Knock em down!

Bowling to beat the heat.

I eat flies.

Whittakers shirt has a frog and the words, "I eat flies."

Apparently, the flies were not intimidated.

We built what I call the shoo fly napping tent in the back room at the petting zoo at the Scarborough faire.

He slept soundly.

Impressing the girls already

Duncan is fairly quiet around here.  He saunters in sometimes and asks me a question he's been pondering for a while and sometimes he makes an observation that he'd like to share.  Other times he shocks me silly.  We've been enchanted by the latest Disney flick, "Tangled".  The boys have been quoting it and singing the songs.

This is the special tidbit he shared with me today.
"Look, I'm getting those cables in my neck that hold up your head when you get a heavy brain.  And," he added excitedly, "I'm finally getting a goiter like you think is so handsome on daddy!"

He was pointing to his not really there, adam's apple.  I had pointed out recently that I liked that daddy had a cleft chin (dimple was what I think I said!).  No idea how he twisted that all around..  The goiter reference definitely came from the movie, Tangled.

Don't worry Duncan, I'm sure the girls will all flock to you once you announce your arriving goiter!

Within an hour of my discussion with Duncan I had Miles trying on a suit coat.  It was a tad big still.  Kenzie came in as he was wearing it and I had to go into the hall to squelch my laughter.

"Kenzie, feel the shoulder pads.  It's what makes men look buff to impress all the girls.  This jacket has great big ones.  That's the real reason girl's like guys all dressed up.   They look like they're strong enough to protect them."

Sorry ladies... I'm failing miserably here at raising gentlemen with lady skills.

Actually, speaking of skills with the ladies.... Caleb will be upset but....  I picked him and his friend up from the dance the other night and I asked all the nosy questions as we drove home.  How was the dance, did you ask any new girls, did you talk to them while you danced.  I asked both Caleb and his friend.  Caleb was succinct in his answers.  fine, yup, yup.  His friend on the other hand was more than willing to share his experiences.  The dance was fun, I'm kinda a ladies man so I'm always dancing with the girls.  But then I know a bunch more girls than Caleb does, and it doesn't hurt that I'm a jock.  (remind me to have Cooper meet Caleb's friend!)  What really surprised me was that Caleb agreed.  He's a total ladies man, and he has a six pack.  They love that.

That's it... we start gentlemen training tomorrow.  I have big myths to dispel!

1. Girls are attracted to goiters!
2. Girls are impressed by shoulder pads for security purposes!
3. Girls like you for your abs and your pick up lines....  (hmm... those don't hurt, but, not the focus I want here!)

Words that define us

Over lunch, the subject of name calling came up.  Cooper wanted to have certain 'terms' defined so he could know if they were good name calling or bad name calling words.  His 'terms' in question were, nerd, geek, and jock.

Don't you just love lunchtime conversations with Cooper.  He keeps things lively.

We said that words were interesting.  They sometimes mean one thing but are used in a way to mean another.
Take nerd, it is defined as,

an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit.

And geek, is defined as,
a computer expert or enthusiast

I explained to him that nerd meant he was really smart at something.  Geek meant almost the same thing but it really applied to computers or  math things.

"OH, So being a nerd is a good thing",  he said.  "Cause I'm a wii nerd."  And I'm a computer geek too!  What about jock ?"

A jock is defined as,
an athlete, someone who does well in sports.

"Oh, I'm not really a jock yet then."

I thought he had a fairly healthy picture of himself.  I hated to burst his bubble with the other way of using the terms.  So I told him that some people who aren't great at one of those things will make fun of the other people by using those words because really deep down they are jealous.

By now we had finished our lunch and the kids were clearing their dishes.  They had all commented on the terms coming up with good ways to describe them selves.  Sarah declared herself a horse and dog nerd.  Miles said he was a scouting nerd.  Caleb came to lunch late and said he was just a bum.  Derek had been listening intently and was climbing down from the stool and proclaimed,

"and I'm just a weiner and a jerk!"

He had no idea why we were all laughing so much.  Even Cooper caught the funny and laughed.  In fact he repeated the phrase all afternoon, just to remind us how funny it had been.

I think Derek has  himself pinned correctly though.  He is a wii nerd, and he's shaping up to be a jock, he's got some crazy soccer skills that one!

It's 6 am. What are you doing?

Every so often, we have to take Caleb to seminary as well as pick him up.  On such days, we are actually excited.  There is an unused classroom in the building with a ping pong table,
a foosball table,
and one of those way cool, non electric vacuum cleaners.  What is it about those little vacuums that is so alluring to kids!?  I don't know of any children arguing to use the vacuum at home, but get near one of these suckers and they're all fighting for a turn.

Not pictured, the super comfy couch that I fell into with my new book.  (reading The Chosen by Chaim Potok)  It's not too bad a way to spend an hour in the morning... we tried the wait in the car and try to get some sleep method, and the drop him off, go back home and start the chores, breakfast routine and rush back to pick him up method also.  By far this is the requested method!

Got it all together...

Yesterday we had a discussion/lesson at church about how we as women are too judgemental of our selves.  We tend to assume that everyone else has their act together and can do it all and we are the only ones that are falling short.  So.. today I write so to prove that I am not one who has it 'all together'.  Lest anyone incorrectly assumes that I do.

In fact a number of years ago in a previous neighbourhood, I was actually told by a lady that she just could tell that my mother and I had it all together and were so organized.  My mother and I looked at each other and laughed ourselves silly!  No matter what we said or did we could not convince this deluded woman otherwise.  (we referred to this woman as 'the put together woman' with a bit of a snicker after that)  Proof that as women, we just don't have a clue what reality really is for each other.

Back to proving that I'm years later, just as much a mess as always!  This morning I awoke to Whittaker's persistent, "up, up, up!"  It was only 5:46 am.  We weren't scheduled to wake for another 30 minutes.  That on top of my staying up until 1 am watching a chick flick with Patrick the night before didn't begin the day well.  I pulled Whittaker into bed with me and offered him a bottle (two things we just don't do in the morning.  Normally it's a banana for him and a potty for me.)  But this morning he went for it... and so did I.  We both promptly fell asleep.  The back up alarm was sweetly silenced by two little boys who thought they'd continue the mother's day treatment and let me sleep in a bit... (especially since they could get away with a little more computer game time undiscovered)  Unfortunately, when I opened my eyes again, the clock showed 7:12 am.  AHHHH!  I flew out of bed yelling... "Go, Go, Go!  We have to be at the seminary building in 8 minutes!"  The kids ran as they were to the van, I grabbed my closest clothes and dressed on my way down the hall.  However, I was bra-less, and had open toed sandals.

It was pouring rain.  I almost hit the garbage can as I backed out of the driveway.  We barely made it to the seminary in time.  It's a good thing we have a carpool, I'd have texted Caleb that we'd get there when we get there if it was just him.  After carpool drop offs, we returned home.  We had 45 minutes until Piano lessons.  I showered, and barked orders from the bathroom.  We snarfed our breakfast and ran out the door again.

Sarah forgot a piano book, my lesson ran late, I came home to switch bags so I could go to a meeting and lost the keys in the process, took Sarah the wrong book, arrived late for my meeting.  After the meeting, I came home to find the kids all waiting with smiles on their faces.  They concocted a plan.  On mother's day they had surprised me with a batch of cookie dough for a treat while we watched a movie.  I said, "after today, I'm banning all sweets until I lose 10 pounds!!"  They took me seriously and had a training schedule all worked out for me with training guards assigned to each day!  But I only had 45 minutes to make and eat lunch and get out the door again with Whittaker.  He had given me a nasty, goopy, draining ear to worry about for Mother's day and I had called to make an appointment to find out what was up?  Duncan had me doing wii fit step aeorbics for 20 minutes and then running up and down the stairs 5 times.   I snarfed lunch, and then ran out the door again.

Whittaker's diagnosis is an ear infection, his tubes are still in tact and it is draining because of the tubes.  We now have drops for his ears twice a day... yippee!  I must have looked a sight.  Sitting in the waiting room after taking three flights of stairs thanks to an out of service elevator, I was out of breath and I noticed for the first time that, Whittaker was still wearing his bib from lunch with beans, and snot all over it, he didn't have shoes on, and his shirt was much too big for him.  I was still wearing my open toed sandals, (my feet were now soaked thanks to all the rain), and I still hadn't even brushed my hair since I got out of the shower this morning.  I sat watching 'Finding Nemo', a little too intently and the nurse had to come over to me and tap me on the shoulder to ask if I was Whittaker's mother.  I hadn't heard her call his name.

By the time the appointment was over, I did not feel like going to the pharmacy to pick up the prescription, instead I decided to let Patrick do it after his long day... I just wanted to go home and start the day over, or at least brush my hair.  Besides, Caleb texted that the boys had been dropped off while I was gone and Derek was complaining of an upset tummy and Cooper mentioned that he'd been having a case of the runs all morning.  (All I could think was... "What did I do to deserve this?")  Whittaker went down for a nap instantly after we came home and I sat down intending to relax.  The phone alarm rang.  Today was Duncan's Tiger of the month day at scouts.  Good thing I'd set an alarm for it, 6 weeks ago!  It was 2:30 in the afternoon.  We wrote up a little 'all about Duncan' essay and looked for some photos.  After an hour of enjoying looking through Duncan pics, we decided to just take the lap top to scouts and let them watch the slideshow of photos instead of rushing to have the photos printed up at walmart and then putting together a poster for the evening.  Now all we had to do was whip up a treat to share.  Duncan begged for cinnamon rolls.  If we hurried, we could squeeze it in.

They didn't exactly rise as they should have, and without the speed bake feature on the over they never would have been ready in time.  For the third time today, we snarfed a meal down so we could run out the door.  We were barely on time for scouts and only because the cubmasters' son was sick and the other leaders were running a few minutes behind.  whew!

So, what's really sad, isn't what a nutty life it was today, but rather that this isn't all that crazy for me.  So for any out there who think I might have my act together... Take it back, think again, turn around and run for your life... you're wrong!, what gave you that impression?!!

What's even better is that as I sat down to type up this little blog... I found my head bobbing in my half asleep state, so, I just went to bed... I left all the dishes and cleaning for the next morning.  And I decided to send the blog out the next day so I could read it over to be certain it was coherent! Then I forgot all about it until late in the day!  So the nuttiness continues!
