I really get into winter sports.

Winter seems to be a busy time around here....  really ought to rethink the activities to coincide with better temperatures.  Regardless, after a long day in Jackson Hole freezing with the Elk, we woke up early the next day and bundled up again.  This time we headed into town to watch skijoring.

Skijoring is when you bundle up in multiple layers and carry big blankets and a hot beverage in a thermos so that you can sit on frozen metal bleachers near porta potties for roughly six hours and every 8 or 9 minutes face the race track in front of you and yell out 'Yay'.  Then about once an hour the person you came to watch races and you put down the crocheting that is difficult to do in mittens and pay attention... in case he crashes.. or in case he beats the high score and could potentially win.

In between these events, you sip hot beverages, visit with other bleacher dwellers, watch your breath in front of your face in the single digit (Fahrenheit) weather and wonder if you'll see your children again because there is no way you're losing what little heat you've managed to find in your blanket cave.

The kids however arrive every hour or two with a free cup of cocoa in their hands and tell how hot they are and that they've made a great snow cave in the mountains of plowed snow.

Patrick however, opted not to wear anything extra.  His coat and gloves over a t-shirt and a pair of jeans with long johns.  He never complained of being cold.  He did drink his share of hot cocoa though... and he didn't sit still.  He kept walking up to the fence to get a better look at the races and then coming back up to check on me.  Sometimes he wandered about and visited with people.  (He said he saw the kids from time to time)

One of the boys friends had come from his tumbling class and forgot his snowpants... he borrowed Duncan's snowsuit... which is actually Miles snowsuit. (so about two feet too tall for him)
The boys were excited to play with cousins and watch a few races.

On the race track they would say that skijoring is a Norwegian sport where a skier is pulled behind either a horse, dog team or motorized vehicle on snow.  It consists of some jumps, and grabbing strategically placed rings... and being the fastest to complete the course.

Oh, and not crashing... which did happen a few times.
Oh, and not falling off your horse.. or being bucked off... which did happen a few times.
Oh, and not letting go of the rope... which did happen a few times.

This year my great-niece, Paigee raced for the first time.  She did the course in just over two minutes.  For comparison... her dad, did the same course in 15 seconds. But she looked adorable in her tiara, feather boa and her Auntie Mardy even wore wings with her tiara... The horse also had a lovely unicorn horn.   She smiled the whole two minutes.

Mardy rode multiple horses and pulled multiple skiers.  She went past like a blur.  I think her slowest time was only 17 seconds.  One horse was named Hidalgo and the other Dollar.  I'm not sure which was which.  It was a long cold walk down to the horse area.  Plus there was a horse that had bucked off his rider and was being very feisty still.

At the end of two long days of racing,  (We only attended one day)  Mardy and Neal placed 1st in one division and 2nd in another.  Then at the end they run a jackpot race where horses and riders and skiers are all chosen at random.  Mardy and her skier (Laura), won the jackpot.
There were medals for the kids, hefty belt buckles for the adult winners and a cash prize for the top three.  Neal and Mardy were smiling all the way to the bank.... except.. that ....

...they were both limping.

Neal took a lot of 'air' on his final jump and landed and rolled.  He took a good bruising but was up on his feet pretty quick.

Mardy's feet however.

Remember that feisty horse.  It never really calmed down.  Mardy was preparing for another ride and the horse was backing up and rearing and it landed a foot on top of Mardy's foot.  It broke through her boot and cut her foot.

Mardy winced and then rode the winning race.  Then.... they had to cut her boot off because of the swelling, plus it was ripped anyway.  The top of the foot turned an ugly green and purple, and they closed up the cut.  She's still shopping around for new boots, but can't try any on just yet.

FYI... Winter sports are best enjoyed every four years for a few weeks in February from the comfort of the living room when the Winter Olympics airs.
It's warmer, quieter, cleaner... has better snack access and you rarely know the people that get hurt.

Wedding Jitters

August 2001
Sparky and Valerie's Wedding.

Caleb took a dive off a stage into a brick wall hitting and inuring only .... his head.

August 2013
Neal and Nicoles's Wedding

Miles attempted to fly backwards off of a spinning chair and injured... his head.

He sustained a cracked skull, and some swelling on the outer head but fortunately he was blessed to have no pressure on his brain.  We also were able to compare his CT scan with the one taken 5 years ago and his head has healed nicely from his surgeries in 2001.  (We'll take our perks or silver linings however we can get them)  He's on Dr.'s orders to take it easy including no computers, physical activities such as PE class or sports and he's to take a break from practicing his instruments)

Please do not get married in August....  it doesn't end well for my children's heads.
I am unsure if this has anything to do with the fact that.....

 August 1994
Patrick and Nova's Wedding

To my knowledge no heads were injured.  But I did eat a bug... accidentally.

Don't get me started on September Weddings and runaways!...

Big Steps and Baby Steps

It's that time of year when some children think they can just up and grow up! Neal, Rhyanna and Jessica are all graduating from high school this week.
Jessica we only met two months ago... so I'm cool with her graduation.

Neal will always be a 4 year old in my mind who rides his bike and goes on adventures in the willow bushes and checks periodically to see if I've baked any cookies lately! I know he's taking the next 'big step', off to college now in ID.

I've known Rhyanna since before she was born. Channa, Bailey and I took the ferries from Hornby Island and drove down to Victoria when it was announced that she had arrived! We couldn't wait to greet the new niece. Now this sweet little girl is grown and has big dreams for her next 'big step' in life. She's looking at Universities back east.

Even Sparky is taking a 'big step'... graduating from UC San Diego with his PhD. Moving his sweet family across the country to the BIG city on the east coast and starting a real job! This doesn't mean that since he's a bigwig government worker with a doctorate that we'll have to start calling him Dr. Graton... does it... I don't think any of us could call him anything but Sparky even if we tried!

I think I'm happy with the upcoming baby steps to look forward to in August. Perhaps it will help me to not focus on the children of my life no longer being children... The thought of even looking at my own children... the teenager, (now officially taller than me!) who will go to his first dance this summer and start highschool this fall!... the daughter who will next week have reached a decade on earth and has more fashion sense than I'll ever have.. my 8 year old scouting boy who does everything full throttle... and until August, my baby who is now reading and doing tricks on his two wheeler and heading off to friends without me...

Sparky turns 18... the other one...

What to say about Neal...

From the time I first met Neal when he was only 3 years old he has shared his smile and sweet spirit. He was always coming to check on me, and see if I needed anything (had any goodies). This boy has a sweet tooth.
Growing up with a brother named 'Sparky' seemed very normal when you have siblings named Channa and Nova, many feel it is a name for a dog but I'd never actually known anyone with a dog named Sparky. My brother earned his name from Spock of Star Trek... so imagine the surprise when meeting Patrick's family for the first time I am introduced to 'Sparky'... and not one of the dogs!

Neal started out life with a few machines to aid him along and keep him going. Being hooked to all this equipment earned him a nickname as a
newborn which he hasn't completely shaken. {Now I must admit it didn't go as far as my poor brother who is still trying to shake it while he earns his PhD, as a husband and father of two... (good luck with that!)} I think the 'Sparky' name stayed a little closer to the ranch fortunately for Neal!

Now there are no flies on this boy... he learned some skills very young. Patrick had him carpentering by the tender age of 4, and I had him detailing a boat of a car, and painting murals. He could already out ride me on a horse, and sure knew his way around the willow trails even when I didn't. But Neal also was a clever sort. He will always go down in my books as the boy who could conceal his meals.

Each morning, Neal would get up with his family and have breakfast, and then as the older crew headed out to school he typically headed on down to Grandma's and had him a few elephant ears that Grandpa had ready for him. After a nice visit and waiting for Joe to be ready to join him, the two boys would be sent out to play... and they made it their duty to come check on Aunt Nova and baby Caleb. As luck would have it breakfast was served at my house on the other side of the 'crik' just about the time a little boy could leave Grandpa's pancakes and head out across the 'crik'. I'm not sure that I always had a great breakfast (some mornings oatmeal, others cream of wheat, or yoghurt and granola), but I do know that one little boy on the ranch was WELL FED by 9:00 in the morning!

Neal has grown into a kind and gentle young man and has a world full of opportunities waiting for him... Happy Birthday Neal.. stop by for breakfast anytime!

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL????

It's football season.... Yes I overheard that somewhere... I wouldn't know it otherwise but this is the best way I can think of to 'kick off' such a season!
Enjoy!
