October Birthday Jeopardy Art

Our birthday beauties!
Pictured above at the age of two.

Our family jeopardy game was this months Art debut for all our budding new sketching skills.  We watched a sketching video and got to work.

A picture says a thousand words... sketching pictures of these birthday beauties said plenty more than a thousand words.  Awe at those with natural artistic talent.  Interest in what features stand out when you are scrutinizing a person's face for sketching.  How varied the sketches can be from the same subject matter.
In all it was a delightful evening of laughter and light-heartedness and we have these delightful treasures forever as a memento.

Jam sessions

Some of our laid back days of autumn.

While Jill was visiting we had many a musical jam session.

She also taught us to make pepper jelly.  mmmm...we're all hooked.  We sent Miles to get crackers but he couldn't find any in the store... as in he couldn't find them.. not that they didn't have any.  We did eventually procure some crackers however these days we discovered that they're really yummy on cucumber slices!  We also mixed a softened cream cheese and a jar of jelly together and it was a great veggie dip.
Long before I blogged... there was a time....  things happened.

I even have photographic proof of it.

It's time to drag them out of archives and make them real... because if there is a photo and it gets blogged with a few words here and there... it really happened.

One of such things was:

  • Caleb used to be little.
  • Patrick used to have dark hair
  • We made a trip to Canada... with only one child.
  • Photos used to be a little grainier
  • Patrick used to wear sweats in public... until I put a stop to it!
  • I used to bowl with style.. (okay it wasn't graceful style... it may be my own style)

What better than a bowling throw to bring back Throwback Thursdays!!

whew, another preserved.

They could pass for sisters..

Jill never seems to age.... one of these days she'll have to share where the fountain of youth is hidden.

Happy Birthday!

A Swinging Good Time - Day 2

There were tree swings, lady bug swings, hammock seat swings and a hammock.  If you ever felt the urge to swing it was covered.  And that urge was strong among all the children, every day, all day long.
Then there was the day the kids decided that Grandma needed a turn on the swing.
Apparently it wasn't the first time a grandchild has tried to swing grandma.  Her nervousness stemmed from having fallen at Eden's (I must get that story!).  I must agree though... these boys 'help', was a bit much.

She may be a hip grandma with style and internet know how, but she's not a swingin' grandma.  This was much more her speed.

Grandma knew her limits, but the kids knew no bounds.  They wanted the ultimate swinging experience.  Derek was incessant.  Ok... almost all the kids were.  So off we went to 'THE BIG SWING'.  The one over the pond!

Caleb and Sarah had remembered swinging over the pond over eight years ago and were raring to go again.

The BIG swinging experience.  An intoxicating rush of adrenaline.  The wind in ones hair.  The screams of joy mixed with a spattering of terror.  The laughter.  The laughter.  The laughter!

It's no wonder the kids were begging for a chance to go on the BIG swing.  Even once they were given the chance, they simply wanted it more.

Except Cooper, who was quite unsure of all this business.  As each took their turn, they returned to Cooper to assure him that it was as exhileratingly wonderful as they thought it would be... or they would say something like... 'it was fun' or 'that was totally awesome!'.  But don't take my word for it... watch and see for yourself!  And be sure to listen to all the people convincing Cooper that he will love it if he'll just give it a try....

Derek had been waiting for his chance.  Having to go with someone didn't even bother him.  As long as he was getting to swing out over a pond at the end of a rope, he was happy.  And happy he was!  Caleb didn't mind having to be the one that gave the rides either....extra rides... woo hoo!

Duncan is brave and willing to give it a try but I love his response when they ask if he wants to go again.... that simple 'yes', says so many things.

Miles is fearless.. always has been.  There was no surprise that he would go.  He stretched his ride as much as possible and often would fake not being able to stop so he could swing one more time.... but we knew.

Sarah, so ladylike in all that she does, but this must have brought out the tomboy in her.  She was beating on her chest and swinging along with the rest of them!

Kenzie loosened up after her first swing.. literally.. she had her arms wrapped around the ropes almost twice for the first ones and then after that she was trying to swing with only one hand holding on and then riding double with Miles... she just needed to test it out and discover that it was a blast!

Channa was the comic relief!  Well not for her but for the rest of us!  In all the efforts to convince Cooper he enquired if she had ever tried the swing.  In honesty she replied that she had not but she would if he'd like her to.  So she did what all us mother's do, she did the thing she feared to do.  She put on the brave face and locked horns with... Caleb and Dayton!  She likely won't do it again though.

Jill took a terrible fall once some time ago.  She had slid off the seat and managed to lose her grip and slid all the way down the rope, burning the flesh on her hands.  I don't know if she eventually fell off and into the pond or into the brush below but I know it was not pleasant and she hurt for sometime afterwards.  It was great to see her swinging again.  She conveniently left the story of her fall out when telling Channa that she had swung before... hee hee..

At last, Cooper gave it a try.  He had watched everyone carefully.  He imitated his mother's 'no, no, no, no' to a tee!  But he had a genuinely happy face when he was finished with his swing.... swings!
And he went again a few more times!

Dayton... or should we call him Tarzan?  And yes... not just Duncan... folks you should definitely NOT try this at home!

Since we wouldn't grant their wish to go on the BIG swing all the time, the kids created their own pond under the ladybug swing and spent many contentious contented hours swinging over their pond.

The kids made up a little song to remember the BIG swing. (think 'Jingle Bells')

Jungle vine, Jungle vine,
Swinging through the air.
Oh what fun it is to swing on a rope high up in the air!

Always to be sung while pounding on your chest with your fists while the kids in the background give a mighty 'ahhhh ahha ahhh ahhh'

There was so much enjoyment with the tree swings that the first thing they asked Daddy to do when the returned to Utah was to make them a tree swing.  Channa even stopped at the market and bought a ladybug and leaf swing to take home.

Hike to the Big Rock - Day 2

After lunch Jill and Grandma took the kids for a special hike.  This sweet little gnome showed the way.

Jill promised them a hike they'd never forget.  They were going to see the biggest rock in the world!
Aren't they just a great hiking group?  The lucious greenery in the temperate rain forest area of the boreal forest (a.k.a. the woods) are a great place to go hiking.

Can't you just feel the excitement of the little boys trying to surprise their Grandma.
Miles was fascinated by the Arbutus tree.  The red peeling bark was intriguing.  He said, "I can see why the ancient civilizations wrote on this stuff... it's almost like paper."
And they made it.  The biggest rock in the world.  The sun was gleaming through the trees.
Jill was correct.  It was huge and the kids won't likely forget their hike to the biggest rock in the world.

A good walking stick always makes a hike even better.  And there were plenty available.

Without the generous donation of Jill's photographs I wouldn't be able to show you this special hike.  Thanks Jill...

....of course I hear there weren't any photos taken when they were looking out over the ocean... near the cliffs edge!

Canada Trip - Day 1

Hello?  Anyone home?

We pulled up to Jill's cabana.  We all fell out of the beast that had carried us to our destination.  We filed towards the cabana in our sleep drunken state.  It was an unusual feeling to arrive at a destination and know that no one was inside.  We knew that Bailey would be at work until that afternoon.  We knew that Jill was coming over later that morning from Courtenay.   We knew that Grandma was coming up from Victoria.  We hadn't located the men on the other side of the bridge, Doug and Dayton yet, but we knew they'd be around if they felt like it.  It was tranquil just the way the island boasts of being.  The welcoming committee would soon arrive, meanwhile we would relax and make ourselves comfortable.

*SIGH*  ahhh

The kids somehow found an endless supply of energy

Five minutes later we began to unpack some things and worked towards the task of having a shower and feeding the vultures who had traveled with us! The welcoming committee did arrive.  They trickled in their arrivals.  The first to arrive was Doug.  After catching up a bit and getting the how to's and do not's of the cabana, he left to fetch some more towels.  (We were a larger crowd than usual)

The rain did begin to dampen our excitement as we remembered that with rain came mud.  The rain actually stopped but it had already reeked havoc on the ground.  The first casualty was Sarah's pants.  She had slipped off of the tree swing and slid down the embankment.  A tiny scratch, and a huge mud bath!  She stripped down on the deck and headed for the outdoor shower.  The pants I'm afraid didn't make it.  No amount of spray n' wash and soaking could revive white capri's after that much mud.  It had been a poor choice of travel attire from the beginning.  I owe her a new pair of capri's.

The second casualty were the shoes.  In an effort to pack light we had only brought the shoes on our feet.  Once caked with mud, we couldn't step indoors without removing our shoes and requesting a cloth to clean our feet.  Sarah and I lucked out on this one.  Crocs rinse off easily and dry quickly.  The boys however had squishy, wet shoes.  All in the name of the adventure!

Dayton made his appearance and if I hadn't been forewarned that he'd grown up since I last saw him I might have fainted away!  Who knew he'd be towering over us all at 17!  He and Caleb headed off to places unknown and much more exciting and grown up than all the little kids and mothers that were currently in the cabana were offering.  (Talk of a t.v., an xbox and not such healthy snacks and they were off!)  (Their loss!  It was a rip roaring game of fish!)

It wasn't long until Jill and Bailey arrived!  I don't recall the order of their arrival.  Bailey had been at work and Jill had come over from Courtney after picking up a few things for the week.  Bailey brought with her the life of the party!  She had such plans for our week.  She kept hinting at a 'party island day'.  We wouldn't have a chance to figure out what she was referring to until the fourth day of our visit.  The kids were all so excited to see Bailey.  Being the eldest cousin, she is known and loved by all.  (Eventually she'll want to be grown up, settle down and have kids of her own, but she's not old enough for that yet... no matter what the silly teenagers at her work tell her!)

Jill brought with her another round of excitement and a bit of sunshine through the trees.  We decided to venture out and head down to the Thatch by the ferry dock.  From the cabana it's just a quick jaunt to the beach.  Some were concerned that it might be too cold, or too wet still from the rain, but off we all went!  Grandma's arrival was expected soon, but we could watch for her as each ferry docked and wave her over to where we were!

Some were concerned about wearing the correct attire at the beach.  Fortunately they weren't concerned about the lack of changing facilities.   After two days of travel and confined spaces, the beach was a very welcome adventure.  The Thatch/ferry dock beach boasts both a rocky area and a sandy area.  The water was a little chilly but it didn't deter the waders.

Some weren't concerned about the attire at all.  They were concerned a bit about learning the beach rules.  'Can we get our feet wet?', 'Can I take my shoes off?', 'Can I just play anywhere at all?', 'Can I bring this shell, this rock, this crab home?'!! They acclimated to life on the beach rather quickly.  They did prefer the sandy section and were impressed with seaweed discoveries.

Some were more interested in beach combing than beach play with the little boys.  Although eventually they did join in with them.  They found some really cool purple clam shells.  (purple on the inside) The wind had picked up a bit and their hair blew this way and that.  Our only girls... will someone please slow down time!

Some were simply there to be amused by every witty thing that comes out of my mouth!
Love the shades Bail!  You are so Hollywood! (talk about slowing down time... she was just a little girl last time I blinked)

Some were too young to be left unattended, too recently a surgical patient to play in the sand or splash in the water and too tired to be kept in the confines of the stroller.  Whittaker enjoyed trying out new laps and exploring the rocks.

Some take a moment every chance they can to reminisce and reconnect as sisters.  It's strange how time can fly by but bonds of sisterhood simply pick back up and it's game on again.  Laughing at each other, with each other and  talking, talking, talking.  Unlike the children who were having a blast without a care in the world on the beach... the ladies were feeling a chilly wind.

Regardless of the reason that one heads down to the beach, time slows down, rules fly away, and fun is had.  Even by me the sand hating witch.

On the way home from the beach, Some have to stop and slay the driftwood dragons!

The kids all swung right into the next activities.  Swings and hammocks were a big hit the whole week!

Not sure how I captured this photo.  It has a strange out of this world look to it.  I chose this vacation to try a different camera (I forgot mine!) and to test out some of the things I'd been learning about taking photos.  One was not to use the flash if possible.  This resulted in MANY of my over 4000 photographs being a little blurry until I understood the concept a little better.  I often would forget what setting I was in and end up with some real doozies!

The old rope swing was still there.  It immediately brought back memories and constant requests for a chance to go on the rope swing over the pond.  Caleb sneaked down the first day just to try it again as a big kid.  Yup, still just as fun!

After a long day of fun, Grandma arrived and the adventure continued into the night!  What a crew we were... and to think it's only 1/3 of us!

Another shot was needed since we missed some folks in the first shot!  Of course others had had enough with photos and left so two are needed to see everyone!  Until I posted these those I didn't realize that Duncan wasn't in any, the little imp.

This toy was a lot of fun... for the first afternoon we were in the cabana.  Then we banished it to the top of the fridge.  It was fought over and in the way and pretty cool too.

After some dinner for a motley crew were some games, stories and lots of visiting.

Some lasted longer than others.  They began to drop off and beds were quickly made up.  Miles loved that he was sleeping under a map of Canada and he could study the map when he woke in the morning to understand where he was.  (study away dude... the small dot that is Hornby Island on that map won't take long to memorize!  Morning might need a different activity than cartography)

Some required snuggles and snacks and convincing to go to sleep!  But when you're almost one and so cute you can get away with it... especially if cousin Bailey is around!

Here's where all the real action was taking place.  The party was on next door.  I heard (since I was in the sleeping house), that there were movies and yummy snacks!  What a way to end the first official day of the Canada Vacation!
