length of 19"

No bum.

It's time...

A phrase I've never had a chance to utter before going to the hospital in the dramatic Hollywood fashion....

This scheduled in advance business has been a strange thing. With the previous four, it at least seemed to get close and the anticipation of when was still somewhat of an unknown... but this time... I've known the exact time and date for well over 6 weeks... I have an idea of the size and weight due to ultrasounds... we already know the gender (we think... unless Dr. was wrong again!), all that's left is find out if he has hair yet or not.

I almost would like to go into labor suddenly, have my water break naturally or have something be dramatic... Or maybe it's fine to have a relaxed and unfettered or complicated birth planned out. It certainly made for planning all the other arrangements simple. Yes, I'll be at book club Tuesday night, I don't go to the hospital until Wednesday. Not having to surprise Patrick with a phone call during work while he could be unreachable or on top of some beam on a building, instead scheduling a day off in advance. Yes I can help with the triathlon, I know I'll need the substitute in primary for the last three weeks in Aug. .... No surprises, knowing when I'll be gone has had it's perks.

But no baby pool guessing games of what day and time?

So for now... It's time... the baby should actually be born now... I guess when I have access to the computer I'll fill you in on anything we don't yet know... like hair color, if any, and does he have any extra fingers or toes?

When ye are prepared ye shall not fear....

But what happens when you are prepared and then things change?

Like in April when we went to the Dr. appt. and Sarah learned the gender of the baby. She was a very good secret keeper and it took a whole week to convince her to tell us. She insisted that we wait until Daddy came back to town to tell us that we were having a girl! She was very excited.

She and I began picking up sweet little pink items and preparing the baby area. We were feeling quite confident by the end of May that we needed very little else to be ready and now just needed some time to start flying by so we could meet this little bundle that would be swaddled in plenty of pink. We were also still trying to solidify a name although we had narrowed it down to a short list at least. In early June at another Dr. appt. the doctor asked if we had any names picked out yet? We shared our short list and then I asked a question... "So, when you told Sarah the gender, would you say you were 100%? I mean we have a lot of pink at our house now..." He offered to do another ultrasound and give us some reassurance...

Except that it didn't exactly work that way. Instead he said, "Baby isn't cooperating and I just can't really tell... I can't say it is, but I can't say it isn't a girl. Perhaps the baby will cooperate better next time."

Doubt... there is a doubt now? Sarah wasn't concerned. The Dr. just couldn't tell this time, we'd get our confirmation next time. Two weeks of wondering crept by very slowly and we were early for our next appt. The baby was more cooperative this time.... And Dr said, "Did I say it was a girl or a boy?" Sarah quickly piped up with "a girl."... "I hope you can exchange your pink for blue.", he replied. He insists that he'll be very surprised if this isn't a boy at delivery. So, after 10 weeks of preparing for the pink explosion and playing with little girl names, we came home from the appt. rather somber. Not that we aren't excited about having a baby boy. Not at all. We have experience with boys! Sarah was deflated and disappointed though. She truly was looking forward to a sister. We took all the little outfits off of the pink hangers in the closet and folded them up. We folded the little satin pink blankets and put away the lacy bonnets.

At this point it's early July, I'm fatter than I was when I was preparing before, it's starting to get hot and Sarah is certain that we won't be able to find cute boy things like we did so easily for a little girl. We did our best... and she's come around. She'll hold this baby, even if it is a boy now and she's excited to take it for walks in the stroller. It took a little longer to prepare the second time around but Sarah tested everything out thoroughly, the carseat even had to have a doll strapped in and she carried it around. She's folded and refolded blankets, rearranged the changing area a few times and we ended up not hanging the boy clothes instead opting for using the dresser drawers.
I worried that we had set up the crib a tad bit early but it turned out to be a wise move since we had to train the kitties that this was NOT a nice new place for them to sleep. We kept a spray bottle next to the crib and gave them a squirt whenever we saw them in it. They've learned their lesson.. and now we've washed the baby bedding one last time before baby's arrival!

I didn't think it would be a big deal to prepare the 5th time around and instead it seems to have been more fun preparing with the kids than it ever was by myself. Sarah isn't the only one excited to try out all the baby gear. Everyone got in on the action getting things ready. This baby is expected to play with toys on the way home from the hospital, and will need at least three outfits between the hospital and home, according to the hospital bag the kids prepared for me!

I guess we'll know for sure if we are well enough prepared when we come home in a few days and of course if the Dr. knew what he was talking about back in April or in late June.

Apricots, Peaches and Pears... Oh my!

Call it nesting, call it in season, call it insanity... whatever you call it... it's a lot of work!

The apricot tree was ready for harvesting and it was a bumper crop this year. I hated to see them go to waste just because I didn't really want to heat up the house canning.... so I tried my hand at dehydrating. I now have dehydrated apricots and apricot/pineapple fruit leather... although my chickens fared far better than I since they got each batch that didn't quite work out as I learned valuable lessons along the way about dehydrating fruit. Next year ought to be a better year for the yield to improve!

So then it was time for peaches. I hummed and hawed when I saw them go on sale. I decided that with only 1 week to go til due date... I better just be happy with my store bought canned peaches in my pantry storage.... until Channa showed up with 100lbs of peaches and we began processing peaches! They are so much tastier than the store ones!

Then with only 2 days to go until due date... there were 100 lbs of pears ripening before our very eyes.... I feel a little like Bob the builder....'Can we can them?..' .... .... it's not a resounding response of 'Yes, we can!"...but more like the unsure crane 'lofty'... "well I think so."

We did it though. As I reached for the last pear to chop I had a fairly hefty contraction.... I've had quite a few... but they could be braxton hicks... I can still talk through them. And I had plans for going to book club still.

In the back of my mind as I chopped fruit I'm still nesting in other areas and thinking about the laundry I want to have caught up, the floors that should be mopped, and that I should tidy up the playroom and the office and generally get things in order before I leave for the hospital. Even though I know logically that those things aren't more important than resting and making sure that I'm ready to have a newborn in only a matter of days! It's starting to sink in... and also seems very unreal at the same time!

Baby fat

Baby fat, stretch marks, Braxton hicks, swollen hands and feet, heartburn, nausea, fatigue...

All the body goes through to have a baby... it will all be over soon and each time there's a lovely reward for the long slow wait and the discomforts!

I don't take many photos of myself and I definitely don't take many of myself at the end of pregnancy.. but somehow I've managed to acquire at least one from each pregnancy!

Although my starting weight wasn't the same with Caleb as it was with the others... I'll never see the scale stopping at 110 again for me and that's ok... it's still difficult even knowing that it's pregnancy related to find myself in the heavy weight division in the 160's though prior to each delivery! (I know it's not a heavy weight division really.. but when you're only 5'2" and a small build.. it's definitely not the light weight!)

Did I mention stretch marks? These new features of my body aren't likely to fade away... I seriously don't understand how some woman can have a child and not have any or be able to say things like...'I have a few'. My whole belly is a mass of stretch marks, rotating it seems around my belly button! These photos are the only ones I have of me pregnant with Miles and the only time I took photos of the stretched out belly without it covered up...

This next photo was taken only last week. My stomach rubs the steering wheel when I drive, and now that I see this photo... I'm not surprised I can't reach anything, tire easily when washing dishes and my back aches seemingly for no reason... Where and when did that belly come from?!!

I should have been swimming all along though... it felt great to be weightless in the pool and be so refreshed from the hot summer. I even swam a few laps.

Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds have improved over the last decade or so.

They still aren't great digital quality photos or anything but even the average joe can typically distinguish a foot from a face these days.

Caleb
Oh, what we used to think was amazing... and in reality.. the concept of an ultrasound machine and it's ability to view your baby and see it move in real time life is indeed amazing!
Sarah
hmmm... I don't seem to have any.... although that just can't be.... now it's going to bother me until I find them...

Miles
Still very alien looking. I should have asked what each photo was of.... can't tell now.. maybe I could take these old ultrasounds to the Dr. and ask him to identify body parts for me...
Duncan
Only a small sampling... I seriously had tonnes of ultrasounds with this kid!
Baby 2009
By far the most clear photos... I've never done one of those 3D ultrasounds... I have a tough enough time distinguishing who the baby looks like when I'm holding them in my arms and staring right at them. It does appear to be another thumb sucker. Unsure how I'm feeling about that....
Duncan's curiosity and reasonings are always grand and he wondered why I keep it so dark inside my tummy. Will the baby get colourful very quickly after he is born or will he stay black and white for a little while? I was at least able to explain black and white for him by taking a photo of him and then switching the camera mode to black and white and showing that even though his body has colour, the picture is in black and white. We determined that colour baby cameras must just be way too expensive for Dr.'s offices. He also thinks it's a shame my tummy doesn't just have a window in it for looking at the baby easier.. then the baby would recognize him.

I wonder if he'll be as enamored with the baby later this week when it arrives as he has been the last few months?

On the day that you were born....

Having to schedule a c-section in the near future, I had to think of many things in order to choose a date. When am I not quite so busy... what day is convenient, will it impact the kids schedules less one day or another, is it someone's birthday already (not something that has stopped me in the past, but...), does the date roll off the tongue nicely, will I miss anything important if I'm gone for a few days... like book club or the farmer's market opening day... and finally, which day of the week... I already have Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday children, so in my mind those days are out... it has to be a Monday, Wednesday or Saturday... The Doctor said Wednesday works for him during the week in question. So after consulting with the schedule... Wednesday it is! I haven't selected my other children's dates, at least not so far in advance like this. The others I only knew a day or two in advance. But this little poem kept coming into my mind as I finalized the plan.

Mondays child is fair of face,

Tuesdays child is full of grace,
Wednesdays child is full of woe,
Thursdays child has far to go,
Fridays child is loving and giving,
Saturdays child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

I began to ponder on the 'woeful' Wednesday's child and decided I better do some research. Since obviously I can determine this child's destiny with a rescheduling of the dates if I so desire... So here is how it stacked up!

Monday's child is fair of face
Derek, Adriana

Tuesday's child is full of grace
Nova, Sarah, Memo, Sadie, Ava, Channa, Bailey, Jim, Eden
(most of us are graceful, it would seem)

Wednesday's child is full of woe
Grandma, Rhyanna, Dayton, Cooper
(for woeful people... they seem to be smiling!)

Thursday's child has far to go
Grandpa, John, Johnny, Caleb

Friday's child is loving and giving
Mackenzie, Duncan, Alyssa

Saturday's child works hard for his living
Jill, Paige, Denny, Sparky, Patrick

The child born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe and good and gay.
Audrey, Miles, Tree, Marina

I think this child's destiny is going to be fine... besides, what does a little poem from 1838 know anyway? It was only intended to help people remember the names of the days of the week!

Nesting is for the birds!

Why am I steam cleaning the camping coolers, defrosting freezers, cleaning out the bike shed, purging the game cupboard and organizing the kids piano music? Ok, so the defrosting the freezer helped cool me down a little... it's getting very hot!! But the rest... I mean come on... this new baby isn't arriving to do a white glove inspection and isn't likely to even go near the ice chest or join us in a rip roaring game of Monopoly anytime soon!!! Why can't my nesting instincts at least get some more worthwhile projects done!... or at least some baby related project!!! It's not like the dishes are done... standing at the sink hurts my back, mopping the floor needs to be done but that's exhausting... and killer for the back... but I tackle the way out there tasks??

With my other kids... I either baked more... or my mother arrived early and we worked on one of her nice sit down genealogy or computer projects... there is just no question... it must be nesting... in my right mind I wouldn't take on these silly tasks in the heat at this size and awkwardness... so again... nesting is for the birds!

What's larger than an Elephant?

That would be me!

Duncan is ever the source for amusing remarks around here.... I suppose if they came from Caleb I'd threaten to beat him up... but from Duncan it's like seeing into how his mind works so it seems ok somehow.... hmmm

So, we were off to the grocery store and he informed me that "when I'm finished getting fat enough for the baby in my tummy then I can use the special carts at the store for the fat people. The ones where I don't have to walk and he can have a ride too."

I thanked him but let him know that one day this baby is coming out! and hopefully one day soon! Until then I guess I have a new theme song... Fortunately it's a song I like.

Henry Mancini's, Baby Elephant Walk for the 1962 movie, Hatari.
Ironically this was Duncan's favourite movie for about 2 years! I wonder if it had anything to do with the picture of John Wayne hanging in his room?

I know an old lady who swallowed a....

I'm not sure if I can handle going to my next Dr. appt. or at least not taking Duncan.

At my last appointment when I thought I'd be surprising him with there being a baby in my tummy, he surprised me with..."there's a mouse in your tummy"! And then this time... to add to the baby and the mouse, there is a horse galloping around.

Yes this time we listened to the heartbeat. And instead of him mimicking the 'wha wha wha wha' sound wondering what's up with this baby... he just said "The baby is riding a horse! I can hear it galloping!"

So whether this baby is preparing to be the next winning jockey, or rodeo queen or maybe to cause me to panic and age way to prematurely, by taking after his/her cousin Sam....

... whatever this child is doing in there... I have way too many appointments left and I'm afraid of what might show up in my tummy next!
