so SHE has been dubbed Lady Cluck. Although she has been through more than any of the other hens and has had more adventures in her short life and has lived to tell of them, she is unfortunately at the bottom of the pecking order... disliked by the other more plump and pampered hens. She was quarantined for a short time in order for her wounds to heal and hasn't ever truly been accepted back into the flock. Since they were living in tight quarters at the time we left 'Lady Cluck' in her own quarters until 'Winter Quarters' could be secured for all of them. This years apple harvest was a bit of a bust due to the odd weather patterns of the spring so the hens were given a season's reprieve. (As was Patrick in constructing a safe pen for them to live in throughout the summer months.)

But winter will approach before we know it so a winter quarters was discussed. Patrick set to work with Caleb and they constructed a hen house. I was thinking temporary housing, small but adequate for winter security. I suggested close to the house for ease of feeding throughout the winter. Patrick was thinking one house that can be used all year so another won't need to be constructed EVER AGAIN!, and ease of cleaning it out was paramount! I had a meeting to attend the evening they started construction so was rather surprised to return and see their progress on the Tajmahal of chicken coops! I chided that it was overkill and gave a few suggestions in design for ease of egg collection and then I think I came into blog or something!

The construction took a week. Each evening until dark and most of Saturday was spent perfecting the details of the ladies new home! Unfortunately it wasn't built in place and we had to employ some newly studied grade two physics principals to move the coop into place. We created a wheel and it moved it(with Patrick the OX), quite effortlessly! Now for the hens. It took a little coaxing to get them to check it out but they definitely understand that this is a grand place. They've never had it so good! They had a grand coop and a little securely fenced in area all of their own. What more could a hen want? Lady Cluck was reintroduced to the flock at this time since there was so much more space they could take their time getting reacquainted.

Patrick seems to think he knows all about chickens since he had some growing up on a Ranch. I had chickens growing up also. I had pointed out a few flaws in the design during construction but had been reprimanded with "I know a thing or two about chickens!". I decided that the best way to win was to be right and not to bother with the argument in between. I kept quiet until Saturday. One problem I noticed was how high the nesting boxes were from the ground. I suggested a ramp with some boards every so often for grip. I also pushed for lots of perches for them to sleep on at about 1' from the ground. Patrick insisted that the hens could manage to fly the 2 1/2 feet up into their nesting boxes and that perches needed to be at varying heights due to the pecking order! I was also concerned about the actual nesting boxes being a bit cramped for my egg laying hens. (They haven't started laying yet, but it could be any day now... it's like a due date I guess!... We are so looking forward to that first egg!) Each time I discussed chicken issues with my dad, he agreed with Patrick. Time will tell I guess.

I wanted hens that were kind to each other, not requiring pecking order perches but equality... and ease for them in their egg laying state to get to their nesting areas... I'm sure I didn't want to JUMP into my hospital bed when I was ready to deliver! (granted I wasn't doing it daily... but that just said to me how much more they needed the extra kindness) I really felt I could empathize with the chickens far better than Patrick! Patrick acquiesced after a while and built a ramp... I think he knew I wouldn't be quiet about it until he did! Then he built a perch... but not how I described it to him.... He was creating pecking order chaos! Well it's been a week... my ramp is used regularly... and not one of the hens has attempted his perch! Lady Cluck still isn't accepted into the flock but she isn't being chased and pecked at nearly as voraciously anymore! She is even beginning to plump up a little herself! The coop is located just outside one side of Caleb's bedroom windows so we'll be able to feed and water in the winter without having to go out into the cold.

Caleb no longer sleeps alone! Besides the odd cat sometimes climbing up into his bed with him, there are now 9 hens clamoring for a spot up against the window, sometimes on top of each other. Lady Cluck, since she isn't as accepted, sleeps alone at the top of the ramp that I designed... I guess as far as pecking order goes.. She sleeps higher than any of the others and is the only one so far that we've given a name to ... and a titled name at that... So I guess pecking order is inevitable... just not quite as Patrick in his all knowing chicken ways assumed it to be!

(So I need to learn a little more about photography so that I can capture the hens sleeping up against a filthy window at night without getting my reflection in the photo or Caleb's bed reflected... hmmm... maybe I should just clean the window!)

Rush Hour Noble Style -- part three

What next?
The afternoon was equally as crazy with many officers, the principal and all of the neighbourhood out to discuss the issues. Nothing resolved on the street corners but lots of ideas and suggestions of things to try.

We went to the city council the next night. The city council only allows for each person to speak for 3 minutes. Some of the frustrated parents also spoke although they only had complaints and we proposed some solutions. When the time cut off and we hadn't quite finished our speech the Mayor requested that we call his office in the morning and schedule with his secretary. He wished to discuss this matter further with us.

When we called the next morning, she said that he would be available to meet with us in half an hour... could we be there? Uhhhhh... sure! So we went to see the Mayor! We presented the problem to him. We showed the maps of the school boundaries, the map of the neighbourhood, the map of traffic flow concerns. We discussed our main concerns and our proposed solutions. He was patient and kind and listened to us. We arranged to have a meeting with all the needed individuals to pinpoint some feasible solutions. The meeting was scheduled for 2 weeks away.

Until then, we assisted children crossing the roads and we observed the traffic flow and pondered any further solutions. The city conducted some traffic studies of their own. The school opted to wait until the outcome of the meeting to do anything further.

The day of the meeting arrived all too quickly. Many of the neighbours were in attendance. The Mayor, the traffic engineers, the code enforcement officers, the DARE liason officer, the Sherriff, the crossing guard coordinator, the city council member over the area, the PTA, the Principal of the school were all there. The meeting lasted a little over two hours! A lot of discussion... some a little heated and others fairly productive! It was established that all our concerns were valid and needed to be addressed. The city committed to do any and all of the proposed solutions as funding would permit. The school apologized for not having informed the School Board that there was an issue and promised to fill them in so we could find out what the schools intentions were. The police agreed to continue weekly spot surveillance of illegal parking and traffic violations in an educational capacity. The crossing guard coordinator helped us know what things we needed to do in order to qualify for a crossing guard. The Mayor made it clear he wanted to see some steps taken ASAP to resolve this issue. The PTA argued that they had tried to help before... it hadn't worked and they didn't have any other options and the Principal backed them up. We pointed out many things that we'd like to see that would require the support and assistance of the school. We were only met with arguments.

While we went away from the meeting feeling as though the city was on our side and we would see something soon... just what we didn't know. We also left very frustrated with the school. Without their support, even the efforts of the city could be for nothing.

Doing my civic duty is exhausting work... and keeps my phone ringing. I finally turned off the ringer and went to bed that night.

Sticky Hands

What Happens when Mummy leaves for the evening for a General Women's Broadcast and light dinner....

So.. I have never actually cared for sticky hands, feet, bugs... anything sticky... especially when the aim is to swing it around and throw it at things to see it stick! I am in the minority on this though. Audrey apparently loves them and since Valerie didn't show an aversion to the awful things... I would collect ones that my children would get from dentists offices, birthday party favors and any other annoying place that would give out sticky hands and mail them on to Audrey.

But these were extra LARGE sticky hands from Duncan's birthday party the day before and apparently irresistible to those I left at home.... So this is what I came home all inspired and rejuvenated to see.

Birthday requests

Duncan had two requests for his birthday.
  1. I would like to have pancakes with strawberries on them.
  2. I would like to go to Kay and Rogers to play games.
The pancakes I could take care of myself. The Kay and Rogers... I made a quick phone call. We haven't seen Kay and Roger since early this spring. I know Kay's schedule changes at least once and usually twice a year so I wasn't sure when or if she would be available. Luck would have it Friday was her day off and her niece and nephew would be spending the day with them also. They would love to have us over for the afternoon! Wish granted!

We used to play games with Kay and Roger at our old house once a week. Then we moved and two months later so did they. We've seen them about every 6 months or so since... not as regular as we used to be but the children still have fond memories of game days with Kay and Roger.

I brought what we needed for pancakes with strawberries and figured we would play some games like we always did... But Kay, as always, spoiled my kids!

We arrived to find them in the driveway ready to play a pin the tail on the 'catonkey?', the 'donkat?'... the picture started out as a donkey but looked more like a cat... but the rules were the same.
Then we played an airplane throwing contest, and a marble dropping game. Each winner received a token, (a mint) that after the games were traded in for prizes. The prizes were essentially the next activity... I'm glad they were outside and at their house!... Sticky hands, flarp (noise making putty).. Duncan said "Fart makers", balloon screamers, and some foam airplanes. Almost another hour of fun making horrible flarping and screaming noises! The balloons were really wild... and amazingly enough.. not one went on the roof, although many came close!

We headed inside to make dinner.. breakfast.. dinner... breakfast for dinner! The kids all played with Roger and his computer and Kay and I cooked. Daddy arrived just in time to flip the pancakes and we all enjoyed our meal.
Duncan was appreciative of his great party and even endured the weird gifts! What five year old is excited about new winter boots and a new bike helmet for his birthday? Duncan was ecstatic and insisted on trying them on right away!... I love how easy to please he is! He got other more exciting gizmos (paddle ball, game of trouble, Bible card game and a new watch) from his siblings and Kay and Roger gave him a large bouncy ball and the game of battleship.

The evening wasn't complete until we went outside and had a silly string fight! I really should loosen up. The kids had a great time with all these things that Mummy never allows. We finished off the evening with a great game of Alphabet Bingo and we headed home... kids asleep before we hit the main road!

The Importance of Five

Image:Evolution5glyph.png The evolution of our modern glyph for five cannot be neatly traced back to the Brahmin Indians quite the same way it can for 1 to 4. Later on the Kushana and Gupta Indians had among themselves several different glyphs which bear no resemblance to the modern glyph. The Nagari and Punjabi took these glyphs and all came up with glyphs that look like a lowercase "h" rotated 180°. The Ghubar Arabs transformed the glyph in several different ways, coming up with glyphs that look more like 4s or 3s than 5s. It was from those characters that the Europeans finally came up with the modern 5, though from purely graphical evidence, it would be much easier to conclude that our modern 5 came from the Khmer. The Khmer glyph develops from the Kushana/Ândhra/Gupta numeral, its shape looking like a modern day version with an extended swirled 'tail' "The Universal History of Numbers"

Breakfast time!

We had fun traveling to the Ranch with Channa and crew. We had a few minor setbacks in our plans of an early getaway. We had told Tina we'd be there in time for the famous breakfast of pancakes!... elephant ears if Grandpa is cooking.

We were up at 4:00 AM! We had to load seven children and some last minute loading of the Aqua glass tub surround that would be needed for Patrick's bathroom renovation project that he was working on at the Ranch. This was more challenging than we wanted at this hour of the morning... Even though Channa has a new fancy busvan... it wasn't quite big enough for us to put the Aqua glass in the back... so we tried different locations and finally put it along the side of the van and just loaded the kids up and over each time we got in or out... It also was in the way for long legged Patrick to relax, and items that were tossed in the van and fell behind it were gone for the duration of the trip... but all in all the best thing to come of this difficulty was the new mantra... (think Nemo).. "Curse you Aqua glass!" This came in handy many a time during our trip. Loading, unloading, fitting it into the bathroom... having it not fit perfectly and needing a few adjustments, having it take soo long to install. "Curse you Aqua glass!"

Regardless of why... we got a later than planned for start, but we were still on the road before six am. Most of the children fell asleep... all but Derek of course, but he had a movie to watch so he was at least content. We were half way on our trip at our Maverick station in Kemerer, WY when we saw the sign... Ice cream sandwiches 5/$1.00. It was almost 8 am we were supposed to be pulling into the Ranch about now and having breakfast of pancakes and eggs and bacon... the kids had all woken and they knew we were having breakfast when we get to the Ranch... but were kinda getting hungry. When on vacation and the sign says 5/$1.00 you don't argue... you walk up to the gas station attendant with 9 ice cream sandwiches before 8 am and then you eat just outside the door at the little red picnic table and convince the kids that it's normal!

Tina held breakfast for us and we enjoyed our pancakes and eggs and bacon when we finally pulled in just before 10! Pancake breakfast at the Ranch will always be a special memory. Duncan never eats so much as he does at the Ranch breakfast table. Grandpa's pancake recipe was finally written down by Tina as she watched him since he just sorta throws it all together... doesn't have a recipe. The lingo at the Ranch table is learned over time as elephant ears, smear, bowl a'lick, calf slobbers, sinkers and floaters, get passed around the table time and again!

We are always grateful to have a Ranch to go to as an escape from the crazy city life and always feel so welcomed even though we tend to bring mayhem and chaos with us and I'm sure they enjoy their 'peaceful' life!

Prompt: What do you want for lunch?

This prompt assignment was a flop! The kids thought I would take their 'orders' seriously... I wasn't about to make 4 different lunches! It was a writing assignment already!

If it had been for real... then I would have received my order too... a catered lunch that everyone would eat that didn't leave any dirty dishes behind!

Duncan wanted pizza. Miles wanted waffles with berries and whip cream! Sarah wanted Mandarin Chicken Pasta Salad. (I actually could have gone for that one!) Caleb twigged in to the fact that I wouldn't be serving up their orders so he wrote... "fried worms, rats blood and sweet and sour roly poly bugs!" Which loosely translated, I'm sure meant... Macaroni and Cheese!

Bells Perks

Hooray.. my paralysis is NOT here to stay! It has slowly begun to clear up. It leaves a lot slower than it came on but after ten days I began to see improvements. Today, although I still have a tender face, the smile is almost normal and my eye is finally closing all the way by itself. The muscles that haven't been used and the ones that were overcompensating are glad to be trying to readjust to the old normal way of working. My eye only tears up now when it's late and I should head to bed... although it's a new 'late' now... no more 2am's for me... now it's 10:30... I feel old!

I've learned a lot about my bodies needs, the way the muscles in the face work, the way appearances affect how you are treated, about first impressions, about the humor of my children, the sensitivity of my husband, and an appreciation for things I had heretofore taken for granted.

Each morning with my frozen in place face my kids would come in to my room and the first thing they would say was.."smile Mummy"... no longer did I get "Good mornings" or "What are we doing today?". Instead they wanted to know if I had my face back yet. On more than one occasion Miles felt that if I didn't have my face back I should just stay in bed and get more rest... you know eat in bed... So for many mornings Miles brought me some lumpy oatmeal in bed. I don't think I've been treated so well on my birthday or mothers' day. (crazy face has some perks!)

Sarah, ever the optimist, would tell me each day that she was sure she saw improvement... Duncan would just giggle and then give me his best impression of a Bells smile! I couldn't wait to look in the mirror to assess my paralysis state myself. But all of the children knew that I had to rest and relax if this was to go away and I have the best kids anywhere... They wanted to know what else they could do to help me relax... and "do you want to take a nap mummy?" (I can't think of when I've taken a nap), but I did a few times over the last few weeks..

Without the ability to taste food I 'almost' lost the desire to eat... now that the taste buds are back... I WANT TO EAT! But, whilst the taste buds were on holiday I wasn't much of a food prep kinda mum... the kids and Patrick were pointing it out more than periodically that 'they can still taste food... if I make it!' It just wasn't much fun to prepare fajitas and apple cobbler and lick your fingers out of habit because you want a little pre-dinner taste only to not have any taste reaction in your mouth...

The bells was effectively a mask... what others saw... but of course I hadn't changed ... I would still try to smile at a toddler or make a funny face to try to make someone stop being grumpy... and of course all these attempts came out the same since as soon as I would try, I could tell my face hadn't done what I was attempting... I missed the ability to just use facial expressions to show understanding at the grocery store when a lady was struggling with her children, to thank someone driving for letting me in the lane and so many more times I realized how often I use my face to convey a message.

I learned lessons about so many things from this experience. Listen to your body! When you are run down, don't push even further. Sleep is a good thing!... and actually you get more done by going to bed and getting rested than staying up and pushing when you are tired! I gained an appreciation of knowing that this was temporary for me... but not for some people and how both physically and emotionally exhausting having my face frozen for two weeks was for me... I can only imagine someones struggle with lifelong issues. Optimism... SO IMPORTANT... no point fretting over something... it will pass when it will pass and I will be fine.

First impressions... I think although I've always known this, I've really gained a deeper desire to always give a second chance and always look past appearances. I had to meet many city officials and go to a stake level primary presidency training with people I'd never met before. I was extremely self conscious eating the light dinner at the training meeting since eating isn't something I could do very daintily.

Although very uncharacteristic of me... Bells also happened during a very hectic two week period of life that didn't give me much time to shop, cook or prepare meals even if I had felt like it so.. when we didn't have a supper at 7:30 for the third night in a row.... Patrick started to take over... We had pizza, burgers, and taco bell. Although it adds up money wise it sure was a help during chaos not to cook... so much so that I even took the kids one evening to Subway. Now when we traveled to Texas this summer we ate at Subway a fair bit and we learned not to step up to the counter until we knew what we wanted so we didn't frustrate the people behind us or the servers. (Rule was, no changing your mind once we step up to the counter!) We'd had some frustrating moments with impatient servers and impatient customers wiating behind us... and although I thought both rude to be so impatient when the five of us were doing our best to place our orders, I also didn't see the need to aggravate them any further. So when we visited this subway with my crazy bells face, I knew I didn't want to be annoying. But I have to tell you I've never had such AMAZING Subway service... the server was willing to list the options clearly and wait while the kids placed their orders also... I had to repeat a few things since my speech was slurred a bit. He was so nice to me... and I'm sure my odd face had nothing to do with it... but it was a relief not to have him give the... 'don't you know what you're doing lady look'. As we left, we held the door open for a family coming in... A dad and his three girls... who were helping their blind father maneuver his way through the tables. Maybe I just went to the Subway that was used to assisting those with disabilities or maybe they come here for the same thoughtful service that I enjoyed... either way.. I enjoyed the ordering process that I'd come to dread for the first time.

While I certainly don't wish to have Bells again or wish it upon anyone... I was able to gain appreciation and understanding. I was able to learn from a trial... and hopefully, if that was the point to this little trial, I'll pass. (of course if that means moving on to more challenging trials then I'm sure I could learn more from the last one again instead!)

By the way... it's not a great diet... even though I couldn't taste food for just over 2 weeks... I didn't manage to lose any weight. I did eat some things that I know are good for me that I don't like though... why not... it all tasted the same!

A Special day, For Tina, James and Sam

Today is Tina's birthday (Patrick's sister) and her husband James' birthday.. and the day they were married over 20 years ago... and the day that their eldest son is giving his homecoming talk in church from his mission. Sadly, we just couldn't get to the ranch to be there but we hope our love and thoughts are there anyway.

I can only imagine that there are tears of joy from so much gratitude today....

To know that you are still married to your sweetheart over 20 years later and that they are still sweet to each other.
To have sent your son out on a mission and know that he had to endure some challenges that you couldn't be there physically to help him through, but he made it and he's back a better man.
To see the spiritual and emotional changes that have come from this great growing experience.
To have watched him grow up and become this great man.
To know that there is so much more for life to throw at him, but he's ready.
To see the next generation connect, as I know Sam and Clairee must have done.
To still be going a mile a minute and lovin' life.
To have changed for the better over the years and grown wiser with each challenge and joyful
experience.
What better gift to give a parent than a great life lived. Way to go Sam!
And to Tina and James, the fruits of your labor are before you in a righteous young man and it is good. Way to go you two!

Rush hour... Noble style -- part two

I had no idea what I was starting... a rumble was on! And somehow I was the new ringleader... HEY.. WAIT... I'm a shy, reserved person... who home schools her children and reads a lot of books... I DO NOT talk to all the neighbours nor do I make waves! But here I was over the summer making plans to bring about change for our neighbourhood!!
  • I contacted the school and voiced our complaints... Response...Oh... we'll have to see what we can do..... equals... nothing.
  • I questioned many of the neighbours asking for what has been tried over the years... Response... repeated requests of the school, petitioned the city for signs and crosswalks and sidewalks... (it should be noted that 10 years ago we did get crosswalks and that 4 years ago we got a sidewalk from one crosswalk to the corner of the street, so this gave me hope)
  • I wrote a letter to the neighbours asking that we all be united as we make waves and try to evoke change... Response... the neighbours all banded together to put their garbage cans lining the street so that people couldn't park along our streets...
  • I bought large orange pylons to put in the two crosswalks, I got myself an orange vest and looked for a hand held stop sign without luck. I made large signs that said "Not a pick up or drop off zone, Thank you" and "Please use 2700 West access to the School parking area" (I thought I should try to be polite still.) I printed up a flyer for those parents coming into our neighbourhood behind the school with a map highlighting the actual routes they ought to take to go to the school and explaining that this simply isn't a safe access for the students nor is it courteous to the people who live here. ... now I was ready for the first day of school...
I had 200 copies of the letter for the parents, I'd posted my signs out of the way but still very visible and put my pylons on the crosswalks... I chickened out of wearing my fluorescent vest but I did wear an orange shirt... There were eleven neighbours out watching that morning interested to know what was going to come of our actions... The other two ladies most involved with me Susan and Gina had to get their children off to school and then they met me at the main crosswalk where I stood in the middle of the road and handed out my flyer to each car as they came by.

We received many mixed reactions to our flyer, signs, pylons and us... many people were confused... "but this is how I've always driven to the school?", and "did something happen?", "doesn't this road go through anymore?", to "I can't believe this.", "You've got to be kidding me." to "@$%$... "... yes.. some were quite rude... others wouldn't even roll their windows down to take a flyer. We began at 7:50 and we were still handing out flyers until 8:15 and I might add without much of a break between cars... often there was a line of them... (I only had 30 flyers left when I was done) School starts at 8:20 so we knew that we were nearing the end when one lady rolled down her window and said "Hi, I'm the Crossing Guard coordinator for this district can I help you guys with something?"... She pulled over and parked and we met on the sidewalk to discuss things... She was a very nice lady and said this isn't the first time I've heard about this school's issues. Then the police started to show up... First the DARE officer assigned to this school, then a code enforcer officer, then a traffic officer, then another officer... who I guess didn't want to feel left out!

Mum who happened to be here for a very brief stop on her way home was also involved. She had taken a copy of our flyer and Duncan and had walked over to the school and was just milling around near the office as a fly on the wall to get a sense for the reaction that we were getting at the school. It wasn't too long before some complainers arrived and the principal was alerted to the action taking place. Mum volunteered that she had a copy of the flyer being handed out and that it was a peaceful request taking place in the neighbourhood to the north. She left and came to find us out on the streets.

The parents felt that we were causing a nuisance on the first day of school. The code enforcer let us know that while we had every right to make a stand and get this issue out in the open, we can not legally put up a sign, and that we had really gone about this all wrong... so get this... we're the bad guys! The other officers said...'well hold on... this has been an ongoing issue... we've been called out many times over this and as for going about it all wrong... what should they have done?' Apparently we should be taking our concerns to the city council... not the school and parents driving in? Ok... so the city council meeting is the next night we'll be there. Yes we'll take down our signs and what else do we need to be aware of and what are we to specifically ask of the city council?

So we have permission to assist children crossing the streets, and politely ask people to move if they are blocking our driveways and ask them to slow down in a school zone... and interestingly enough we learned a lot that morning for over an hour chatting with our new friends the officers who kindly didn't arrest us or fine us for our illegal signs. They did see many illegal actions such us parking on crosswalks, sidewalks, the wrong direction on the opposite side of the road, in front of fire hydrants, in front of driveways and mailboxes... oooooh... we were excited with all our info. that we were collecting... So based on what the officers were telling us there aren't many 'LEGAL' places for anyone to park on our street to begin with. 20' either side of a crosswalk, 15' either side of a fire hydrant, 5' either side of a driveway and mailbox.... So although we can not legally stop them from driving through our neighbourhood, too fast and too many at once even though the school lists our neighbourhood as the 'Safe Walking Route', they will happily patrol the area for the next few days and enforce code violations to discourage people from stopping.

We had hopefully made our point and we would certainly be attending the city council meeting the next night... Oh wait... while we were still chatting that morning... here comes the principal.... Finally showing an interest. She said all the right things to us... "Oh yes... I see the issue and we'll have to do something... back to school night is on Thursday we'll be able to inform parents better then and encourage carpooling." We all parted ways and went on with our days... only to meet again later that afternoon during the next rush hour...

I got tagged!

8 TV shows I love to watch
I have a TV downstairs that I rarely ever see and the one in my office is rarely on. I also only have rabbit ears for reception so that limits what I could even watch. I really don't watch anything regularly. Shows I enjoy watching when I remember are:
  1. Super Nanny (Sarah actually reminds me about this one, she loves it)
  2. Dancing with the stars... (last season.. this season doesn't look any good, and again.... the kids love it)
  3. Ruff Ruffman... (there are so many kids shows that I don't want to watch but this ones pretty funny, educational and upbeat)
  4. Are you smarter than a fifth grader? (but only because I think I am)
  5. Don't forget the lyrics. (I forget, but we think Jim should totally do this show and win the million!)
  6. Old 60's reruns, Dick Van Dyke, I dream of Jeanie, Bewitched, Gomer Pyle....
  7. Most shows that I watched aren't on anymore or I'm an old fuddy duddy or I just don't have any time.
  8. I prefer movies... you get to pick the time and the genre.
8 Favorite restaurants

  2. Olive Garden, I've never been disappointed with anything I've tried there.
  3. Johnny Carino's, Pat's company had their Christmas employee dinner there a few years in a row and I enjoyed going, so I was disappointed when they switched last year to Outback Steakhouse... which I didn't enjoy.
  4. I love Greek, especially a good Gyro or salad. There aren't too many places for them here. I remember when I was 15 I worked in the mall at Suzy Shier and my friend Dennis' family owned Souvlaki plus in the food court and I was treated to many a yummy break time greek style!
  5. Sweet Tomatoes, I've only been once but I loved it.

  8. Seven years ago when driving through Vegas to L.A. on my way to Sparky and Valerie's wedding with Pierre, he stopped at any In and Out Burger place we saw along the way... even if he'd eaten only an hour earlier... he was addicted.. But it was a great burger!
8 Things that happened yesterday
"you mean I only have to do eight things each day!?" Wish I'd learned that sooner!
  1. Worked in the garden and brought in another bowl of tomatoes and zucchini, thought about pulling the beets but knew I wouldn't have time to deal with them and gazed at the apple trees to assess how long I'd be canning in October.
  2. Ran the dishwasher twice and three loads of laundry, washed, hung out on the line, ironed and put away.
  3. Taught school (that hardly seems to do it justice)
  4. Ran the vacuum upstairs
  5. Received 21 phone calls (Yes I checked my phone log)
  6. Put the pylons out on the crosswalk morning and afternoon, crossed children and logged license plates for 14 illegally parked cars to give to the detective.

Prompt: Tell about an embarrasing moment.

What an easy prompt for me...

My life... the end!

OK OK... so I just mean I don't embarrass easily and that I frequently do things that others might be embarrassed by but I don't care!

But I do have one moment that stands out for me because of course I was recognized for it!.

It would be my golden plunger moment! I lived in the dorms my first year in college and the dorms had a get together once a week to keep everyone up to date on announcements and such. One thing they did periodically was to award the golden plunger (yes a toilet plunger spray painted gold!) to a resident of the dorm for an embarrassing moment that happened during their week.

I was set up on a blind date. He picked me up and took me back to his apartment where we were supposed to meet up with his roommate and my friend who set up the date. They left a note for us letting us know that they wouldn't be there until later. Awkward... Ok.. well he had made dinner for us, so while we waited for dinner to be done, he whipped out his guitar and started singing for me.

Thankfully dinner wasn't long until it was ready. We ate some kind of chicken casserole thing in relative quiet... some small talk I'm sure. I hadn't even finished my meal before I felt queasy. I excused myself to the bathroom which was... well.. a men's college bathroom... I was sure to only hover over the seat. I was okay, so I returned to finish my meal. As I got back to the table I had to turn right around and head back for the bathroom... this time the toilets' state of cleanliness did not even phase me as I leaned over and lost my dinner. As I came out this time, he was heading in... He didn't have to say anything for me to know what he had to do. We took turns going in and out of the bathroom a few times. Needless to say we threw out the leftovers.

I was hoping to go home at this point, but I guess he felt fine after unloading his stomach and wanted to head over to a little place in town to go mini golfing and sumo wrestling where we would meet up finally with my friend and his roommate. I suggested that we just do this some other time, I wasn't up to activities but he thought we should at least stop and let them know that we were bailing. FINE! I have puke breath... nothing in my stomach, a headache from retching but by all means lets go to a college hangout! I wish we had walked... I was now having dry heaves on the side of the road in front of the activity place. But by all means lets go on inside! It was loud and bright. He suggested we grab a burger since we hadn't had much of a dinner... "Uh, no thanks.. just a drink for me" That proved to just give my stomach something to lose, so I found a bathroom in a hurry. I seriously figured I'd just leave the bathroom and walk home from here now.... I was so done with this date. As I came out though.. my friend, his roommate and he (seriously wish I could remember his name) were waiting for me. They had decided we should all do the sumo wrestling. That was definitely that last thing I wanted to do. He obviously hadn't mentioned how our evening had progressed so far. I was glad we'd found my friend. "I need to go home actually." They all tried to persuade me to stay. Didn't anyone else get that throwing up in random bathrooms was not a fun night? Thankfully I won. He took me home. Not a word in the car and he was obviously rushing me home! Just before we got to the dorms I told him I was going to be sick again, so he pulled over and let me get out to heave... he leaned over and said.. "You're pretty close from here, maybe you should just walk."

I was glad to be let out! I went home, brushed my teeth and climbed into bed.

I wish it ended there but it doesn't... The next afternoon, when I was not at home, he came by and delivered a pie and a message that 'we never had a chance to have dessert so he was hoping we could get together again.' He came by everyday for the next week, always with some baked or home cooked item. I guess he wanted to prove that he could cook without making me heave. I didn't even like the looks of the first two items he brought (although one roommate tried the pie) but after three of four days had passed be brought some goodies that my roommates and I all sampled.... We were all sick that night! When he would stop by with his goodies he often tried to sing to us or just sit there and nothing would be said for long awkward moments. He would always leave abruptly though.. just up and be gone... sometimes not saying anything at all, just walking out the door. I wasn't mean to him, I understood that he hadn't intentionally tried to induce me to vomit more than once. I just didn't find that he and I ever had anything to discuss and his singing was really starting to drive me bonkers! It took him a while to believe that I wasn't interested thanks... and not just in his cooking. He did finally leave me alone and it was a few months before I was willing to accept someone setting me up on another blind date. But hey.... I won a golden plunger to stick in my front window for all to see.

Rush hour... Noble style -- part one

We bought our house on a quiet little cul-de-sac. At the time we moved in I was working full time at the charter school where the kids were going to school. We had to leave home by 7:15 each morning to take Duncan to his childcare and then get everyone to school on time by 8:10. School didn't end each day until 3:20, although since I had to run the traffic and carpool afterschool pick up and sometimes had staff meetings, we never were able to leave the school before 4:15 and sometimes even that was a challenge and then we began our commute home and picked up Duncan and began the ever dreaded, dinner, homework and piano practice, scouts and other evening activities... We were dropping into our beds... those who had them...(explain in another post sometime about that!) absolutely exhausted..... So... after living in our home for 6 months we very much enjoyed our quiet little cul-de-sac throughout the summer..... HOWEVER..... we had had enough of the insanity... We weren't going anywhere the next year... I signed up for K12 curriculum and haven't looked back!... We stayed home!...

What a shock it was for us then when we discovered that as of the first day of school for the traditional elementary school that is located behind our street, we no longer lived on a quiet cul-de-sac.... We wondered what was going on that had a constant stream of traffic coming down and turning around in our little circle... and then to top it all off they were stopping wherever they could find a spot... sometimes in the middle of the road and letting their children out to run through the little pathway into the back of the school....

I was puzzled but we went on with our day only to discover at 2:40 that afternoon as we were getting ready to take my kids to piano lessons that we couldn't back out of our driveway... and that the street was completely lined with parked cars... most had people in them but they weren't showing any signs of leaving any time soon. I convinced the lady stopped at the end of my driveway that I needed out and she needed to move but she obviously was put out by it! I then got turned around to head down the street as swarms of children started to exit the little pathway behind the school and all the cars previously lining the street were in motion... it was like an obstacle course played out with small children and cars. For me to drive past the 7 houses to the turn at our street and then drive the one block so I could get to the main road and leave the neighbourhood took me 15 minutes.... usually less than 1.5 minutes is enough! I was flabbergasted! I thought... I am so glad I'm home schooling my kids, this first day of school stuff is for the birds!

When this continued to be the pattern EVERY DAY... TWICE A DAY... for the rest of the school year... I was beginning to feel my blood boil.... I couldn't send my children out to play, I had to plan to run errands around what we referred to as Rush Hour, and the number of times I thought I would have a heart attack as I saw child after child almost be hit when the obstacle course went amuck. As I spoke with people in my new neighbourhood I learned that they also were dismayed by the traffic but that it has been like this for as long as they can remember.... Except for one guy who said he used to go to that school as a kid and it was fine since there weren't any houses or traffic coming to the school 30 years ago.... hmmm... So I learned that complaints had been made for over 37 years regarding the safety of the children and the excess traffic.... So why after all these years was it still so bad?

Prompt: Do you have a favourite colour? What does your favourite colour make you think of and what makes it special?

My oh my... did this prompt ever cause tension in my home today!!! "That's really three questions.. that's not fair!" "It's a silly question", "Who cares", " That's too much writing!"

aye yi yi!!

I was personally looking forward to it although choosing only one colour was too much of a task!
I like different colours for different reasons! I've also always felt that different days of the week lend themselves in my mind to a different colour.... (I know I'm going off the deep end now)

Red makes me think of accomplishing things. Mondays... beginning of the new week, great intentions and plans... a rush of excitement of starting a fresh week with grand goals. Anything is possible with a red Monday! Red is confidence, importance and prosperity. Red is berries, apples, sweet smelling roses, fast cars and tomato soup.

Blue is my Tuesday colour. I like blue. It is refreshing and soothing. I likely need a more relaxing day and colour after my build up of red Monday.
I have tried for many years to convince people that I have a blue theme in my kitchen... but who am I kidding... the walls are a gorgeous yellow/orange and I have wooden cabinets and I've picked out a charcoal counter top... No blue in sight... the washcloths and tea towels are blue... and the cups in the cupboard used to all be blue.. now I have a whole rainbow in there.
Blue is still productive and steady, but peaceful. It is confident and conservative, trustworthy and truth. Blue is skies, water, the wind, my bluebirds and ink.

Yellow is Wednesday's colour.... It's calm. By now the house should be clean and the week running smoothly *lol* but the week is halfway by know as well and I have a sense of how the rest of the week is going and how much I'll really be accomplishing this week and it's a happy day. No stress, I've made it this far and if it isn't going well I can still change for the better but if it is going well... then smooth sailing ahead... Just a happy colour! Yellow is hope and courage. Yellow is childhood smiling and laughter. Yellow is a banana, a sunrise, daffodils, ducklings and chicks, a baby blanket and corn on the cob.

Green is a Thursday colour. It's almost a lazy day around here. No normal meetings scheduled or extra lessons of any kind... a kick back and enjoy nature kind of day. Green is renewing, healthful, stable and balancing. It is responsible without having to stress too much. Green is a new plant, a fresh vegetable, the grass when I remember to water it, a park, a shade tree, mints and lime sherbert!

Orange is Friday... but it's not a halloween orange... it's a burnt orange, rustic orange a BEAUTIFUL colour... it's warm and inviting, it's restful and relaxing... OK.. so orange is really up there as one of my favourite colours. Why Friday? Because the week is done and we're going to enjoy the weekend. Patrick would argue that the work is just beginning. But now I feel like it's not the mundane anymore, it's the fun, the projects, the things I just can't let myself get sidetracked by all week long and yet I want done or to be doing! It's a beautiful colour... like a gorgeous sunset! Orange is stimulating mentally and emotionally. Orange suggests staying home and family, a fun game or a good book. Orange is a warm fire, a pumpkin pie, apple cider, autumn leaves and crisp mornings.

Brown is like an accent colour. On it's own it struggles, but with other colours the brown is what is so alluring. Brown is my weekend. Brown pulls it all together, keeps me constant and going. Many shades of brown work... Some weekends are taupe and just sort of happen.. others are a deep chocolate brown, full and rich in activity and excitement! Weekends can be almost any colour because it's based on what we've got going on.. but always it's accented with a great brown! Brown is honest, dependable and wholesome. Brown is hot chocolate, a garden bed, fresh baked goods, cardboard boxes waiting to be turned into a house or a car, big brown eyes, brown paper packages and UPS.

Handsome Lad

I often refer to my boys as handsome lads when they are all dressed and ready for the day and actually comb their hair. I actually think that Miles and Caleb look fine without combing since they keep their hair so short it doesn't make much difference... they both like to spike it from time to time though.... but Duncan has a different kind of hair. He has a major cowlick in the front and a definite widow's peak but he can sport a tousled I'm adorable do and totally work it!... So I was sort of sad when one afternoon after being in the bathroom a while he came out announcing that he was a handsome lad now and don't touch his hair!... He had spritzed his hair with water, combed it out and then gelled it down....
It's such a different look for him... he is indeed a handsome lad but he seems to be growing up much too fast for him Mummy's liking.
Fortunately handsome lad hair takes a while to do so he doesn't always bother but on his first day of school he was certain that he needed handsome lad hair... So I have a photo now of my handsome lad!

Guinea Pigs

So I homeschool my children with a great program called k12.com... I'm all about free and this is amazingly the best curriculum around AND it's totally free! I'm not a big preschool person... Caleb never went, Sarah never went, Miles did a joyschool thing... (homeschool preschool), and Duncan I wouldn't bother with either except he's bored and older than his years.

Duncan was born after the ridiculous cut off date here in Utah of Sept. 1st... only 25 days after! So even though I homeschool we can't order the curriculum for him to start school this year..... Oh well... I'm sure I can keep him occupied with worthwhile educational endeavors anyway.
While at the library.. which we are at a lot... I saw a flyer for a free preschool... Free is of course what caught my eye. Then come to find out it's the exclusive Waterford Private School offering a free class three days a week Sept. to April as a research program... So if I'm willing to let Duncan be a guinea pig, he can attend Waterford preschool for free.

Duncan and Cooper started preschool last week!

They are excited and are loving it. It is almost entirely on computers and it's solely so they can gather data and the differences in children attending is as diverse as it comes! Channa and I take turns driving since it is downtown. Don't tell the boys it's just a research program... they love going to their computer school!

**********CHANNA SEND ME THE PICS OF THEM AT SCHOOL!! *******************

He can read!

So we were lounging in bed this morning when we heard very excited Duncan screeches from the kitchen. We had to ask a few times what was going on since he was so excited we weren't sure what he was saying and then it was clear.... "He can read!"

Great... Who? He had run into our room by now and was so excited to relate that the signs, that used to be on the door this summer so the bugs who couldn't read would stop coming in, that were just sitting on the counter now since I decided to finally take them down last night.... "the fly landed on the signs and read it and flew away"... "He can READ!"

We like to think we are making a difference at our little home school.... one bug at a time.

45 years of Jim!

Well.. for some of us it's less because we haven't been around THAT long!

3 questions: Name what comes to mind when I say Uncle Jim. Tell me about his house. What is your favourite thing about having Uncle Jim nearby.

Caleb
-crazy, and fun and pterodactyl, Chess (but I win)
-his house is really different, it suits Jim's style very 70's.
-He makes you laugh every time and he's lots of fun...

Sarah
-he's funny, he is also fun to play games with, he gives us all piggy back rides, he brings Marina and Rhyanna over sometimes, he has good hiding spots when we play hide and go seek
-his house is fun, and he has a croquet game, he also has a cool Darth Vader thing, he has cool music, he writes things on his door.
-he usually comes by and we get to see him whenever.

Miles
-playing chess and stratego, pterodactyl sounds, the first time he came here it was my birthday
screeching with him,
-he has a Darth Vader bank, he has stuff on his door, he let us have a party at his house at Christmas, He brings us food like cherries sometimes. He helped us cook macaroni once it was good.
-he is available to come over sometimes early in the morning like me cause he works all night. I like when he talks to us, he asks me lots of questions.

Duncan
-he calls me ogre or pig or he squeals, like me, he is really silly, lots of squealing, he tries to knock me down on the couch, he sleeps on the couch at our house,
-his house is loud. He has a cool car and I like all that, he works at his house on his roof because Jim can work on the roof because he is a dad... his work didn't have any more gloves for me

The all mighty master, Jim is well known for nicknames.. both nice and not so nice... ones that don't last long like Maggie, and others that pop up from time to time... like rusty poo stains! Thanks to his first love in elementary school I was given a middle name of Beth... it definitely could have been worse!

It's been really fun getting to know Jim all over again as an adult ... He was already a teenager when I was born and then there were 15 years I didn't even live in the same country as Jim... so these last three years have been fun. The kids have loved getting to know a big kid who yes.. the pterodactyl screeching could be toned down... but they know Jim's here when they hear the sound! Many a good memory starts with a good pterodactyl screech... Caleb's trip with the girls to Yellowstone, a day at his work, plenty of good dinners, Christmases, Tennis games, MANY a Chess game, afternoon siestas and soo much more!!! Always a good time with Uncle Jim around!

We are looking forward to more fun Uncle Jim adventures in the future.

Birthday Surprises

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... I am a huge copy cat I guess is what I'm really trying to say! Genevieve (still totally cool neighbour from old neighbourhood) started something.... During the summer of fun with all the cousins, there were SOO many birthdays to be celebrated...
She surprised us by decorating our front yard with birthday decorations and a banner for each of the birthday celebrators!... She even decorated our van since we were leaving to go camping on one of the kids birthdays! (I'll never know how late she must have stayed up waiting for us to finish packing for our trip so she could come decorate!) We tried to reciprocate but she is always a step ahead of us or in her garage so we can't sneak up!

So, now that we've moved... we tried to be the cool neighbours. We decorated our friends house for each of her children's birthdays. She thought that was so sweet... Until I decorated for her birthday!!... but what's more I made a deal with her oldest to call me in the morning and unlock the front door... I planned to come in, leave breakfast on the kitchen table and kidnap all her kids and bring them back to my house so she could have a relaxing birthday morning... Little did I know her husband had taken the day off work as a birthday surprise... So after EVERYONE had a surprise that morning... I apologized for not bringing enough pancakes and fruit and still took all the kids and told him to go back to bed!

The baby was the only one a little confused by being snatched out of her highchair but once she saw Sarah she was fine and we had a lovely pancake breakfast at my house and they all played for an hour and a half until my freshly showered and rested friend came for her kids!

I totally get the rush that Genevieve must get!!!... I wish I could be a birthday fairy full time!!

The pics just don't do it justice... they don't show the sneakiness needed nor the excitement of pulling it off. And I just didn't take enough pics... or even get everyones!

Sharing Birthdays

I don't know why I feel it's so cool to share a birthday... In my life I know many a shared birthday.

Feb. 23rd, Carlos(Paige's husband) and John (Channa's husband)
March 4th, Miles (son), Eden(sister) and Bronmin(friend)
April 1st, Paige (sister) and Ava (niece)
June 8th, Sarah (daughter) and Sadie (niece)
June 27th, Tree (nephew), Robyn(niece) and Brandon (nephew)
Sept. 10th, Jim (brother) and Jessica (friend)
Sept. 21st, Tina (sis-in-law) and James(bro-in-law)(married same day to each other too)
Nov. 4th, Kara (cousin) and Audrey (niece)
Nov. 15th, Robert (Doug's son) and Neal (nephew), Carrol Noble (Pat's Grandpa)
Nov. 26th, Nova (ME) and Katie (Patricks bio. sister), Paul (old but still very cool neighbour!)

Of course it may not matter if you actually share the birthday with the person or not... we've been lumping birthdays together for the last year ... I guess we were just too busy or there are too many close by... From Feb to March we plan one for John, Patrick, Miles, Kenzie... Valerie just think if you move to SLC you can be lumped into the Spring party!

In the late fall we have a Channa, Grandpa BC, Cooper, Derek, Duncan and Nova party... again.. Audrey would be lumped!

Sarah and Caleb always end up celebrating theirs somewhere else since we galavant throughout the summer! and then we're done!

I'm just so glad I get to be one of the shared ones!

Prompt: Where is your favourite place to hide?

Ready or Not!

I love playing hide and seek... sometimes I'll suggest the kids play the game just to get them out of my hair and then they're having fun or struggling with where to hide and I always end up playing with them. They love hiding inside things... like in the laundry bin, or in the garbage can, or inside the bottom cabinet of the computer desk, under the bed, in the bed if the laundry is on it waiting to be folded all the better!. I've hidden Duncan in a coat hanging in the front closet, obviously lying in the bathtub, or sitting on top of the freezer, in the dog's kennel, and in daddy's suitcase since it doesn't get put away much these days!!

In our old neighbourhood, we played 'kick the can', a nighttime neighbourhood version. Lots of fun and all the kids would dress in black.. it was like our streets cult came out after dark to play this hiding game... it involved kids and adults by the time the evening was over... We probably played at least once a week all summer long! We hid in all the front yards up and down the street looking for the best shadows and sneaking off so our footsteps couldn't be heard! The race for the can could be rather dangerous at times but always fun fun fun! If you had a good hiding spot you never revealed it to anyone!

Desperation led to this version in a Dr's office. We had such a long wait one time in our Dr.'s office. We had been shown to the exam room but the doctor wasn't coming.. There weren't any toys in the exam room and needless to say we were growing restless. So, one person closed their eyes and sat on my lap and everyone else had to hide somewhere in the room and stay very quiet and still and then the 'it' person had to find them without looking! It was pretty fun... the Dr. was amused when she came in also. We now take a blindfold with us to all our appointments!

Growing up places to hide.. mum was great at finding spots. I loved hiding on the kitchen chairs all tucked in under the table. There was always a rumor that Jill could hide in the water pipes... starting in one bathroom and ending up in another.... We never quite figured it out so maybe she really could... Channa seems to recall that she ended up in the neighbours toilet one time too....

Having a few acres with forest and a pond and lots of great hiding areas made for a GREAT game at Jill's on Hornby. Of course after a while sometimes people forget how many people they're supposed to be looking for... I had hidden on the rope swing that hangs out over the pond... Great idea as long as someone is still looking for you... but after quite a while I hear "Games over" but but... I'm stuck over the pond... you can't just stop! I called for a while but just had to wait until they realized that I wasn't coming in like everyone else and they would have to come find me! It was under ten minutes that I waited over the pond... but you start to have thoughts up on a small rope swing over a pond... 'maybe I should jump in, I wonder how deep it is in this spot?', 'they would miss me after a while, I wonder how long I might be here', 'I wonder why they stopped the game','How am I going to get down from here?'
Jill's house proved to be a fantastic place for a game one winter also... I wasn't there for it but the power was out and in the woods when the power is out it's rather dark!! A very eerie game of hide and seek... Grandma said she just stood still in the room for one hiding session. A dark that you can't see your own hand in front of your face!

"I ready, I hiding, I in da fwog" -- Sarah will forever be famous for her line during a game when she was almostt 2 yrs. Jill, Grandma and Bailey were visiting when Miles and Mackenzie were born. We had, and still do actually, a laundry bag that is a flexible pop up variety, dark green and it had (doesn't anymore), a frog's head that opened and closed over the top. She was indeed ready and hiding and in the frog, but didn't quite have the concept of waiting quietly!! We all used that line for many years!

What you wear...

Flylady says... "dress to the shoes"
Hello Dolly says "put on your sunday best when you feel down and out"
Annie says.. "you're never fully dressed without a smile"

So I'm getting ready for church today! I have on shoes to satisfy Flylady... I'm wearing my Sunday best for Dolly... but I guess I can't be fully dressed because I can only lopsidedly smile.

It was sort of funny to have only a half working face when only my family was laughing at me and people via the internet that I don't actually have to see their reactions... but I'm heading out the door to stand in front of the primary and teach them a new song... and I don't even know if I can sing it myself... those poor sunbeams may need spit guards!

It might not be so bad if this wasn't my first week as the chorister! The nursery is going to be scared of me from the beginning.

It's official... I have no taste!

or feelings for that matter!

literally though... I have Bells Palsy... that's partial paralysis of the face.... and included in this phenomenon... is the lack of ability to taste food anymore! I may lose weight with this little number since there isn't much appeal to eating cardboard three times a day and that is what essentially any food tastes like to me... except for the food that tastes metallic and that isn't worth taking a second bite of! Of course added to the beauty of this problem is that with the paralysis of my upper lip I can no longer eat daintily!... or for that matter without half of almost every bite ending up on my shirt!... the kids think this is hilarious and mimic my attempts to put my non compliant lips around my spoon... and they go on and on about how tasty lunch is or "try the sauce... it's full of flavour".... Where did these obnoxious children come from?

I'm still suffering from seasonal allergies.. albeit now only on the side of the face that isn't non emotional!!... so one eye is red, itchy and watery and the other eye is drying out!... one nostril is dripping like a faucet and the other is so dry I'll probably have a nose bleed later and not feel it as it drips down my lip and chin! I have some letters of the alphabet that are next to impossible to pronounce properly... so some of my family will have to change their names to accommodate me or move out...

This too shall pass... I just wish I knew when... the treatment is plenty of rest and relaxing techniques... get rid of stresses, remain calm and quiet, wear sunglasses to avoid brightness, moisten the eyes so they don't dry out... I guess only the one... the other is moist enough right now.. Eat well, and maintain good oral hygiene... that one was odd I thought... but whatever... nothing too major in that list... so... how long... it depends... for some a few days... for others weeks and still others months... until then.. I guess I could plan to be the phantom of the opera for Halloween! or at least charge admission to let people watch the freak eat a meal...
Today's phonics lesson with Miles was quite hilarious... combine my non functioning lips with new orthodontic retainers in my mouth and I was telling him to listen for the ending sound of words that end in 'ED' to tell me if they were 'd', 't', or 'ed'... of course it came out (with spittle everywhere) 'duh', 'tsa' and 'ud'... the kids were all ROFL... and telling me to say that again!!! We skipped that lesson and went on to math...

Patrick is determined that this was caused by so much blogging, I think he may be partly correct... since I no longer sleep because I'm obsessed with finishing all the blogging thoughts before I lose them... so I think it's the lack of sleep... and stress... both I suppose due to blogging... So I will have to do daytime blogs from now on... no more late night blogging.... I hope it's not like TV... daytime blogs might have to be steamy and trashy... unlike late night blogging which can be more newsy and humorous.

I just had a thought... I wonder if this is caused from all the stress surrounding the Janet Shumway lurking and stalking???.... (don't worry... I just slapped myself in the face for having another negative thought towards this great lady... *mind you it didn't hurt me because my face is numb!!*)
