Photographic Follies

I was a bit snap happy with the camera.  Lots of reasons.  First, we don't see Paige and kids much and I was sorely lacking in photos of them.  Second, Paige is the reason my blog gets as many hits each day as it does and apparently it isn't a real blog without a photo so I knew I had to have photos of anything I wanted to blog.  Third, I've been reading a lot of photography books and webs to try to improve the photo taking.  (So far I've learned to get closer to my subject and to not use the flash all the time.  It hasn't been simple.  I'm often zoomed in when the action requires a wider angle and as for the no flash... that's a technique that is going to require a lot more practice!)  And lastly, I have a bad habit of snapping a lot of photos.... or none at all and they managed to arrive during a period of snap happy time!

I tried in the five days that they were here to get a group photo.  I wasn't very successful.  Not for lack of trying though.  These are the most infuriating four photographic subjects.  They don't like their photos taken and they were incredibly kind to indulge me with the photos that I did get... well some of them were!

There was one that was near impossible.  But I'm a smart cookie!  I'll just piece all the parts of her that I captured together to get a Paige collage! HA HA!

As for a family photo?  Daddy Carlos was not with them and the closest I managed was to include the petting zoo van with it's 'sleeping bag hidden driver' in a group shot!

I did catch all but Whittaker in a cousin photo.  (Whittaker was asleep, and I wasn't waking him, even for a photo op!)

Some things last forever

Many moons ago, Paige made this quilt.  I also made one.  Her's has been used... used.. used... and it's still going strong.  I gave it a good wash but it's not even showing any signs of wearing out soon.  Mine has had a few repairs and rarely leaves the guest bed where it lays.  I think her sturdy fabric choices may have had something to do with it... My flimsy ones just don't cut it!

No kids allowed

With so many teenagers at our disposal to babysit we sneaked away for a grown up luncheon with Jim and Lorrie.

We were headed to a great all you can eat Chinese buffet.  Definitely a place NOT to take 5 teen and pre-teens.  They would be licking the platters clean and embarrassing us for sure!  No, it was much better to leave them home with the instructions to eat all the leftovers they'd like!

Bowl-a-rama

Kids bowl free all summer long.  Paige and her kids have been bowling a lot.  We just began.  We got some great deals on some old bowling shoes so we don't even have to rent them... a truly free activity now!

Aren't we stylin'?

We arrived early one morning and had to wait for them to open a lane up for us.  We checked out the arcade... without any coins among us.  Who needs coins?
Once we began to bowl... the game was on!   I was a difficult contender to beat.  I took it easy on them and only bowled an 87 the first day.  I let Tree win with a 113.  After three days of bowling, I knew they couldn't handle it if I trounced them each time... so I let them each take a turn winning.  I'm sure my confidence building techniques are what helped everyone to improve their game!
A  quick bowling tutorial
The object of the game is to knock down the ten pins.  In one roll it's a strike, in two rolls it's a spare.  Get lots of either of those and you'll win the game.

How to bowl a Nova
The term 'bowl a Nova' is a relatively new bowling term.  It's when you 'purposely' leave just one pin standing after your two rolls are through.

Technique is very important.  Don't worry... I've included a video at my own expense for teaching purposes.

Yes the dance is an integral part of the technique.  Without it, you could accidentally get a spare or even worse... a strike!

Children everywhere are in awe of the new technique!

Except some children who have been lured into a false belief that spinning the balls on the rack when it isn't their turn is more exciting than observing master bowlers for the purpose of improving technique.

 The adventures of Tuesday!!

Games.  Games.  Games.  Monolpoly, Wii, Family Feud, Apples to Apples, Tetris competitions and more!

Whittaker has a new best friend.

We headed to the park for a picnic lunch.  After we ate, some thought they'd try rolling down the hill.
Some needed a lot more encouraging to roll down the hill.
Some roll down the hill in style!
We're a crowd.  I love that although it's years sometimes between visits, they can pick up and hang out like they're best buds who see each other every day.  They get along..... most of the time... I mean they are kids after all.

Next we went swimming.  Fun in the Sun.  Whittaker loved splishing and splashing for over an hour and then we decided we had planned our swimming outing without sunscreen so we tucked him away inside the stroller.  The rest of us fried!

Miles had one private swimming lesson this summer.  Now he has extreme confidence!  He loves that he can swim with his head under the water now.  I think a little form work is still needed.

The big kids were too cool to stay in the kiddie pool for long so they took off to do tricks in the big pool!

The big kids had fun diving.  Sarah suddenly became a big kid.... tough for Mummy but cool for her.  She even attempted diving off the high dive!

We ended the day with Caleb's birthday dinner of Macaroni and Cheese, Greek Salad and chocolate cake with ice cream! Who needs to throw a party when you live with one?!!
Some of the faces of our fun day!  (Someone must have grabbed my camera in order for me to be in this!)

Surprise!

While Caleb and Sarah were having a fun filled week visiting the Ranch, we at home were cooking up a few surprises for them here at home!

We were working fast and furious to finish them in time.  Sometimes the thought simply must be what counts.  There are only so many hours in the day.  Fortunately, surprised they certainly were!

Since we moved into our new house three years ago, we've needed to replace the bedroom windows for the kids.  They've had windows, but they were old metal framed windows that didn't slide well, didn't lock at all and didn't completely close.  In other words they were drafty which meant, cold in the winter came right on in!

So surprise number 1, new bedroom windows.

Another thing that has been anticipated since we moved into our home was for Sarah's bedroom to be painted.  I had painted her bedroom about six months before we sold the old house and she has wished for her new room to be painted in the same manner ever since.

So surprise number 2, I painted her bedroom... well... I got 75% finished with painting her bedroom.  But I think the surprise element was at least still there.

Surprise number 3.  We've been finding that the family room seating situation was lacking.  Even when it is only ourselves we're squished together on the couch.  The potato and kiwi (large beanbags) aren't holding up and instead of seating six each as they were advertised to do, we're finding they're a one man or a two snuggling couple seat.  So, new seating was acquired to accommodate more in the family room.  I had toyed with the idea of banana chairs but I don't have a lot of space and I don't like the fights that inevitably happen with chairs that rock back and forth in a small space with lots of children.

I happened to be at IKEA and saw the solution.  They were even on sale!  So we have 'beary' fun seating now!  They have been comfortable, convenient and stack away nicely.  Besides they're way cute!  Sarah immediately added a pink bow.
I think they understood, 'poseable' differently.  I have found them dancing and wrestling.

Surprise number 4.  This one required a little more patience since it wasn't immediately known when they returned home.  It also was a test in surprise keeping for two young boys.  They did well.  As excited as they were to tell they kept it a surprise.  As Caleb and Sarah were traveling home from their week in Wyoming, Paige and her crew were inching along through the mountains of Colorado on their way for an impromptu visit.

Paige was learning that road trips were not her idea of a good time.  She was extremely curious why anyone would live in high mountainous areas far from civilization.  She was wondering if the mountain pass would ever let her out into flat, non-winding roads ever again.  She was wondering if there was a place she could stop for some rest.  Just west of Grand Junction into the border of Utah, she found flat, straight roads, a place to stop and sleep, but no answer as to why people choose to live in high mountainous areas.

Just before breakfast the following morning, they arrived!  Surprise was indeed the reaction!  Paige is still looking for an alternate method of returning home... either by teletransport, floo powder, apparition (but the kids aren't old enough to use that), or in the form of an additional driver!

Surprise number 5 was on me!  One shouldn't be surprised by anything when Paige is around.  In addition Paige and her crew were some new fancy chickens.  One for each child and a few spares.  As always she is prepared with entertainment and gifts for all.  Two boxes of shoes, clothes, toys, games and activities for all.
I had swept seconds before.... they went outside within minutes... apparently I'm no fun at all!

I believe the next few days will hold a few more surprises for us all.  Let the adventure begin!!

Adventures must be contagious

After reading the travel log of our trip to Oregon, I must have made it sound so wonderful that it inspired Paige and the kids to pack up and take a road trip of their own!

They did just that.  They packed up their things and headed north.. and west.  I've been getting updates from them.  They didn't start with an exact plan... or map and they're continuing in the same manner.   She rarely knows what towns she is in, has passed or is headed toward.... she says she's just waiting until the voice in the GPS tells her to do something else.   I on the other hand have mapquest pulled up on the screen and as I chat with them on the phone try to figure out the route they are traveling.  It isn't exactly a common route.  I'm sure it's a scenic one though.

Paige hasn't ever driven a road trip before.... and from the sounds of things... this may the last!  I can't tell you how many times she's considered turning around and heading home since it would still be a shorter drive!

As of now... they've driven out of TX, into OK... up into KS and then west to CO... currently they are midway across CO.  They're glad to be passed all the miles and miles of fields and slaughter yards.  The red rocks are a nice new change of scenery.

I've heard fun chatter in the background so I think they're having a good time... and I've overheard a few mentions of a photo op, so perhaps we'll get to see some photos soon?!

Ain't nothing like the real thing baby!

Once you've been to the best... everything else pales in comparison!  The renaissance fair 'Scarborough' in TX is all we had ever experienced.  We had really experienced it too.  We had lived the life for three FULL days in 2008.  Paige had dressed us in time period clothing, we had worked in the petting zoo and in three days been unable to take in every show or event.  It is that big an event with so much to do and see.  We have known that we would have to go back.  The kids have begged to go back!  We came very close to going this year.  The plans were in motion and we were beginning to make arrangements to have a fun filled vacation beginning of course with a stop for a three day weekend once again at the Scarborough faire... or as the little boys call it... Paige's fair!  However... life sometimes doesn't go according to plan and so the plans are only postponed... we will be going, just not this year.

So to make it up to the kids, I decided we could attend the Utah Renaissance faire.  It was only an hours drive and there was a student entrance fee on Friday that was certainly reasonable.  So off we went.  We assumed it would be a smaller version, it only lasted two weekends compared to the nine of Scarborough.  The weather was vastly different.  In TX it had been over 100 degrees all three days!  It was much below 100 today.  Try 65 with a chance of rain.

We parked in the mud.  Walked along a very bumpy road to the ticket booth.  I was keenly aware of the bumpy road because I was attempting to push the stroller.  Thankfully Caleb helped carry the stroller over some rocky sections and one very mucky one.  We entered the fair and I was thankful I had had the forethought to take them to Subway before arriving.  The smells of all the food vendors weren't as tempting on a full stomach.  Their prices weren't tempting either way!  I had given the kids each $5.00 to spend as they liked.  I admonished them to spend it wisely.

At the ticket booth they gave us a program.  The joust would be in 20 minutes.  I had three very excited boys!  Sarah... not so much.. til she remembered it would involve horses.  So off to the jousting arena.  We were waylaid a few times on our way.  First by this fellow.... the ultimate sales man.

He saw two little boys and his eyes as I'm sure you can see were $.  He was charming, and had a well rehearsed spiel that must work with all the little boys.  Ok.. so he also had this Scottish accent, so their mother was entranced a little bit too... He flattered the boys, he measured them and found them worthy young squires in need of some knight training.  He offered tips to good knightly chivalry, handshaking befitting of a knight.  He had them kneel before him on a velvet pillow while they took an oath to be knights in training.  They were in heaven with all this knight talk.  Then he went in for the kill....

"What you've no sword or shield.  What kind of knight can you be without armor lads?"
They began to protest that they did have swords, shields and armor to boot, but they had left it at home.

"A knight does not go anywhere without his armor!  It's ok.  Today, here most importantly, a knight must have his protection."

Catch on yet?  He sells swords and shields.
I couldn't convince them that this wasn't the way to spend their money.  They both had a sword post haste.  And to top it off he let them paint it themselves... (great... armed and dangerous and wet paint to start out our adventure!)

After the swords, we continued to make our way to the jousting area.  We were waylaid once again by this fellow and his merry jenga game.  He challenged all to a game him against everyone.   It looked harmless, Sarah took a turn.  He immediately called her a sissy for taking a loose center piece.  He whipped a piece from the bottom with obvious skill!  Then Miles attempted a piece very carefully.  Then again he whipped a piece from the bottom.  When he moved his piece another became obviously loose.  Sarah quickly seized the chance to take that piece.  He was a merry fellow and a crowd was gathering.

"Behold... Lady Sarah........ who cheats for all to see!  There is no challenge in taking the loose piece.  Yet she took it... the actions of a cheater I tell you!"

Sarah was grinning from ear to ear and beet red.  He took another swipe at a piece and then announced to the crowd...

"Do not cheer for Lady Sarah, cheater of Jenga.  It will only encourage her.  Come Lady Sarah, it is your chance to redeem yourself."

Sarah took a piece very slowly.  All the while he was taunting her with comments of cheating and slothful behaviour for her slowness.

He again took a piece so swiftly that we almost didn't see it happen.  Caleb, and Miles took another turn.  They must not have cheated or he was having too much fun at Sarah's expense because not much was said until Sarah took another turn.  Again he admonished the ever growing crowd to not cheer or encourage this known cheater.  They should instead escort her to the gallows for a time of penance was what was needed!

Another from the crowd attempted a turn and the tower fell.... the amateur!

It had been fun...  He shook Sarah's hand and privately told her she had been a formidable opponent but not to let word of his kindness spread... he had a reputation to uphold!
The kids of course now want a giant jenga game to practice... he was very swift with his moves.

Off again toward the joust.
The stop directly before the joust was the petting zoo.  We felt compelled to check it out.  We had the most experience with this.  Sorely inadequate.  No supervision.  Animals were either tethered or caged.  There wasn't shade or shelter from the elements.  Rules were non existent to say nothing of being posted.  Hanf sanitizer was a bring your own policy.  There was at least no charge.

Finally, the joust!!

It was the main event... the big attraction... Everyone was there....  It wasn't all that large a crowd.  The kids had front row standing spots and Caleb and i stood back a few feet with the stroller.  The joust lasted longer than usual as they explained the events and bantered as knights typically do.  Then they began the events... first a javelin throw at the target.  Then a heckler from the audience was brought forward to be punished.  A helmet was placed on his head.  A cantaloupe was set atop.  Then the knights rode at him with sword in hand and sliced the melon in half.

Now for the actual jousting.  Something happened to one of the knights steeds and a replacement horse was needed.  The crowd was entertained while the knight in all his armor dismounted from the horse and had to stand while he waited for the new steed.  The new steed was a spirited one.  This was the first jousting in front of a crowd for this horse and so we were entertained with a few training runs.  They proceeded to do some measuring passes and lance breaking runs to prepare the horse for the real thing.   The jousting itself only lasted perhaps ten minutes.  We had been entertained.  The joust is a fun event.  Afterwards the knights were available to pose for photographs and sign autographs.

The knight we stood in line for photos with was the national jousting champion two years running.  He had been jousting on behalf of Scotland today, so we had cheered him on.
(more to come in a separate post about the armor and the boys!)

While we waited for our turn for a photo with Sir Kilney, Sarah had discovered something that she found even more entertaining.  She watched in awe at the gymnastics on horseback routine.  She was sad she hadn't been chosen as a volunteer to try it.

The joust was over.  We had taken photos with the Knight.  We had walked the entire fair.  The kids determined that they were done.  We could go.  We had been there for a total of 90 minutes!

We made our way back toward the entrance.  We stopped for a looky loo at a few merchants and their overpriced renaissance wares.  There were lovely costume shops, and many food booths.  The site for the fair was muddy thanks to all the recent rains and the booths were all makeshift tents.  The sky was beginning to look ominous and without anywhere to seek refuge from the rain we decided to quit lolligagging and be on our way.

We were almost at the exit again and that meant that we were near our swords and shields salesman again.  We did take a moment for a necessary photo op of the kids with their heads in the pillory (often misnamed the stocks... it was misnamed here at the Utah fair)  Our salesman came by and tormented Caleb in the appropriate Renaissance fashion and wouldn't release him without some sort of payment.

After singing Twinkle, twinkle for the crowd, he was released!

Yes Whittaker was with us.   He never left the stroller.  He was content to take in the sights and smells.  He handled a sword at one point since Sarah felt sorry for him.  He really didn't figure too prominently in our fair day until we realized it had been 3 hours since he had eaten and that he hadn't napped and we still had an hours drive ahead of us.  With the approaching rain storm we hightailed it for the van, with a quick stop at the porta potties.

All in all... a fun afternoon... but it was agreed.. we've been spoiled and they would all rather go to Paige's fair.  Even if they have to work to earn their keep and it is over 100 degrees.

P.S.  The swords were cheaply made... Duncan's broke in half and Miles cracked within a few minutes of returning home.  They were thrilled to retrieve their old trusty swords and shields that have withstood the last two years worth of sparring!

A Mother's angst

Cleaning and scrubbing,
can wait 'til tomorrow.
For babies grow up,
we've learned to our sorrow...

So quiet down cobwebs,
dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby,
and babies don't keep.

April Showers

April Showers are supposed to bring May flowers.

One thinks of showers as light rains watering the soil and urging spring to come. One does not envision inches of snow to wake to and gloomy skies. It makes one wish they could stay in bed under the cozy covers.

But one must get up and go on. One must see how the handiwork of the night before is playing out. One decided to play pranks at a very late hour and has a difficult time stifling her laughter.

April.... in like a lion and out like a lamb... is that the other saying for April? I think so. I guess this is the lion roaring it's way in. Snowstorms, sick kids, late nights, sick grandma, no groceries, dirty dishes, Dr. appt.'s, and late blogs.

late blogs... a phenomenon really... a few years ago I wasn't plagued with the concern of a late blog and now I feel overwhelmed by the backlog of blogs.

Of an ever growing backlog of blogs.

April has birthdays.

April 1st has birthdays!

*Paige, the quintessential fool... she spent the day with Christ... well... in a reenactment of Christ's crucifixion. She provided the llama's.
*Ava, I will meet this niece! I will meet this niece! I will meet this niece!

April has other birthdays!

*Clairee, soon to be big sister Clairee. Sarah can't get enough of Clairee. Two years... too fast!

*Sparky, what could be next? go to byu, check. serve mission, check. get married, check. have two adorable girls, check. finally finish the Phd, check. Get a big wig job back east, check... we'll just sit here and wait with baited breath for what 'cream cheese' will do next!

*Rob, I'm definitely going to have to hound Patrick for not keeping in touch better with his side of the family. I seem to have my finger in every one's business on my side of the family and can write all sorts of drivel about them... even if I'm making it up.. but not quite as easy on the Noble side. Rob fill us in on the details of life in the mid-west.

Easter is coming faster than the speed of a thousand blogs that's for sure!

Lot's to do... no time to do it!

More Easter chicks

As Paige continued to acquire more Easter chicks, she was again on the phone with me via the wireless blue tooth.

There are times I hear comments and I know she isn't speaking to me anymore, so I wait until I have her attention or I hang up on her for her obvious rudeness at ignoring me the voice in her ear in favor of the human in front of her. (It's ok... she just calls back... or hangs up on me for being slow witted and boring! We roll with the hang up thing.)

However sometimes I'm so taken aback by the comment that I hear I must question what she says.... such was this one..

I believe she was conversing with someone with small children... she had some of her newly acquired chicks with her.
"You can only squeeze them until their eyes pop out once..."

She runs petting zoos for a living??? And this is her new motto?? or was it a warning???

Easter Chicks

Each year as Easter time approaches, Paige begins to acquire her Easter chicks. This year was no exception. However this year, Texas has been a little more chilly than normal. The heat lamp was on for the baby chicks and she was ready for all the Easter petting zoos to begin. Until yesterday morning when she discovered a dog had been cold and booted the chicks out from under the lamp.... the chicks, the many dozen chicks.... did not survive the night

Paige has been out acquiring more chicks today... not the variety that she had before but the quantitiy.

She acquired a few of the chicks while out running errand with a friend and her toddler. In an effort to keep the toddler happy she hander her a chick.

1 little chick = 1 happy toddler in the back seat!

At the end of their errand running as Paige dropped them off, she tucked the little chick into the hands of the toddler and then took off....

I'm sure the toddler was thrilled and the mother... not so much!

Paige passes through

Paige knows everyone in her town.

Thanks to her bluetooth ear piece for her phone, I'm often privy to little conversations that occur with random people she runs into while she is out and about running errands.

Today while shopping at the grocery store she was threatened by someone that they'll come knocking on her door at 5am, because she didn't bring her llama to the store for them to see.

I rarely run into anyone I know when out and about, and no one has accosted me for not running errands with my chickens.....

This really takes the cake

Paige does not bake. This did not stop her from letting her friend bake a cake on her behalf though. Tree needed a cake to decorate for the Scouting, 100th birthday celebration. So, the day of the event they called me from the store with questions on how to decorate a scout cake.

Uhhhhh...

Just throw something decorative on the cake.. it's just going to be eaten. If you want it theme like, they wear blue and yellow. Or there's always the fleur de-lis symbol. And they're always doing survival type stuff and camping. Just put a rope in a knot and call it good. But then the conversation continued to escalate as they were picking up more items.

This is what they came up with for the first prize winning cake!!

She just calls me to make me feel needed.... I can see they don't really need my help!

Go Dog Go.

I've been busy lately.... so my sister will be all furnishing blogs while I'm unavailable...

Here's a sampling of what you could see with her behind the wheel of my blog!

Her neighbour was out of town. She noticed that the neighbours dog was not being fed and cared for. He came over and parked himself in her horse trailer. She wasn't able to convince the dog to leave the trailer and had to run errands. So the dog went for a ride. However while miles from home the dog escaped. Now for days she has attempted to track down the neighbours dog from various shelters, while trying to decide what to do when the neighbour returns.

Eggcellent!

What came first the chicken or the egg?

Miles has always been an early riser. I used to be. Perhaps I shall be again... but not currently. Miles is easily up 2 or 3 hours before the rest of us. As such he is eager for breakfast when we finally rise. This was brought to my attention by my sister over a thousand miles away. How did she know?

Miles had been having chats with Paige on the phone at this early hour. If no one in this time zone was going to wake up and chat with him he resorted to finding a time zone that would. He apparently was reading cookbooks to her over the phone. He was both hungry and in love with the idea of being able to cook by himself. Naturally she introduced him to cooking an egg in the microwave so he could make his own breakfast!

I went along with the idea. I watched him make one to be sure I wouldn't be woken to a disaster and gave the go ahead to make one if he were starving in the mornings. This little idea has grown. Everyone wanted in on the action.

Miles decided to offer a cooking class. Of course!

Cooper was SO 'EGG'CITED!! Cooper LOVES eggs. I mean, would eat them three times a day every day if he could... and likely has at times when Channa couldn't get him to eat anything else! He is alive today thanks to eggs... through his pickiest eating times we could always count on him to eat an egg! To top this off, Cooper has recently decided like Miles to be a chef when he grows up! Perhaps they'll open a restaurant together... who knows?

Duncan, Derek and Sarah also attended the class but once they made their egg sandwich and ate they were content. Cooper and Miles stuck through it til the end. They also have had refresher courses together and have attempted a few additions to improve the egg 'EGG'sperience....
Thankfully Sarah was available to photograph the tutorial through each step!

Here's the run down on the class schedule
Oh... and apparently when cooking you must use your cooking voice! (where could they possibly have picked up that idea??? (I'm looking away innocently!!))

The Ingredients,

Cracking the eggs, (everyone enjoyed becoming master egg crackers),

Um... I don't like to be sticky... clean up on aisle.. oh just CLEAN UP!!,

Lots of stirring necessary... yeah!,

Dash of salt and pepper,

While it is cooking, practice your cooking show accent with lots of gestures!,

It can be 'egg'sausting, quick drink to refresh and we continue,

If all goes well the egg should slide out onto the waiting bread, sometimes a knife can loosen the sides if needed,

Add condiments as desired,

Top with another slice of bread and enjoy!
Voila, Le Sandwich d'oeuf!
