How's it Hanging?

Miles is a professional sleeper.
He is also an avid scouter.
The combination does not always bode well.

Most scouts are typical teenage boys, who when given the opportunity to go camping, stay up until all hours playing in the fire pit and eating junk food.

Miles has an internal clock which must ring so loudly that he has to go to bed in order to silence it.  At 8:00pm almost every night, regardless what is going on around him, he prepares for bed.

Camping with a group of scouts is not an exception.

It is however difficult to maneuver when sharing a tent.

After a few campouts, from which he returned bleary eyed after attempting to sleep in a tent full of rowdy boys, he decided to take his own one man tent.

This made a huge improvement on the enjoyment of camping.

Miles strives for perfection though.

For Christmas he requested a new tent.
A hammock tent.

He was thrilled with it.

He was the envy of scouters at camp.
He slept peacefully.

Except when trees were scarce.
His tent didn't work so well then.
His attempt to hang it at home to enjoy it more ended... disastrously.
(Bookshelf, bedroom, midnight earthquakes!!)

Clearly a solution was needed.
The design was deliberated on and the materials purchased.

The finished product exceeded expectations.
It holds two hammocks at a time and can be set up anywhere.

And by anywhere, apparently that means smack dab in the middle of the living room for over a week.

Apparently a double hammock stand doesn't accommodate everyone.  Miles rarely gets a turn.

Fortunately the rain fly isn't needed in the house. I wasn't sure why the mosquito netting was required though.
I must admit I also found it rather comfortable to lounge.

After a week in the living room I insisted it be taken down.
I must remember to be more specific.

It is now DOWN stairs.

Fireside

Always a fun time at the fireside.  Whittaker is generally the instigator for a cookout in the backyard.  He gets it in his mind that we need one and he asks and he suggests a good time and he suggests a menu... (usually hot dogs).. he starts singing Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog... all the time.. , he pesters  he pleads... and we finally have our campfire night.  For Whittaker, having to wait more than 1 day for something he's excited about is sheer torture.  Sometimes it can be an entire week before all the conditions are favourable for a campfire.  People have to be home.. including daddy..  the weather has to cooperate... and we have to have the evening available.  So many factors that just don't concern him!

Happy Campers

Monday morning dawned bright and beautiful.  The long awaited day had arrived.  My happy campers were off to their different camps.  Miles first week long boy scout camp (sadly his only camp of the summer).   Caleb's final boy scout camp (and he would be an assistant not a boy)  His second camp of the summer out of six!.  Sarah's second and last Oak Crest camp, but only the first of her four camps this year.

Note the yellow t-shirts the girls are wearing in the photo..  Sarah is in the green though.  She received a t-shirt but they only had Large left and Sarah is anything but large!  This photo was from last year.  She had a plan to make her shirt fit better and be more exciting this year.

She was quite pleased with the results!  I was impressed that we finished in time!

Sending them off to camp caused me to reflect on my own partings for camp.  I certainly was not as fashion conscious as Sarah is.

I'm looking forward to how they look when they return in 6 days.  Will their smiles be as bright under all the dust and grime they will certainly be bringing home with them?

Now, what to do for a week without any of my helpers!  (Including Patrick who we sent off to CA the day before)  How will I entertain the remaining 6.  It will seem comparatively empty with only 6 at home....

or perhaps not....
