October Birthday Jeopardy Art

Our birthday beauties!
Pictured above at the age of two.

Our family jeopardy game was this months Art debut for all our budding new sketching skills.  We watched a sketching video and got to work.

A picture says a thousand words... sketching pictures of these birthday beauties said plenty more than a thousand words.  Awe at those with natural artistic talent.  Interest in what features stand out when you are scrutinizing a person's face for sketching.  How varied the sketches can be from the same subject matter.
In all it was a delightful evening of laughter and light-heartedness and we have these delightful treasures forever as a memento.

Cooper and Derek visit

Projects always continue...

But they didn't look much like work this week.

Fortunately.. play definitely looked like play.

Food never ends.
Boys who eat, should be boys who cook.
So they did.

I Double Dog Dare You!!

Just found this post from over a year ago...   Sad thing is... it could just have easily been from yesterday.

Ahhh, the return of summertime and long lazy days...

Reality.. the return of full time extra kids, long exhausting days that fly by before you blink, incessant squabbles over anything, nothing and everything and fantastic moments from the kids that make your sides ache from so much laughter.

The most recent one came in the form of a 'double dog dare!'

It came to our attention on Sunday evening.  The kids had a case of the cooped up all day sillies and we decided to send them outside to run around until bedtime.  As Caleb came up to be the babysitter outside and monitor the racing games, he mentioned that it was good timing since we wouldn't have liked what was going on downstairs.  "I'm not sure exactly what was going on, but the little boys were all getting or giving wedgies."  he said as he headed outside.

Grandma and I, who were sitting at the table as always spending every possible moment pouring over genealogical archives, turned with wide eyes and dropped jaws.

Ummmm...

We summoned inside the first victim.

Duncan's story.
Yes I gave Derek a wedgie but only cause Cooper double dog dared me to.

Cooper's story.
I don't know why Duncan gave me a wedgie.  Oh... Ok.. I told him to give me a wedgie.

Derek's story.
We all gave wedgies.  Can I go now?

I'm not sure if getting to the bottom of things is always necessary.

*Sigh* Raising boys!

Bonne Chance ~ Futball

What to do when a certain young 8 year old attending a week long daily soccer camp needs to do a short presentation on a World Cup team????

Why, choose France of course!  Because we already had the flag.  And his soccer ball sported the countries colours already and there were some great little facts to share about both the country and their soccer (futball) team....

Ohh... and because we can make some delicious and simple croissants to share with the team!

It is just a little bit possible that he was only assigned to come up with 3 interesting facts about a World Cup team.  It is also a little bit possible that he was the star of camp for the day!  And it is entirely possible that we had ham and cheese croissants and nutella filled croissants for breakfast... just to feel a little more French... and it is entirely possible that I only spoke french for the morning.

And it is more than possible that 6 out of 7 children rolled their eyes at me all morning long!  But they did eat their croissants.

What were our great facts???

France:
-It is legal to marry a dead person
-There is only one stop sign in all of Paris
-It is illegal to name a pet pig, Napoleon
-It is the most visited country in the world with 83 million visitors per year
-The French government gives medals to citizens who "successfully raised several children with dignity"
-Tour de France is a famous international bike race in France

L'equipe de France:
-known as L'equipe Bleu or L'equipe tricoloues
-won the World cup in 1998
-formed a league in 1904
-Lost to Germany in 2014 in the quarter finals

The pajamma Gang

On the west side of town,  on the 'other' side of the tracks, there lived the pajamma gang.

Parade of Scouting

Miles riding on the float with the Order of the Arrow.  He was thrilled to be included as Caleb's stand in!

Patrick driving the air conditioned truck that pulled the float.

The scouts carried the flags at the beginning of the parade.  Cooper and Duncan chose large flags this year and were amazing.  They carried them the entire 1.5 miles of parade without any resting.  Cooper said it was an honor to walk with the National Guard carrying the flag and he knew he should carry the flag straight and high.

Whittaker walked about half of the parade and then joined Emerson in the stroller.  Emerson sat and watched the people lining the streets.

What the boys walked the parade, carrying flags in 100* weather for.....

a popsicle at the end!

 Emerson's traveling system.

How do I get the parade route air conditioned? or at least petition for a 6am parade start time!?!
Something is amiss in the planning that the women and young boys walk carrying the flags, the older boys ride on a trailer/float and the men drive the air conditioned truck.....

Snaggletooth

Derek was blessed to have a 'snaggle tooth'.  Not just anyone can claim such things.  He is the only one I've ever known.

What is a snaggle tooth you ask?

It is when two teeth grow as one in the space where two should be.  They either have their own roots but have connected as they've grown, or there is just the one root system.  It appears that Derek has the one root system snaggle tooth variety.

Legend has it that if you are chosen to have a snaggle tooth you will have handsome looks all your life!  So far, Derek is proving that legend to be true, he's one handsome lad!

The legend goes on to say that if the snaggle tooth is just the one root system you can barter with your mother to keep the tooth instead of allowing the tooth fairy to take it.  Channa even offered to pay double the tooth fairy rates when it fell out.  Having said that, Derek was on a mission after it fell out to keep it away from the hands of the tooth fairy.  He didn't put it under his pillow.  In fact, he wouldn't even hide it in the bedroom.  He and Duncan took great thought in how to hide the tooth from the fairy.  They eventually tucked it in a baggie, inside a book on the bookshelf and then placed the heaviest book they could find on top of the stack of books and another one in front of the book.  They weren't taking any chances.  Sure enough in the morning the tooth was still there.  Channa wasn't expected for another two days so each night they changed the location of the book as another method of confusing the fairy.  When Channa arrived, the tooth was safe and sound and she did indeed pay double the going rate for the 'snaggle tooth!'.

The final bit of the legend is that if you have a one rooted snaggle tooth and you are seven years old and it falls out on a national holiday (Canada Day) of either of your national roots, and you lose another tooth within three days on yet another national holiday (Independence Day-USA), you will receive the next thing you ask for AND have good luck for the rest of the week!!  You will be taken camping to one of your favourite campsites AND you get to choose all the meals the following day!

Derek is one lucky snaggle tooth possessing fellow!  We are so honoured to have been witness to the rare event and the fulfilling of the legend.

I personally hope his luck changes a little.... he's running out of teeth and when he chooses his meals for the day they may resemble Whittaker's pureed baby food!!

Violently Vomiting in the night and Evil Camp Dr.'s make Cooper a Happy Lad

We began our week without Patrick, Caleb, Sarah and Miles with a bang!  We decided to clean today and play the rest of the week.  We set a timer for 10 minutes and chose a room.  We all worked together until the timer beeped and then chose another room.  For each room they completed they earned 5 minutes of Wii time for the afternoon.  We cleaned 8 rooms this way and they were all busy little helpers.  It was a fun morning.
Things I learned as we cleaned.

*Cooper likes simple errand tasks best so he became official delivery boy of things we found in the wrong rooms.

*Mackenzie is of course helpful with anything she is assigned...  except perhaps keeping Emerson happy... but that might have something to do with him wanting me and I was not taking him.  She did finally just take him to the other room to play.

*Duncan, as we were cleaning the bathroom commented, "I think I like cleaning the toilets the best!"  We discussed what he liked about it.  He wasn't a fan of tidying up things but actually cleaning and scrubbing was fun.  I gave that boy a dust cloth, broom and a wet rag!

*Whittaker likes to do anything Derek is doing.  They became a team.

*Derek is in my opinion the most cheerful worker in the house.  We awarded him the Top Dog Happy Cleaner award when we were finished.  While Derek was working alongside of me we chatted.  I learned a LOT.  He began one of our conversations with,
"You know what Nova.  I like you now.  Sometimes I don't want to come to your house because I didn't know if I liked you but I will remember now that I do like you.  You are nice to me."

Wow!  He didn't know if he liked me? (What is not to like?)  Cleaning my bathroom created a bond between us that caused him to like me!

Once we completed our cleaning for the day we headed to lunch to celebrate!  Of course I already posted how our celebratory lunch went ... SWAT!

We returned home, shaken and dismayed at society.  The boys took advantage of all their earned minutes on the Wii, Kenzie and I began a fun craft project and Emerson so cooperative now, took a 4 hour nap.

I was feeling good that we could survive the week without the older kids.  I will no longer refer to them as my helpers, I have dandy helpers here with me still!

As the afternoon came to an end and we were discussing dinner and evening plans we decided a movie night would be in order!!  We would head to the library and pick out a new movie.  We had plenty of leftovers so dinner wouldn't take long.  I told them we would leave as soon as I had finished walking on the treadmill with my friend.

Plans change very quickly sometimes.  As I began walking on the treadmill, I began to feel light headed, then a little queasy.  I wasn't increasing my speed as I normally do, instead I felt like quitting.  I walked at a slow pace as long as I could stand it and then I made a dash for the bathroom.  I was sick.  It was so sudden.  We had had a fun filled, active day, how could I be so violently ill so suddenly!?  No time to question it... I continued to be ill for the next 2.5 hours.  Amber took all 6 of the kids home with her and sent me to bed.  I went willingly.  I only woke when the phone rang and she was bringing them home again.  I continued to be ill for about 1.5 more hours.  She tucked each of the kids in and was still here when Duncan began his run to the bathroom.  The flu was hitting in full force.

By morning, both Duncan and I are well again.  A little tired and sluggish but no longer living by the porcelain pot.  Whittaker and Emerson appear to have escaped the bug.  A phone call mid morning notified us that both Caleb and Miles had begun a trek of their own into the woods around 3am.  They were feeling better but Miles it would seem was showing signs that he had bells palsy now.  The Dr. at the clinic at camp was a little surprised that my response to such a diagnosis was... "I guess it's his turn.  He'll be fine.  Let him rest."  I explained that we are no strangers to Bells Palsy and I knew there was nothing he could do for him and that Miles wouldn't be contagious to anyone from the palsy and would be so sad to miss his merit badge classes. I suggested that he find his brother Caleb at the camp who has had the palsy twice and have him hang around with Miles for the day.  The Dr. suggested that I come and pick him up so the rest of the camp doesn't become ill as well.  We are at an impass....  I felt like the exposure to camp has already occurred and sending him home won't change that.  I am waiting to hear back on the decision.  I may be going for a long drive today.

Now I wonder if I should call and warn Sarah's camp.

Our fun plans for today are shot.  I assured the boys we would not cancel all our activities, just postpone them until we could enjoy them more.

Fowl Play

Lately, the thing to do has been to corral the ladies in the trampoline enclosure and hold them.  It's the 'in' thing to do.  I enjoy watching the ladies, but I don't think I'm very cool.. I don't have any desire to sit around the yard snuggling up to a hen.

Derek took to the fun easily and enjoys it.  Duncan often suggests this 'fowl play' whenever his friends come over and I've been bewildered by the excited friends who all seem to want to go play with the ladies.

Cooper was being initiated into the cool club.   Apparently this lady, (a lovely buff Orpington) is a gentle and good first time hen snuggling candidate.

Cooper's initial reaction:  "cough, cough, sputter, sputter...  We need to tame your chickens?"  He held the hen only 5 seconds before it flew into the air briefly and landed on the ground and waddled away.

~"Is everything ok Cooper?  Don't you like the hen?"

"Apparently the hens are dusty and when they flap their wings it shakes the dust in my face.  I should be more careful when holding the ladies."

Dust doesn't sway everyone.  Duncan may be the president of the chicken love club.  Can't you see the adoration in their eyes?

On the 17th Day of December

We had a visit from Santa Claus and his family at the Christmas Pack Meeting.

Always a surprise in the bunch, getting to hear what they tell Santa they want for Christmas.  Derek had a list, a detailed list.  Duncan only mentioned one thing... not what he'd mentioned to me all month... errrgh... Whittaker stood in line and watched how it worked.  Maybe next year he'll speak to Santa.  This year he just sat and nodded his head in response to Santa's questions and then he rang Santa's bells.   Emerson was only interested in Santa's bells.  Santa laughed and shook so the bells would ring.  Caleb was an apprentice elf, entertaining all the children in line waiting for their turn with Santa.

Water Play Jr.

We planned a day at Liberty Park, one of my favourite summer water park getaways in town.  It's a relaxing atmosphere with plenty of exciting and simple fun for kids of many ages.  We determined that for our purposes the under 12 crowd would have a water play jr. day at Liberty Park and I think they had an enjoyable time.  Here they were taking a break from running through the splash pad to make music with water bottles with varying amounts of water in them.

Paddle boats was the surprise water activity of the day for the jr. crowd.  We have been to this park a few times and never mentioned that paddle boats were available.  Our group size meant we needed three paddle boats.  We all compared tired leg and difficult steering mechanism stories when we docked.   The boats weren't exactly kid friendly.  The seats were adjustable but not enough so that the kids could reach the peddles.  We managed to switch driver mid ride without anyone falling in thankfully.

I wish I had a photo of Valerie's crew out sailing.  Valerie ended up kneeling in the back and leaning up front to assist with the steering.  Both of her shipmates needed slightly longer legs for peddling to be more effective.  The paddle boats were fun, but definitely could use some maintenance and or some updating.

I was fairly nervous heading out with Whittaker and Alyssa rear facing and out of arms reach.  It was difficult to maneuver with the life jacket on.   The ride was calm and fun.

By the end I was tired of constantly trying to turn around to check on the two little ones, so Kenzie and I brought them up front and I peddled with one on my lap while Alyssa helped steer.  It made the ride so much more of a work out and less comfortable, enjoyable.

Three 8 year olds cheering us on!
You can't tell from the shore, but I told Whittaker and Alyssa to hold hands, then they wouldn't be able to lean over the side of the boat. They were so well behaved and adorable back there holding hands.

The locals couldn't bear to watch the amateurs on the pond trying to steer the boats.

They finally could stand it no longer.  They set out on the water to show us how it should be accomplished gracefully.

Keeping hydrated was important on this 102 degree August day that we chose to spend completly outdoors!

Not every moment was filled with fun and cheerfulness by all.  In fact it took Cooper over an hour at the beginning to decide that he wanted to take part in any of the water day at all.  Then Derek spent some time at the end of our long day impatiently waiting for a turn on the paddle boats.

Of course, there were some who were so unimpressed by the fun and excitement that they slept through it all.

All in all it was a good day for the jr. crowd... the adult chaperones may have taken in a little too much sun and gone nutso though!
