Gus

The kids have taken up little schoolyard chants lately... like the silly verses made up to go with birthday songs... So I thought I'd give it a try

Happy birthday to Gus
Happy birthday to Gus
It's your day to make a fuss
and go to school on the bus!

Ok.. it's not my forte! I hope the day is great even if my little song isn't! We don't see nearly enough of you and you grow up too fast!

Gus with little Clairee!

Happy Birthday GUS!

Big Steps and Baby Steps

It's that time of year when some children think they can just up and grow up! Neal, Rhyanna and Jessica are all graduating from high school this week.
Jessica we only met two months ago... so I'm cool with her graduation.

Neal will always be a 4 year old in my mind who rides his bike and goes on adventures in the willow bushes and checks periodically to see if I've baked any cookies lately! I know he's taking the next 'big step', off to college now in ID.

I've known Rhyanna since before she was born. Channa, Bailey and I took the ferries from Hornby Island and drove down to Victoria when it was announced that she had arrived! We couldn't wait to greet the new niece. Now this sweet little girl is grown and has big dreams for her next 'big step' in life. She's looking at Universities back east.

Even Sparky is taking a 'big step'... graduating from UC San Diego with his PhD. Moving his sweet family across the country to the BIG city on the east coast and starting a real job! This doesn't mean that since he's a bigwig government worker with a doctorate that we'll have to start calling him Dr. Graton... does it... I don't think any of us could call him anything but Sparky even if we tried!

I think I'm happy with the upcoming baby steps to look forward to in August. Perhaps it will help me to not focus on the children of my life no longer being children... The thought of even looking at my own children... the teenager, (now officially taller than me!) who will go to his first dance this summer and start highschool this fall!... the daughter who will next week have reached a decade on earth and has more fashion sense than I'll ever have.. my 8 year old scouting boy who does everything full throttle... and until August, my baby who is now reading and doing tricks on his two wheeler and heading off to friends without me...

Miles first Pinewood Derby

A very much anticipated event! He came home from pack meeting a month ago with his block of wood and was ready to carve out his car that night! We only restrained him for about two days before he and Grandpa began working on the car! They talked over designs and the technical issues of the race car. Once the design was settled on, he began the cutting process. Grandpa did assist with some of the cutting. Miles became very good at sanding and at asking... "Is this smooth enough?"

Once it was finally deemed smooth enough, we went to the next stage. Painting. I offered a few color options from the spray paint we had on hand. He decided on a yellow colour with a black stripe ... like a bee... Then he could use the phrase from CARS... "Float like a cadillac, sting like a bee" (He didn't realize that it's actually sting like a beemer)

Our painting day was not working with us! An overcast and damp day. But we did get the yellow paint on after he practiced his spray painting skills on an old brick in the grass to learn about distance and even coverage to avoid drips. Waiting for the paint to fully dry before another coat took it's toll on the not so patient Miles. He wanted to get the stripe on the car! The fact that it hadn't been a week yet since he started the project and the race wouldn't take place for another 3 weeks would not deter him! We insisted that he wait for Daddy for painting since I wasn't interested in being near the stinky paint fumes! An entire week after the first coat of paint they finally taped off the car for the stripe job. The black stripe looked great!

Only 2 1/2 weeks until the race and now we just needed to adjust the weight and add the wheels. The car was weighing in light. Our scale only measured in grams so we looked up the conversion and hoped we were close enough. Learning to control the chisel so he didn't take a huge chunk of car out that needed to stay in was the most difficult part of making the car. The bottom section was chiseled out for weights to be glued in. The wheels were all that was left and we had 2 weeks until the Derby!

Daddy insisted that the wheels didn't go on until the day before the race since it would be too tempting to play with it once the wheels were on! It was a very long 2 weeks! He frequently looked at the car in it's shoebox home up on the top shelf in the dining room.

Finally the night before the race was here! The axels were sanded down to make them smooth and the wheels were on! The car laying on it's back was placed in the box for 24 hours until the race. We watched Down and Derby that night to prepare for the big event.

I was giving a different kind of pep talk than Daddy and Caleb were. "Remember to look at the other kids cars. Congratulate the winner, whoever it is. Remember making the car was the project and the fun part.. the race is just to show everyone the cars you've made..."

"It's not all about winning!"

The graphite applied to the wheels before we left home... He was ready to race!

The Derby itself was a chaotic and frenzied cub scout affair as was to be expected. The weigh in went well and we were only 1/10 of an ounce under... A quick dime fixed the weight issue and he was registered. The scouts were all checking out each other's cars. There were some really interesting designs. A few kids had had some problems with wheels that kept falling off and some really big weight discrepancies, but as soon as the cars were all registered we were ready to begin!Unfortunately the design of Miles car caused a few problems at the starting pin since the pin wasn't as tall as we thought it would be and his car hung over the pin giving him an unfair advantage, so his car was placed in the starting gate at an angle to avoid the hangover! I hadn't realized this until later in the evening...The races were on!Can't you just hear the whirring of the wheels and sense everyone holding their breath as they wait the seconds for each race to finish...Duncan and Derek enjoyed their spot at the end of the track. They didn't care that the scores only appeared on the other side of the finish line. They liked watching the cars bump the end of the track!

It was a fun night... Miles had a great time. The results of the races were confusing, but Miles was thrilled with race results of 2nd, 2nd, 1st and 2nd on his four races of the evening!

A great photo finish!

The best photo of the night... I didn't take it.. I stole it off another mom's blog! But I love it!!! I didn't even ask her... she'll probably beat me up!
The excitement, the anticipation, all their work on their cars... it's right there in their faces!

Forties File Friday - Poll #1

The suggestion for a poll for a Forties File Friday sounded like a nice simple change... let's see how the response to it goes! Feel free to elaborate on any answer you please or just answer!

  • Skim, 1%, 2%, whole, rice, soy or other? And does anyone shake the milk jug before pouring a glass?
  • Do you like those hard candy sprinkles on top of your ice cream, cakes etc..?
  • Soap or bodywash?
  • Toothpaste or gel?
  • Goulash anyone?
  • Macaroni and Cheese... to top with Catsup or not?
  • Ice or no ice in your beverages?
  • Pop a zit... or leave it alone?
OK..
The poll results are arriving quickly... so I think it's a hit!

My answers are as follows:

*milk - I prefer skim normally.. currently I am enjoying 1%.. think it's a pregnancy thing though... Can't seem to do 2 or whole anymore... Not opposed to Soy or Rice though. I've never understood the shaking that Channa does when she is at my house.... It's not like the milk has separated and needs to be mixed. Besides it just makes it frothy... So I'm not a shaker, unless it's a milkshake.. and then count me in!

*Never cared for the hard candy sprinkles... my kids however LOVE them... go figure!

*hmmm.... depends on the mood I'm in... I'll do either... like them both with a loofah type scrunchy... it's more about unscented than variety!

*Gel all the way! Toothpaste made me nauseous with one of my pregnancies and I haven't looked back!

*I apologize to Mum, whom I'm sure was trying to make a simple meal that everyone would like... but I am not a fan of Goulash. And when Patrick made a hamburger helper meal once just after we were married... I accused him of making goulash and he didn't cook again for a long time!

*I do top homemade macaroni and cheese with Catsup... sometimes... but find that salt and pepper are often enough. My kidlets are all Catsup toppers!... Patrick still finds the idea very odd! (we've converted a few neighbours to catsup on mac n' cheese over the years!)

*I will do an ice cube or two in a beverage on a hot summer day if I think the ice will melt quickly and not spoil the taste, however if the drink is already cold from the fridge then no ice is necessary. Beverages from restaurants are requested 'sans ice'... and if the option to 'no ice' isn't available.. a straw is definitely necessary.

*Without a lot of experience in this department.... I do think we were fortunate not to have overly zit pocked skins growing up... I definitely believe in LEAVING THEM ALONE!! And NEVER requesting someone else to pop one for you that's in a difficult to reach area.... (I won't name names!)

Sam Man

BIG SIGHS.....

It hardly seems possible that this used to be the little boy I met 15 years ago. A sweet and thoughtful boy. He has become a sweet and thoughtful man. I blinked and missed it...

He has his whole life stretched out before him now and he's ready, so bring it on! (By the way... he's a single returned missionary, or maybe he's not single anymore.... but I haven't heard any rumors to the contrary as yet!)

Happy Birthday Sam Man!!

Help! I think I've lost something.....

...my own feet... I can feel them... they are swelling, so boy can I feel them... but I just haven't seen them in a while...

Best day ever...

and I can't even tell you exactly why...

I've always loved this day. I enjoy the whole month of May. Perhaps it's the in between Spring and Summer weather. Perhaps it's the little sprouting plants in the garden, the blossoming trees and flowers, or the sounds of birds twittering through the open window as I woke up this morning...

It's just a little neurosis of mine... I look forward to May 26th more than my true birthday... which coincidentally is exactly 6 months from today. In fact, forget my birthday, Valentines, my wedding anniversary... If people think of me on this day, I'll know I'm truly loved! (Patrick hasn't ever clued in.... remember one day.. and he can forget the rest.... oh wait.. he already forgets them!)

I tried desperately to have a child born in May and especially on the 26th.... Sarah was so cooperative.. it was her due date... so what is up with her birthday being June 8th and the crazy doctor who let me go so far overdue just to end up with a scheduled c-section!... (don't get me wrong... if it could have avoided the c-section... I was all for waiting.. but... umm... in hindsight.. c-section anyway!?!... I would sooooo have chosen this date) In later thoughts... much later thoughts... I realized that if one of my children were to be born on this date, would it have created a favouritism rift?? Perhaps there are greater more all knowing powers that choose baby dates...

Ahhh.. so blissfully it can still be my neurotic favourite day of the whole year! I don't have to do anything spectacular even... It's always a beautiful day... I do find myself humming "Oh what a beautiful morning, Oh what a beautiful day... I've got a wonderful feeling... everything's going my way..... " I refuse to admit that it's from the musical Oklahoma, even though finding that out did allow me to learn the lyrics to the rest of the song... No, instead it will always be the song that Grandma and Mum used to sing, and I blissfully assumed they were just thrilled with their day... their lives.......

perhaps... it's an hereditary neurosis...

Would it go past neurosis and into psychotic to mention that this year was especially delightful because it fell on a Tuesday.....

In a People House

I've introduced "Roquefort" the rat before. The IKEA plush that Duncan has. Cooper also has one. He has "Cheese". The boys acquired these friends at the same time. How they tell them apart is beyond me! Derek recently acquired his own rat.... he's joining the big boys! He has "Cheddar"... the white rat.

Why the fixation? I've no clue... and one might think they would shy away from them after what our cats brought in one night early this spring! In one weeks time the cats decided to brag about their hunting prowess! EWWW... the screeches could probably be heard in many areas of the world....

Thankfully, the hunt had been successful in not only catching but ending the wet, icky rats life. But discovering it in the hallway was not what Valerie wanted to do.

I have a love/hate relationship with the doggy door. There is a slight draft thanks to the doggy door, and the smallest visitors to my house enjoy the freedom to access the great outdoors... Derek and Alyssa!! I have been grateful that I don't have to be on top of letting the dog out to do her business, or making sure that the cats have come in for the night.... BUT.... as for the 'I'm-still-trying-to-erase-the-image-from-my-mind-rat-in-my-house' I'm tempted to put in a new door ASAP. Unfortunately this isn't the first 'critter'... It is however just this spring. We've been here 2 years and this spring they decided to bring their 'game' indoors.

The bird wasn't deceased and banged into one window and then another as we scrambled quickly to remove the screens so it could fly out... I'm not a bird fan in the house, never have been! The second bird ended up downstairs though and the mess of feathers as it attempted to escape the paws of Figaro.... I clogged the vacuum more than once!

The very worst was the mouse though... Audrey was visiting for this particular intrusion and found the guest intriguing. Duncan was quick to inform that he was brave. Sarah wanted to rescue her shoe from the Den where the dazed but oh yes still alive mouse was hiding out! I wanted it gone... and not to tell his friends and family about our welcoming doggy door either, but remind them about the two cats that would do them in should they ever try to darken our doorstep!

Thankfully since that dreadful early spring week... we've been critter free, except of course for Roquefort, Cheese and Cheddar... but I've come to terms with these three rats! Oddly the cats aren't even interested in them!

All work and no play...

I'd like to say that it makes Pat a dull boy... but I love the progress on the many projects. He's been in town for a whole 2 weeks now and Duncan asks each day. "Is Daddy going back to work again?". Completely confused child... Daddy still goes to work each day but also comes home each day. Since Duncan was born (and he's only 5), Patrick has been to Samoa, South Dakota, Ephraim UT, Elko NV, Page AZ, and Vernal UT. Even in town, he's working in Provo! Perhaps instead of buying our house 2 years ago we should have purchased an RV and traveled with Daddy... It's not as though we have to stay in town for school! LOL! Patrick loves the idea... then weekends wouldn't have the constant yard work and household tasks lists!

We're currently packing his suitcase again though... this time Hawaii.... guess our RV plan wouldn't work for this destination.... Chitty Chitty Bang Bang maybe? fly or float!... but I'm not into being bombed.... or suddenly ending up in Bulgaria... or maybe that would be a fun adventure... ok I digress.

I guess I shouldn't say ALL work... and 'no' play... we did take a few moments the other day when we went to tell the kids at the park that it was time to put the bikes away for the night and come home.....
The kids fixation on the Biggest Loser show this season brought all sorts of comments after that park moment!! Each night they continue to coax Daddy with,
  • "I'll go for a bike ride with you Daddy. It doesn't have to be too long... The trainers say even 15 minutes can make a difference."
  • "Daddy, do you want me to sit on your feet while you do sit-ups? The resistance can help."
  • "Daddy how about I dish up your dinner so you don't take too much. Portion control is important!"
  • "How about some Wii Fit, it won't even seem like exercising, cause it's fun!"
  • "Daddy, we're just trying to improve your quality of life." ...

So far he has smiled....

Birthday Biker!

As I think I mentioned, Daddy is going to be out of town for some events in June.. although his schedule seems to change daily and I finally told him that when he's actually on the plane then I'll know that he's gone...

Anyhoo... so in order to keep peace at home... and not feel like Daddy is missing important events... we scheduled the days in May that correspond with important days in June and celebrated them in May. If he ends up actually being here in June then... hmmm... I guess a second celebration with Daddy or we're good and just move it along... we'll see what June brings... but the point here is...

Sarah's birthday! The big 10! and Daddy can't be gone she wailed each time the schedule changed! So without lettting her know of our crazy May/June swapping plan we arranged to have a birthday of sorts. We've known for some time that she would be getting a bicycle for her birthday. That made it easy. Or so I thought. It's early summer, go to the store grab one of the many pink or purple bikes her size and voila!.... so the night before said celebration I took off without children for the store thanks to a friend volunteered to watch them for an hour!

Patrick met me at the store. We'd need his vehicle for the transport of a big bicycle and I could go back to retrieve kidlets. The store had one pink bike in a small size! I made the inquiry of "Is there a chance there are other bikes not on display here? Could the saleslady look into a purple one of this particular style in a size 26"? Her reply..... "Look up."

The extra bicycles in stock are all hanging from hooks on the ceiling... way, way, up! The supersized store.. had bikes hanging everywhere! I was rather baffled that this was the only method she could offer... Not wanting a kink in my neck, unable to read labels for information from way down on the floor and unsure what to do if I did happen to find a bike that would do the trick... I inquired of another saleslady. This one looked up and then back to me and said... hmmm.... I'll be right back. She was. She brought an electronic device with her. Scanned the barcode of the bike in question and said... "we don't have that in pink or purple... there are however 6 at nearby stores... according to the computers... let's call them and see before you drive everywhere!"

Although we spent nearly 15 minutes on hold with the different stores as they checked to see what was actually in stock, it was 15 minutes well worth it! None of them had a bike in stock even though their computers claimed they did!

While waiting for the phone call confirmations, Patrick played on the wii... we were using the phone in the electronics area and I continued to look for bicycles since each call looked less and less promising. My feet were tired, my body was tired... my hour was up and I needed to retrieve kidlets! This wasn't going simply!

I did see another purple bike in a 26" frame for substantially more money than the one we thought looked cool and fit her description of what she wanted in a new bike. This bike was simple. The kind I would have chosen if the bike had been for me. A comfy seat. Non glaring colour... still a shade of purple... a little old ladyish for a 10 year old girl but a back up if we should need to.

Apparently we needed to. I wasn't sure if it was better to take home a back up bike or tell her the next day that we could go pick out a bike... knowing that 6 stores within reasonable distance already didn't have any other options.... We took home the back up bike. Patrick hid it in the shed and I retrieved kidlets apologizing for taking more than my hour!

The next day was going along fine. It is completely unknown to Sarah that it was her pseudo birthday! Caleb was in on the surprise... he had to be ... when he phoned Daddy to get picked up from scouts and we weren't finished at the bike shopping and he had to walk home, he wanted an explanation! Duncan learned next since he was looking for a frisbee in the shed. He ran into Caleb first fortunately and excitedly kept it quiet for the rest of the day.

It was too much excitement to contain past letting Daddy getting his shoes off after he came home though. So dirty work clothes and all... We served up Sarah's favourite dinner which I actually had ready before 5 pm for a change... Mandarin Chicken Pasta Salad! As we ate, I casually mentioned that since it was such a nice evening, and we've been working so much on the chicken coop and other yardwork, we should take a bike ride tonight to test all the bikes that Miles, Caleb and Grandpa had been servicing! The kids readily agreed. The bikes were already out in the rack and Sarah's conveniently had a flat tire. Everyone was mounting their bikes and she was bummed. We suggested she just get the pump out of the shed and pump it up and not waste time being bummed!

Her reaction to going to the shed for the pump.... Do we have a pump in the shed... In unison we answered.. 'Yes!'...
"Okay, Okay.. I'll get the pump!"
We had a great time trying out the bikes. I however had a difficult time keeping up on foot to take photos, so we went to the school where they could ride in circles and loopdy loops and around the buildings and race each other and on and off the grass and show me tricks.... I was worn out watching! We ended the evening as it was getting dark by putting the bikes away and going for humongous ice cream cones that I couldn't believe they finished! I wonder how her real birthday will compare... This one was so 'simple'.

She hasn't had a day without 'needing' to ride her bike somewhere! Apparently she's thrilled that it's grown up looking and not silly! WHEW!

Forties File Friday -- How did you dress as a child?

It's easier to say what I didn't and still don't tend to wear... I wasn't ever a jeans and a t-shirt person... and runners were for exercising... As a young child I was dressed by others ... often in short dresses... when I picked my own clothes from large bags or boxes of hand me downs... I was a tidy dresser... Enjoyed wearing dresses even when others my age didn't... I wasn't really moved by fads of the day I think... Perhaps a business type dresser... nice and tidy, matching ensembles, fairly fitted clothing in my teen years.... since I could back then I guess!...

As for my stlye now.... when I know what it is I'll let you know...

Others' memories are at the forties file blog click here!

Buppy girl

The pitter patter of little Alyssa feet were here recently. Already two! WOW! She's still the petite little sweet thing even though she's growing up. She is certainly attached to her blanket 'buppy'. Before Valerie returned home, she wanted to wash it. This is of course not something that Alyssa was excited for. Although Duncan and Audrey are the same age and become best buds whenever they are together, Duncan is happily Alyssa's buddy also. The sweetness of the buppy washing moment....

We're so glad we get one more visit as they journey across the U.S. to their new stomping grounds on the east coast! Duncan is most excited that the girls will visit with their Daddy at the same time! This way he says we won't have to change all the computer desktop images to pictures of Sparky, so Alyssa can see Daddy when she is here because she can just go see the real Daddy. However.... Daddy isn't staying for this next visit as long as the girls... so we'll probably be changing the desktop photos again anyway!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALYSSA!

Food, Glorious Food!

The previous two blogs outlined or were a tirade about how important it was that I get to the grocery store and feed the people who live here on a regular basis! I ended the last blog with ... I'm leaving for the store now.....

That small plan was waylaid... As I stood purse in hand and Cooper ready to load into the car, Patrick arrived home. Fine... I was still leaving and now Caleb didn't have to babysit which he didn't really want to do anyway!... Then the doorbell rang. The home teacher had seen Patrick return home and so he came back to visit after all! I was definitely thinking make it snappy... I'm running late as it is!... The kids all slunk away to the downstairs and we sat for a visit. After only a few minutes though the blood curdling screams from downstairs were not ignorable. Investigation revealed that Duncan with Miles help holding his sleeve and then suddenly letting go had punched himself in the nose! Duncan was sure it was broken and Miles had done it on purpose and 'is it bleeding?'. No the nose was fine... he needed to blow his nose but please stop screaming! I noticed that one of my few remaining shirts that I can fit into these days had suffered a tear.. probably while I was chasing chickens... more muttered cursings.....

I decided to get moving anyway. It's not like I was getting anything out of the home teaching visit anyway! So after a 30 minute delay and some more quick good byes... Cooper, Duncan now to appease his sore nose and ego, and I went out into the now pouring rain to get groceries! 7:00pm.

I had planned to stop at the Kitchen Kneads store for a few items, then Sam's Club, then Wal-Mart, pickup Grandma and Sarah, leave Cooper and make a stop at Deseret Book..... Instead, now that Kitchen Kneads was closed and I had 1 hour for Sam's Club, I called Grandma to see what she preferred. We determined there wouldn't be enough time for Sam's club anyway so I'd do the people swap, and just do Walmart and go home.

Torrential rains! At Channa's house the prospect for food wasn't as bleak. She had made some fantastic smelling homemade tacos... even made the tortillas! Hunger was surfacing, so we ate, visited for a few... an hour and then once in the car realized that now at 8:30... we were tired again and still no groceries!!.... and it couldn't be Grandma's fault! We hit the little grocery store by Channa's house for some milk and bananas so we could just go home and we'd go in the morning! Nothing like putting it off some more! But hey...after 8 pm... the donuts are only 25 cents at this store... So we left with milk, bananas and a dozen donuts! Who needs groceries?

Saturday morning was still raining and dismal... Patrick tood all the kids to the church for volleyball and we actually went to the store... We almost got everything on the list! We had a great lunch! The fridge is full the cupboards overflowing and all is right with the world... or at least with the kitchen again.. and that seems to control the world I live in!
I'll try to do the back log of blogs without mentioning food again for a while or going on another tirade!

Mundane tasks!

I've been trying each day to go grocery shopping... a fairly simple task you might think. Well I refuse to shop after 3 pm due to mayhem existing and traffic that I'd like to avoid like the plague. I'm willing to try again after around 7 pm. That is of course if I'm not running some child to some event or still making dinner or too pooped to think of starting a full grocery trip. The ideal time, according to me, is to shop anytime between 7 am and 10 am on a weekday morning but with school needing to be a primary focus that time is unfortunately unavailable these days.

Running low to empty on everything is not a fun thing when tummies begin to growl. We thought life would be grand since Patrick was in town all this week... In town has a new meaning. We now say... Daddy will be gracing the house some time before bed each night and if we're lucky and he's not too tired, stiff or dirty we might be able to do something with him around... like convince him that the chicken run is a pain in the.. hmmm... and needs immediate repair because we dislike chasing and corralling chickens morning and evening! Another thing that we might get a chance to do with Daddy being "in town", is work on the bikes that each need just a little something to make them ready for rolling this year. So each evening... a chain is oiled, a tire patched or replaced before dark!... yes we should have built a garage!

Needless to say the week started with a need for groceries on Monday and here it is Friday evening and we've never made it to the store! Daddy graciously stopped for milk one night on the way home from work and for some fruit last night... but not the big grocery list that needs to be done!

Determined to go today no matter what! I used to just do the midnight shop alone... but now I just can't stay awake that late, let alone go out and be productive! I thought about getting up and out before 6 am this morning... but forgot to wake up until 7:15 and my history students arrived at 7:20. I taught history in my p.j.'s and bathrobe.

Showered finally at noon and munched on bagels from the freezer for lunch with water... long out of milk again!

The kids were finally done with all their schoolwork by 2:30... I could go.. but I'd have to hurry back for Miles to be at scouts by 3:30 and my hair was still in a towel from my shower... hmmm..
The day wasn't looking good for groceries!

Channa came by to get Grandma for Kenzie's soccer match and since Grandma wasn't quite ready to go and stay we decided that Sarah could go watch the game and that I would just have to go shopping this evening and pick up Sarah and Grandma afterwards. A plan I'd have to stick to!

So off they went, Cooper opted to stay and play with Duncan. Grandma's parting words were, "If you are able to have dinner and go grocery shopping while I'm gone then I'll know I'm the problem!"

Determined to have dinner somehow and get the grocery shopping done so it could all be Grandma's problem I headed in to the kitchen. Looking into an empty fridge and bare cupboards with a not caring about food stomach wasn't going too well... Duncan, Cooper and Elowen, whom I'd forgotten I was babysitting for an hour for the neighbour called from my bedroom... "It's spilling!"

I came quickly to discover that they had been returning my palm pilot to the charger when they knocked over the lucky bamboo plant that sits in a vase of water and my underwear drawer was now filling with water!

As I cleaned up the water mess and mopped out my drawer the phone rang. I was late... again... picking up Caleb, Miles and the neighbour from scouts! I had three 5 year olds and only 2 car seats! No one to babysit while I do the three minute drive! Too late to walk. I buckled the two into seats and my own son into a booster not his size and we took off... happened to look in the rear view mirror to see that we'd left the door open!... I ran up the driveway and closed the door. We rushed to pick up the boys. When we arrived the scoutmaster let us know that there wasn't much need for the rush... Miles can't find his shoes. After scouring the building, I found them and he marched to the car barefoot. I returned all the excess children except Cooper and the 4 boys and I went home so I could try again to make dinner and groceries Grandma's problem... now it's 5:00!

It's now raining. The boys were told to play lego downstairs so I could work fast and leave soon. Then I looked out the kitchen window and saw the chickens. We've been trying to put them in the run each day. But now it's raining and they don't have any shelter and once I leave Patrick isn't likely to think of looking for them out there to put them away. So the boys and I ran out in the rain to chase chickens and put them away for the night. In our hurry we forgot about the dog and with the chickens loose and the dog feeling it her job to herd them we had quite a time getting the dog back in the house and locked up so we can finish our task of chicken chasing!

Now wet, aching from being in a bent over position, cursing Patrick, and my feet slimy --- don't wish to elaborate!--- the chickens are in their pen for the night and I can tell the doors to the nest boxes aren't closed again!. I walked all the way around to the front yard so I could access the nest boxes and close the doors... not the easy task that Patrick says it is... getting wetter... there are no eggs again today! One of the hens is now out in the front yard so a chase is on to return her when I stumble upon why there aren't any eggs in the boxes. A nest full of eggs in the front flower bed. Some cracked and I don't know how old they are but at least the hens are still laying... just easter egg hunting for the eggs isn't what I bargained for each day... especially in the rain!

I'm back inside at 5:45 now and starting to panic about dinner... the doorbell rings... oh yeah.. the home teachers are coming tonight!

Oh good, one couldn't make it and it's just the other guy and since Patrick isn't home he figures he'll just try again another time! Why am I so relieved?

In the depths of the freezer I find an old bag of fish sticks... don't even remember buying them. So the boys and I each have 4 fish sticks and half a bag of stale frito chips and a few grapes and call it dinner! I'm typing while I eat... I need off my feet.

Ok.. dinner is done... now just do the grocery store and it's still all Grandma.. right? I'm off.. Patrick says he's only a few minutes away now.... So I left Caleb with the boys and we'll see how Cooper and I do with the grocery store and the Grandma, Sarah retrieval!

Random Ramblings

If there were more hours in the day there would be more blogs on my site...

My children are doing things periodically that I'm trying to document... I have a backlog!... and it's growing. Like in the hundreds again!!

There are still about 15 chapters in the Loney Saga to complete and without completing the saga I cannot document some of the other things I'd like because it might spoil some of the saga for some...

There are those who are slowly losing patience with my blogging speed!... Maybe I shouldn't have set the bar so high... I'm one of the impatient ones... Patrick isn't... he quit reading... not sure how I feel about that.

My kids got an extended spring break with endless visitors and excitement and now it's difficult to get back in the groove of school. Especially with the prospect of running into the summer holiday or doing double the workload in May to get back on track!

The weather is beautiful... I don't want to be indoors doing school, cleaning or dare I say it... blogging... I want to work in the yard... however... things seem to be in the way... school, cleaning, blogging, expanding belly with lifting limitations, daylight hours, darn ethics of priorities!

May is definitely my favourite month of the whole year... I'd love to expand on that but .... there isn't time.

I don't find that I grab my camera enough when there is a lot going on and always look back and regret not snapping the moments... my memory is definitely not good enough to remember the details without the photo to help prompt me. Fortunately some visitors are kind enough to share or I might have a large void in the month of April 2009 where photos should be!

We're trying to come up with an acceptable activity to persuade the little boys that Daddy leaving for the month of June without weekend returns like we've become accustomed to won't be so bad... even if he will miss the father son campout and Sarah's birthday... Trying to decide if we pretend that each day in May is also the same day in June and celebrate the occasions he'll miss in May as though it were June..... or do we just do it all at once in a weekend of celebration? ahhh.... the woes of a daddy working out of town too much!

Distance, Time and Money are my enemies... in that order I think... maybe.. or maybe it's housework and food.... oh tight race there..

The chickens are delightful and work inducing right now... Wish the project list wasn't so long and demanding and no time to get to it!

Mum visit is coming to an end... with all the insanity mixed in, it barely seems like she's been here at all, and now she's leaving...

Sleep comes much easier now.... I don't toss and turn anymore... (sigh of relief)... although I'm still tired in the morning... I think I could nap 2 or 3 times a day... but I'm not giving in to that nonsense!

Worse than sleep now... I don't want to cook... I'd be happy to eat raw fruits and veggies and never cook again... except when I really want to eat something tasty and then I can't quite put my finger on what I'm craving.... What happened to everything being normal and just craving some ice cream!??

This wasn't what I sat down to write..... It's far more negative than I thought it would be.
I was just going to make a list of things I didn't want to forget to write about... like a pie eating contest, and a hand slapping game, and whistling, and snapping, and lush green things growing, and yummy salads, and visitors and outings, and trips, and aha moments and thoughts and dreams and names... ugh.. names.... no more negatives... singing time, rats and mice and doggie doors, May, books, summer fun, teenage activities, bells palsy, clothesline updates and other much more pleasant thoughts!...

but now it's lunch and people require food.... see what I mean about food being evil...
