Details..

It might be fun simply to jog memories with a random photo.
Identify the details.  Names, Places, Events... Story?

Nova, Sparky and Paige (Megan)
At camp.

Toddler is unmistakable.  Is baby Eden?  The clock in the background is familiar and so is the chair.  The lady has a familiar look but ... 'Nina'?  and no idea on the other child.

Forty Faces... Reveals...

I didn't post my references initially so that it wouldn't influence others.
I have a slight advantage... since I've had days to pour over photos... other photos as references... I know which ones I cropped to have only Eden in them and therefore I know more of the details than are shown.
Regardless... these are my recollections.

Forty faces of Eden

The ever changing hairstyles and clothing styles.

The constant smile.

The posed, the candid, the caught off guard.

The moments immortalized.

Each photo a nostalgic pull... and each a story.

Please share.
Some photos tell the story... others only hint at it... others hint that 'there is a story'!
So spill... the stories, or I may just make some up.  And after a while... people will only remember the tale I've spun...  (I'm fairly good at creating believable tales....)

P.S.  Others can tell the stories also... sometimes other perspectives and memories are better!
I hope to hear FORTY stories!

Apparently it is easier to refer to the photos if I add numbers.. so here they are!

1980

We'll call this post 1980.

In case there are those struggling to remember what it was like in 1980... this was 'snapped' to capture us FOREVER!

Does anyone have any memories regarding the photo?  I understand from being told... not from memory... that it was taken in a truck parked on the boulevard at Haultain.

(edited:  not taken in a truck.. but at a studio.. Eden was just days old but coupon was going to expire)

It was the day Eden came home from the hospital or within a few days at least.  Any memories from this day!...  Either the visit to the hospital... meeting Eden for the first time... or perhaps someone had an adventure that day that had nothing to do with hospitals, babies or Eden at all... do tell!

It's Time... It's Here.. .It's Today!!

Today is an auspicious day.

Today is Eden's birthday.

(It's also Miles birthday and Bronmin Shumway's birthday... but they have no bearing whatsoever on this post!)

Today is Eden's 40th birthday!

Growing up... a 40th birthday was an incredibly important accomplishment.

Why?

It has to do with your forties file.
I'm not certain why the age was chosen... if it was arbitrary or not but the phrase was coined and is part of the familial vernacular.  Mum always claimed, "you'll be glad I kept it when you're forty!"... I guess now we see if there was any truth to her claims.

The panic on Eden's face as she approaches the milestone!!
It's not as bad as all that... You look fabulous.... and ....

You've joined this fabulous club!!  Here's all of us at 40 to cheer you up!

Oh... and here's one of mum at 40.

A few years ago... since I had nothing better to do I began a fortiesfile blog.  It's been 8 years since there has been a post... and I can NOT keep that blog alive without assistance.  I think it would be good to keep it going.   The memories are delightful.  The strolling down memory lane for some of us and the introduction to our past for the newer generation.  I've been thinking recently about reviving Friday's as Forties File Fridays and had the realization that with Eden achieving the ripe old age of 40, it is indeed the appropriate time to re-initiate the forties file.

So in honour of forties files...
in honour of Eden's induction into the 'sacred' club,

I give you.... the first of (I intend).. many... more posts.

It's Forties File Friday folks!!

It's about time Forties File Friday returned!  We'll start out simple and easy.  Choose your preferred method.  Answer the question in the comments, send me an email, a text, a photo (with or without a write up!) an old fashioned letter, or a carrier pigeon, give me a call and tell me what to write, post your own blog and link up to the file.  It really doesn't matter. What matters is that you reply in some way... long responses while enjoyed are NOT necessary!

So on with the show.

As a shout out to this years Graduates!!!  CONGRATULATIONS!!

Adriana and Johnny; June 8th, and Caleb; May 31st.

Graduations.  Either your own, your children, your high school, college, university or primary if you like!  For that matter it can be your opinion of all the pomp and circumstance.

Just Yesterday..

Just yesterday, I graduated from high school in Red Oak, TX.  It was my first introduction into the world of caps and gowns.  I had grown up with the expectation that graduation would be the fanciest dress and a night of partying after the graduation ceremony... likely held at UVIC.  Well my final year of secondary education was in Texas.  Cap and gowns were the tradition.

But since we were in the states I had a fancy dress evening anyway in the form of Prom.... an experience I knew nothing about prior to moving to Texas.  Just like knowing nothing of football or homecomings.  But I digress.

Graduation was an interesting affair.  All the pomp and circumstance.  (And a little help with my hair from the ?experts? Sparky, Greg and Carl)

I sang a song (don't remember which one) with a group of Seniors in the choir.  We also attended a Baccalaureate ceremony if I recall.  When the entire event was over, it was over.  I was no closer to knowing what on earth was going to happen next in my life than I was before it began, but I no longer attended high school.  It was strange to graduate with people who had known each other since kindergarten, but I had only known them for a year.  Especially after having attended a much larger school in Victoria, with the same people that I had known since kindergarten.

Oddly enough, I haven't returned to either high school's reunions.  I've preferred to keep in touch with some and move on with life... forward motion.

Oh, and I'm still no closer to knowing what the dickens I am going to do with my life!

May I take your order? -- Forties File Friday!!!

How do you like your eggs?

poached, fried, scrambled, over easy, hard boiled...

When we returned from our travels this summer we discovered that the ladies had continued to lay eggs each day, go figure, and we had a fridge full of eggs.  Patrick said that he had even given a few dozen eggs away already.  So.... we decided to learn which were our favourite ways to eat eggs!

Before I share how that went, tell what your favourite way to eat eggs are!  (I know I lumped this question in with others once before, but I'd like to focus on just this for a minute)

I'll leave you to your ponderings with some wise words from Duncan, "Cookie dough with raw eggs in it is no fun.  I have an idea... let's fry the eggs before we put them in the dough.. then we can eat the dough all we want!"

Forties File Friday -- Poll #3

Haven't had a Forties File Friday Poll in quite some time...

Favourite classic (pre 1970's) Disney princess; Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty?

Forties File Friday -- Sports

The Olympic Forties File Friday topic..

... Sports. Childhood teams, dreams of being a pro at something? wish you hadn't played. wish you had played something else. Humorous memory of a sporting event? Are you still sports inclined or did you feel sports challenged? Do you feel sports were important to be involved in... Did you become a sporting parent? Tell of the sports that have shaped your life.. or shaped your body... Perhaps you prefer to watch sports are you an avid fan of something?? come out of the closet.. fess up do tell we all want to know... do we have a closet curler in the family... or a dream of greatness in turtle races?

I hang my head since I neglected to get my post done....

And the Gold goes to...
EDEN

When I was little I wanted desperately to be in gymnastics and I remember going for a week or month or something, i think it was a free trial. I loved it. When we went to Texas I played volleyball and still truly have a love for the game, despite my height, i am still a major threat at the net!! When we moved back to Victoria, i played basketball in junior high and high school. and although again my lack of height played a roll, i made up for it in heart. Defense and passing were my specialties. I always had to check the biggest threat from the other team. I never had the highest points in a game but I knew i had an important role and my team respected my grit.
Around this time (15) i started to become interested in kickboxing, some popular kids from my school were in it. I got the information packet and showed mum and dad but it was a no go, Peterec's gym unlimited membership for a year more than $1000, maybe wasnt the best starting point.
When i was 20, I lived in an apartment on cook street all by myself for about a year. I missed the exercise and team sports of my youth as well I was feeling a little unsure of what i was supposed to do with my life. I bought my first YOGA vhs and did it in my living room and barely got thru the whole thing but even though it was hard, it was perfect. And it was there, in my little place that I began to explore myself and what i wanted for my body and life. I continue to do Yoga, and buy more movies and attend classes.
After each baby I dabbled in running for the cardio as well as the mental space. My neighbours probably thought i was crazy running in circles around the soccer field beside my house, but it was free and convenient and effective. Even if i was tired and frustrated with the Ava, it offered me a good break to just run mindlessly (or mindfully) for 5-10 laps and then come home 20 mins later, happier!
I finally took a self defense class when I was 28 and just as I knew 14 years ago, I loved it. I continued on taking muay thai kickboxing for 1 year. One day in class the Teacher, mentioned that she would be opening an new gym in jan 2010, and there would be yoga there:) So there it was, i was to teach yoga in a MMA gym. I had been toying with the idea for 10 years and here was my opportunity.

the natural inclination I had for gymnastics at the tender age of 6,wanting to stretch and manipulate my body. the determination I channeled in basketball and volleyball, the awareness I cultivated while running about the importance of exercise and carving out time to care for my body, the discipline and sense of self confidence i got in muay thai, all prepared me for this time of my life, when i am lucky enough to know my passion and make it my work.

Sports have both influenced and shaped my life.

The Silver Medal to...
MUM

this is a hard one... I'm of few words ...and that just isn't my style...is it ? The lack of words goes with the real lack of sports in my life .
As a little girl , I liked to roller skate...and that 'sport' moved into figure skating . I think that is the only sport that i stayed with to ever accomplished any level of real skill.

In school p e classes i had a go at track and field, badminton volley ball , basket and baseball "! none o f which i pursued outside of class. tho i was a good hitter ! I and did stay a spell with long jump and did better at that than I did with high jump.......again the duration wasn't long.

in later years i had a go at the hammer throw , and placed ! at the highland games but that was a limited engagement !

As far as my sports interest..i n the spectator category.. hockey is the only one that stands out . I did play grass hockey for a length of time but only watched ice hockey.
..
If i were to be pursuing a sport now at this stage o f my life it would be archery, horse shoes and tap dancing !

It could be said that i have an interest in any and every sport if I have a personal interest in one of the participants !

And I will honestly take the Bronze
NOVA

I am not what I would consider to be an athletic individual. I did participate in sports as a child, I was a soccer goalie, loved drop kicking, and I was on the cross country running team for a few years in high school. I excelled as a basketball scorekeeper and became skilled at operating the time clock and other electronic (high tech for the day) equipment. But that is the extent of my organized sports involvement. I was involved in highland dancing, and in Texas, drill team... but they aren't really sports.

Now in high school, we were introduced to many different sports. I remember some more fondly than others. I wasn't keen on field hockey, playing basketball or many of the track and field events. I thought baseball was my speed until I was told to stop making daisy chains out in the fields. Volleyball was big since Channa was so involved in it and although I tried out for the team, it wasn't an exciting endeavor either. I did however enjoy the unit in P.E. class that took us to the Rec. center's tennis bubble, and the gymnastics unit.. although not all the stations. I was a dreadful vaulter, disliked the floor exercises and couldn't get enough of the balance beam or the uneven bars! I liked the swimming unit so much that Channa and I decided to try going swimming each morning before school. That worked for as long as I was willing to drag her out of her bed... which she often didn't go for. On days that I successfully woke her and we went it was fun... I never did quite master the spin around at the end of the lane to swim the next lap. I didn't ever become a grand swimmer though. I did swim daily for about 2 years after Duncan was born. I'm an on again off again athlete.

I've done step aerobics, plenty of video workouts, found that I love yoga and pilates and currently get exercise in any time I can, but sports .... well... I'm no Olympian.

I coached a little league baseball team one year for Sarah and Miles. It was a lot of fun.

It has been brought to my attention that I neglected to enter contestant in the Sports Olympics Forties File Friday posting. I received this post orally a full week before anyone else entered!
So the honourable mention PLATINUM medal goes to....

PAIGE!

Against organization. Organized sports, religions, homes etc....

In Elementary, wished she could be the goalie on the soccer team.

Forties File Friday -- A Sticky Situation

A gum chewing girl and a cud chewing cow,
There's a difference I'll allow
It's the intelligent look
on the face of the COW!

Gum has been chewed for centuries.
"The most common ancient chewing gum was tree resin lumps, but people chewed various sweet grasses, leaves, grains and waxes also. Chewing gum has been used in various forms and flavors. The ancient Greeks chewed Mastiche; the ancient Mayans chewed the coagulated sap of the Sapodilla tree; North American Indians chewed the sap from spruce trees…"
Betcha didn't know that!

"chewing gum
users today are chewing a flavoured, synthetic rubber that is non biodegradable."

Doesn't that sound appetizing?

Why do we feel the need in the 21st century to make things artificially without thought to the negative impacts that they may have on us, our bodies or our future generations?

From a colourful attractive dispenser to the sticky nuisance.

But nuisance isn't strong enough of a word for the substance that wreaks custodial havoc, costing millions of dollars to many organizations to attempt to clean up the nastiness. Gum and cigarette butts.. at what point did these become acceptable things to toss anywhere? When did this become peoples idea of ground cover? If I were to partially eat my sandwich and then tuck the remainder of the sandwich that I no longer wish to eat under my seat, on the sidewalk, under the table at the restaurant or smear it on a public bathroom wall so that I no longer had to be burdened with it... I would get stares to say the least. Likely I would get comments, or a ticket for littering. So what is the difference? At least my sandwich might biodegrade some day!! Isn't that what people think when they toss an apple core out of their car?

To be fair, you can create a list of pros and cons to chewing gum. A good debater could likely convince both that gum chewing is good or bad for you. I will not attempt to do either. Rather, I will simply share my findings (cause you know I've been researching it since my initial outrage earlier this week)....

Cons:
  • smacking and popping sounds annoy the people around you
  • shows disrespect in public settings, meetings, interviews, schools, churches etc...
  • chewing tends to gulp in air, creating increased flatulence in chewers
  • increases the incidences of TMJ
can be a trigger of migraine headaches
  • once littered, costs a small fortune to clean up
  • those sweetened with artificial sweeteners can cause diseases, and increase hunger while those with sugar added only reek havoc with diabetes, heart disease, and emotional disorders.
  • sugar sweetened gum increases tooth decay
Pros:
  • alleviates ear popping when taking off and landing in airplanes, or driving in high elevations
  • can assist those who are trying to give up smoking and other nicotine habits.
  • never fear it does not stay in your digestive track for 7 years as many myths of touted
  • can be effective in resisting cravings and assisting in weight loss success (ironically only the sugar varieties)
  • it is suggested that students who chew during school pay attention, and perform better on tests and stay quieter longer
  • alleviates dry mouth
  • claims to reduces heartburn
  • freshens breath (temporarily)
So if the pros list outweighed the cons list in your mind, then bite off a chunk from your shoe and get chewing... for those who the idea of a petroleum based polymer flavoured and coloured chemically is not appealing..... try chewing some fruits and veggies!

As for my own children. I've left the choice to them if they wish to chew. I do not have a hard no chew rule, however, I don't wish to see it or hear it. In the summer I ask them to chew outside, and in the winter I set a time limit so that it doesn't become an all day chewing fest!

While it's true that I grew up with a no gum rule in effect, I'm not sure if that is what made me anti-gum. How come I grew up in a no gum house. Doesn't really matter, I think Mum got made one day and no more gum was decreed, but it really wasn't an issue for me and never has been. I never felt deprived of the stuff. I did not hoard it. I did not choose to chew it when opportunities presented themselves. Perhaps it is because I never developed the habit. Perhaps I'm just a very obedient daughter. Perhaps I just didn't care. But I do now. I am not a gum chewer by choice. Perhaps I just wanted to look smarter than a cud chewing cow.

So there you have it....

Interesting Trivia I learned in my research....
  • Sixty years ago, in an effort to boost gum sales, a single cigarette was included free with the purchase of a pack of gum. Over the years they decided to target children and changed the cigarette to a baseball trading card.
  • The first effort to make a sugar free version that dentists might approve was made with ammonia... to help clean your teeth while you chewed!
  • An experiment gone wrong resulted in bubble gum, instead of just plain chewing gum!
  • In the 1920's, clove flavouring was used to disguise alcohol on a person's breath during prohibition.
  • It became illegal to sell gum in Singapore in 1992, due to the high cost of cleaning it up. It is not illegal to chew it... but if you can't buy it... it's not likely you can chew it!
As promised, I did not read any responses by others until after my own was written. (And thanks to technical difficulties I had to write it twice!!) Any similarities prove my points and any discrepancies prove that my family is crazy. And in the order they were received here are the responses....

MUM

I have to apologize up front.. for a blog response that turned into a chapter! 1800 words.

But it took all of that …………….. to defend myself…

IT ALL BEGAN WITH AN ADDITION TO THE LIST OF NURSURY RHYMES I LEARNED AS A CHILD…

A gum chewing girl and a cud chewing cow….”There’s a difference I’ll allow “

It’s the intelligent look …….. on the face of the cow…

When I was a little girl This was the little rhyme that my paternal grandmother said to me.

Was I at just the right impressionable age.. I don’t know .. but I do know that I had seen for myself the look of the cow . and never forgot the poem . I didn’t understand the twist of the idea of intelligent look..meaning the girl would look even less intelligent ( no offense to the bovine community ) . To me I just thought I didn’t want to look like the cows mouth when it was ‘cud chewing’..

This was enough for me to say no thank you to gum tho’ I believe it was rarely offered in the culture of my small world. Probably as I would be surrounded by people of the same generation and attitude as Grandma. I don’t believe there would have been much challenge to me …

Never the less, when I was a young teen, this negativity to gum was reinforced … It was encased in a theory that it could be used to identify one as an American.

1. We were a city, on an Island that was a great attraction to tourists. In the summer it was men in flamboyant colorful Bermuda shorts… seen in town whenever a ship from the U S docked in our inner harbour..Canadian men (and Brits) could be found wearing knee length shorts also ……. but in khaki color. And not worn in the percentages of the U S men….( to be fair, those visitors were on ‘ vacation (a U S word as we use Holiday, a word that is not nearly as accurate as the U S word. Just one more difference between “Americans and “Canadians” our words and our spelling). Canadians are a little sensitive to the adage we often hear from south of the border ‘Canadians are just Americans in the north and in a colder climate “ We don’t think we are.

Back to topic Gum…..

2. And more pointly , Americans could be identified by gum chewing.

A) This would be seen of course in the above Bermuda shorts clad men.

B) It was also seen when there would be school exchanges with students.. In class, they would be miffed that gum was not allowed in our schools… consequences would be detention and essay writing .

C) My city , Victoria, was listed on the circuit that qualified parade marchers and marching bands. As a result every 24th of May parade day we had bands arrive from US cities, ‘Never fail to have them come from cities in Washington, Oregon and northern California… We would see them parade by us .. a host of gum chewers marching in perfect precision except for their mouths… and lovely girls in beautiful gowns or swimsuits on floats spoiling their sweet smiles with the cud chewing look.

Then, When I was a young woman, the emphasis from the Dental community was emphatic that the added risk to tooth decay was to be blamed in large part to gum chewing.. Was it the grinding of the sugar into our teeth.. or was it the constant entry of sugar in the mouth as new sticks of gum were used by chain gum chewers I never knew….. This revelation impressed both consumers and manufacturers.. The advent of sugarless gum burst forth to meet the demands of more conscientious chewers.. and advertised enthusiastically so as not to lose a market..

When I was a young bride , and moved to the US and saw the prevalence of gum chewing it was so noticeable around me from my ‘sheltered child and youth hood” that I found it shocking… then in time it became commonplace, then almost acceptable to the point that I decided to try to be a gum chewer… I emphasize the word ‘try’. I found it to be ‘work’… my mouth was in constant motion while still trying to keep from looking like my lifelong vision of ‘that cow’. I became physically tired with all the jawing… It just wasn’t for me..

I watched when there would be a television ‘interviews’ and the interviewee talked between chews and when they would slip the gum aside.. they’d need to come up for air (so to speak) but the interviewers were always non chewers… as were news anchors and commentators.. or those hired to be in the public eye… I assumed that their companies and institutions were as my school days.. with the ‘no gum allowed’ rules…

Then the days came when I was a young mum. With small children and me in charge of the family purse and the grocery cart….gum wasn’t an issue.. However, I soon lost control when birthday parties of friends gave ‘gum’ as treats .. Then additional gum in favour bags (see as mentioned above, we spell favour not favor ). Kindergarten teachers would use the dispensing of gum on special occasion .. and ! ! as rewards and bribes ! ! !

I shudder when my memories of my childhood clashed with the reality with my own children’s’ culture…

However, when in Rome…………….. I eventually succumbed to the losing battle. and lifted my internal ban and that on the children.

UNTIL

A series of events

1. I became not only frustrated but intolerant with gum being stuck to pillows and blankets… but when it was ground into hair I found that even more annoying. !

2. When we were out visiting and the children were enjoying play with the cat of an older lady, and gum ( she had given the boys!) ended up in the fur of said cat.. The little ‘responsible’ boys gave their best efforts to trying to remove it … Inside the house ..older lady and I , heard a couple of dreadful cat squeals. We ran out to the deck in time to see the boys trying to contain an unwilling feline, making every squalling effort to escape having her fur being pulled by unskilled and desperate hands..

3. It was just a week or so later , after another birthday party favour bag…that I found myself in the laundry room taking clothes from the dryer… I love doing laundry but it was dreadful task that day… Gum had been in the dryer and latched itself around buttons ! and worst of all , in the hot metal zippers!!!

That was the last straw.. or the last stick ! ! My voice lost more than Gum Control… with decibels high and face intense with eyes like moons and eyebrows arched like the arc de triumph . my words went out thru the halls of the house..

“THERE WILL BE NO MORE GUM IN THIS HOUSE UNTIL YOU ARE 8 “.

That was the end of gum . Somehow, the children knew not to issue requests .. and knew to say no thank you when offered, to check the favour bags or school treats and remove them to give to others… The age of 8 just came out without thought. It could have been 18 ! or 28 ! but 8 is what came up and out .

I don’t recall having to reiterate the rule over the next few years.. in any strong measure. My loud announcement must have penetrated the genes o f even the later children to come… or perhaps there was an underground warning system as siblings were about to reach of supposed ‘gum age’.

While these above children were still little , we moved back to Canada , and away from the gum worries.. or so I thot until the one day I was in the bedroom of a later child , a seven year old s dresser drawers.. I rarely had needed to put laundry away for her . as the children all delivered their own folded items from the laundry area.. however, This day, at the back of the drawer, I found a cache o f gum… This turned out to be a 4 year collection ! Why was it collected and why was it there ? It represented many party favours, and Halloween treats that she obediently tucked away… A law abiding girls dream of the day that she would turn 8. I wonder how she envisioned that day, would it be of her delight with a mouth full of mighty stale sticks of gum…

Her dream wasn’t to be shattered.. An older brother advocated for her and in a little meeting wherein I had to stifle my smile and chuckle while expressing admiration for her adherence to the family culture…Older brother negotiated a compromise…

Would the gum patrol mum agree to the ' jeune fille' having permission in this last year before the ban would be lifted, for her , upon turning 8, to chew gum once a month… How could I refuse,? especially after stipulating that it was to be done on the first day of the month.. only… If she missed that day…. another month would be the wait… AND the gum was to be chewed in private..so as not to be ‘flaunting ‘ in front of the younger and still limited children..

Agreement reached ! Outcome…? This young lady was diligent with the first of the month for the first few months ……………… and then the novelty wore off. I’m sure sitting in isolation with the sole purpose to ‘chew’ would not be the thrill she had dreamed it to be.

General outcome for the rest of the children for the rest of the years….? ? All now are adults.. and I’ve never seen any of them ‘chew”. Not even when the eight year requirement came to be removed… Those first 8 years must have squelched the desire or at the least … not instilled a habit..

How it effected their lives and psyche …. I never asked.. I can no longer hide behind ‘the long ago curtain…

However , NOW.. Nova has put the question on the floor and opened it up for discussion…
We will be hearing from all 8 children and all 8 experiences….she has broadcast an invitation to all to send to her their memories and experiences.

MY QUESTIONS

1. Grandma ( 1885)?.. has your little poem and vision carried down unto the fourth generation ?

A gum chewing girl and a cud chewing, there’s a difference I’ll allow, It’s the intelligent look on the face of the cow.. How many of your more than 75 decedents have heard this mantra.?

2. Am I about to learn of clandestine gum chewing? during those nearly 40 years, from first child born in 1962 till the launching of the last in 1998 ! or to learn of their years of resulting trauma or deprival syndromes?

3. Am I about to be pleased with the results my mothering and child raising…? or will I be putting myself to pen and paper to extend apologies.

While I wait fo r the results of the polling,, please pass me a stick of GUM to see if will calm my nerves….…

forgive me Grandma and my eight, for even having that thought !

JILL
Gum.... when i think of Gum, I think of Channa... Channa seemed to be the only one in the family that had an issue with the Gum Law.. As I recall, after much lobbying and protest demonstrations she successfully had the law amended in the mid- 70's. The pre-existing complete ban was appealed and successfully lifted, to a more reasonable , attainable guideline. The new gum Law now stated that "one could engage in responsible gum chewing activity ( *see archives for complete definition) once they had reached the magical age of eight.."
you see it was common knowledge that by the ripe old age of eight, one was perfectly capable of knowing right from wrong, and therefore knew all about " choosing the right".. so they should no doubt be able to handle some gum chewing without it getting stuck in their hair or carpets or cats.....
Now,, as I recall more on the subject, I believe that Channa, after further campaigning , ( or complaining! ) she once again managed to have the powers that be, lessen the perimeters of the anti-gum law. She managed to negotiate a special clause that would permit the chewing of gum on the first day of each month. This was in attempt to prove the level of which the child was able to chew responsibly, as well as address the issue of " hoarding".. After several years of hallowe'en caches and birthday party loot bags (from familys with no apparent regard to under-age chewing) the sheer logistics of bedside drawers stuffed and overflowing with the forbidden treat was a problem in itself.. not to mention a potential rodent hazard. So one was able to legally chew away to their hearts content one day a month, provided that the master of the homestead did not " see or hear" the gum.
*note* further to the new ammendment.." if the 1st day of the month came and went, the chewer was to forfeit the ' gum day' until the next month.. I dont believe channa ever let that happen..
Some of us, like myself, didnt care about gum. I was quite happy to trade mine for reese's peanut butter cups..
I have always felt that gum chewing was over-rated, it often hurt my jaw, especially the double bubbles, they were hard squares and took a lot of chewing before the were soft enough to chew freely.. but by then my jaw was to sore to enjoy anything..and the comics that were enclosed in each wrapper were never funny.. a marketing ploy i presume, to get you to buy the stuff..
i do recall tho, blowing my first bubble. i was in auntie adele's driveway, in their back lane playing with kara and hil. For some reason, i give kara credit for teaching me, maybe it was just because she was there,. i am not sure.
As an adult I rarely chew it, on occasion i will accept an offer of a stick of gum.. but i dont 'stick with it' for long, and then i have to deal with disposing of it whilst driving , or at a restaurant..ughh. it's usually more trouble than its worth...
So naturally, i wasnt a gum mum... however, i did start putting packs in stockings at xmas , as the kids got a little older... well over the age of eight !!

I am like an island. The Hawaii kind, not Alcatraz. Things don't happen around me that are annoying more than once. It's only pleasant things on my island. Tapping, leaning back on your chair, chewing your food loudly or with your mouth open and obviously having to see or hear your gum are the sorts of things that DO NOT OCCUR in my little island world.

Forties File Friday - Earliest memory of home

For me that would be Haultain House... I simply have no memory of Chaucer Street house.

  • I remember the nursery, of the old fashioned variety where we four youngest lived together until one late night when I was summoned from my bed to come check out my new 'own' room!
  • I remember playing games like, 'don't touch the floor' going from upstairs to downstairs, (sliding down the banisters and jumping to pieces of furniture)
  • I remember a doll house in the hallway by the linen closet.
  • I remember an air hockey game and the dress up trunk in the upstairs hall.
  • I remember trips to the attic for costumes
  • I remember the door at the bottom of the stairs and when it was removed opening up the stair way and 'well' to the downstairs hall.
  • I remember a well decorated Halloween sunroom.
  • I remember push button light switches
  • I remember learning that there was another window in the playroom behind the bookshelves!
  • I remember looking out the Nursery room closet window and watching the street below
  • I remember windows that wouldn't open more than a few inches, and blocks that had to be propped in them to keep them open.
  • I remember doing my hair in the galley off the kitchen
  • I remember reading the poems hanging on the wall in the main floor bathroom, Rudyard Kiplings, IF, dedicated to girlhood, and Laugh about a trouble.
  • I remember flushing Jill down the toilets and rushing to find her in another bathroom.
  • I remember pedestal bathroom sinks and the upstairs bathrooms, with the toilet in a separate room from the rest of the bathroom.
  • I remember Dad's little office cubicle coal bin.
  • I remember hot water radiators on cold winter nights and laying a towel on them to have a warm towel when you got out of the bath.
  • I remember a linen closet that held everything! To have such closet space!!
  • I remember playing badminton and croquet in the front yard
  • I remember never really using the front door... Even before we finished the basement, or lived in the basement during the remodel... we always came in from the basement door!

Forties File - Grandparents

Since going to Portland is essentially visiting grandpa's for us... and I had responses to that effect from Valerie and Patrick I thought I'd post them separately here...

VALERIE

I loved holidays at my grandparents. We would do our Easter egg hunts there, and Christmas Eve. We had all sorts of Christmas Eve traditions. We did a Pinata, had a ornament hunt, a wonderful dinner, but the best was the Christmas Pageant. All of us cousins would dress up and put the pageant on together. Thanksgiving dinner was another wonderful day. My Grandmother would cook all day, and the smells and tastes were divine. My Grandparents had a fabulous play room, and we would play with our parents old toys (Barbie dolls from the 60s with bobbed hair) and watch TV while using my Grandmother's exercise equipment. One of us would be on the rowing machine, another the treadmill, another the stationary bike and another the trampoline. We would play pool, making up our own rules, as we had no idea how to play, and could barely lift the cue sticks. We loved chalking our cues. We loved watching all of my Grandparent's movies, "Charlotte's Web," "Pippi Longstocking," and as we got older all of the "Road Tos" with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, and "Alfred Hitchcok Presents." We enjoyed trying to pick out his cameo in the episode.

PATRICK

By the time I arrived at the ranch my grandma nini (nee nee) was living in an apartment in pinedale... I visited her a few times there... she fell and we moved her into the retirement center but an apartment type living situation... with partial care... I visited her every sunday for a long time... we took her the sacrament.. and then after church always went for a longer visit... probably until she died.. actually she got very sick just before she died about three months and she was moved to another section of the retirement center for more care and us kids didn't get to visit down there except a couple times for a few minutes.
She was all together her faculties... sharp as a tack... we had nice visits... she had a candy dish and we could help ourselves to mini chocolate bars.
(note.. the retirement center is across the street from the chapel.)
my dad's dad had already died before I came to the ranch

Forties File Friday - Going to Portland

  • The ferry ride and the long drive to Portland... arriving late at night to drive up the narrow, winding road up the mountainside. Being frightened that the van would one day not make it around one of the corners or that Dad would finally fall asleep at the wheel after the long drive and we'd end up careening down the hill.
  • Familiar landmarks... yardbirds and ice cream... the big bridge in the big city... then the bottom of the hill, the ghost house that fell down a little further each year, the hayward farm on the corner and finally the fork in the road at the mailbox to go up to the house.
  • The story of leaving Channa behind at the store ..(yardbirds or Hanks?)... don't remember it firsthand though.
  • I remember a Christmas at Portland I remember opening something wrapped in a brown paper bag... don't remember what... and receiving a sweater that grandma must have knitted on her new knitting machine.
  • sleeping on the couch that folded out I remember the couch that folded flat different than any other hide a bed .. and we could lay on it while it was being unfolded like a ride.
  • when the addition was built and falling out of the top bunk in my sleep but not waking
  • picking berries , and making applesauce
  • setting the table
  • being old enough to go to the barn alone
  • wandering the property
  • being stung by bees
  • throwing things over the hill
  • pop and ice cream breaks
  • cats and kittens and nighttime feeding rituals
  • Shaggy the dog!
  • riding in the back of the truck filled with hay to the hill to feed cows.
  • the year they dug the well, learning about witching for water with a stick.
  • salt on thistles
  • Eden's hand in the barbed wire fence
  • watching a calf be born
  • trying to figure out Nancy's age and being told "well preserved for 90"
  • visiting with great grandmother and learning to tat and crochet
  • walking down to the mailbox to check for mail
  • going down to the treefort the pigpen
  • reading books.. new ones came each summer
  • shopping in town with grandma and Nancy... first jean jacket
  • the year Sparky was supposed to write 1000 lines
  • mexican hamburgers
  • computer games
  • watching the music man
  • sleeping under the kitchen table
  • sneaking just the right moments to play the piano in the little room between the house and Geneva's room.

Forties File Friday - What's in a name?

What is something that other people use more than you but it is most definitely yours!??

Your name. So what is in a name?

My name is Nova-Gayle Beth. It wasn't always so easy to come up with my name though. As I've been told I was referred to as 'the baby', 'the girl', and likely numerous other terms until I was nearly 6 months old. Naming me, a 5th child, was apparently too daunting a task. The baby book has pages of proposed names for me. My Grandpa Stonehouse used to tease that if they didn't name me soon they would name me after the Premier of B.C. at the time. His name was David Barret. So for a few years... Grandpa referred to me as Davida Barretta.

My middle name was given to me by my older brother Jim. He had a crush on a girl in the 5th grade named Beth. After naming John, Jim and Jill, Mum must have let loose with the names because we all ended up with longer than average monikers. Nova-Gayle being hyphenated made it seem very southern and it really was only my Aunt Nancy and Grandma Byrdie that used both names. I was never a big fan of Gayle or the hyphenated business.. but it flows.

My name means, 'newest joy'... I think it must have been a joy to finally be named!

I didn't have name related nicknames that I didn't like... Novidiac and Novy aren't too bad... I suppose being the 'Avon' lady because it is your name backwards could be annoying but I didn't even mind that... not everyone has a cool name backwards! It's always those pesky Jim nicknames that have nothing to do with your name that you have to watch out for!

It is uncommon so I do still get comments on the unusual nature of the name but it's fine.... Especially now that it's Nova Noble... (say it fast five times and you'll wonder where the turkey is gobbling) I haven't met another Nova although I do know that they exist... I believe typically they are Italian or Spanish... and often male!

My children's names. Such angst and thought have gone into the names for my children. I try not to set them up with odd names that will be dated too soon or names that will lend themselves to nicknaming. I also don't tend to do names that will be shortened. The name is what the name is! I prefer classic names to new fangled ones, but not ones that are too common.... Although I must admit Caleb and Sarah are relatively common names, but I spelled them classically.

Caleb Daniel was Tayanna or Emmett until 2 weeks before he was born when we found out for the first time that we were having a boy... Tayanna was quickly tossed... but for some reason so was Emmett. Patrick still thinks we should have used Emmett. But Caleb just didn't strike me as an Emmett. The name Caleb hadn't even been bantered around but when it hit me, I just knew that he was a Caleb. Daniel is his middle name like Patrick's.

Sarah Kristine. There has never been any question from the time I had an inkling, mother's intuition type of feeling that I was having a girl that her name was Sarah. We even began referring to her as Sarah when we discussed her before she was born. I never recalled seeing my baby book with the pages of baby names that were considered for me when naming me was so difficult, but I did shortly after Sarah was born and I found it ironic that the name Sarah was a name that was considered in many combination with different middle names for me. Kristine is the name of Patrick's biological younger sister whom we were still searching for at the time that Sarah was born. (Of course years later when we finally found her we learned that she had changed her name from Kristine to Katherine... but so goes it)

Miles Chase was Benjamin Fraser from the time we found out we were having a boy until the day we arrived at the hospital. Sarah even introduced us to our new neighbours and informed them that "Mummy is having a baby, Benjamin Fraser, and I will get to hold him."

I really can frustrate Patrick! He thinks it's a done deal and then I just up and say... well, umm... actually... I've changed my mind! The four days in the hospital after Miles was born were spent hashing over names lists! Once I had decided on the name of Miles definitively, I told Patrick to come up with the middle name. Jill had been present for Miles labour and delivery and had been included in much baby naming discussing. Patrick decided to remember Jill's prescence at the delivery by choosing Chase as his middle name. Chase also being Jill's son Dayton's middle name! (Chase was definitely appropriate after the day of labour and delivery... the Dr. chased him around in my womb all day trying to convince him to cooperate and stay in one position!)

Duncan Levi was once again a name that was meant to be! From early on in that pregnancy I was put on bed rest and perhaps it gave me extra quiet thinking time because Duncan was named early on. Again we discussed him by name with the kids before he was born! It was quite a surprise that the entire neighbourhood didn't know what his name was before we knew what his birthday was. Interestingly... while I was pregnant with Duncan, a friend who lived only a few houses away, was also expecting a son... (Sarah and her son got together frequently) and they also knew from an early time that his name was Duncan... of course neither of us mothers were aware of this until after our Duncan's were born... a month apart from each other! The two Duncan's have been best of buds for over 5 years now!

???? ???? ahhh.... hopefully after the Name that Baby game I'll know what name to put here!! Of course if history repeats itself and this is a 5th child thing... maybe I'll just go ask Sarah if there are any 5th grade kids she really likes right now?

Patrick was born Patrick Kevin. At adoption he was told he could choose a name and he changed his name to Patrick Daniel. The intrigue however is that Patrick's youngest biological sibling whom he didn't even know existed until last summer is Forrest Daniel. What ever made Patrick at the age of 7 choose the middle name Daniel which would be used 3 years later to name his sibling?

He has pretty much always gone by Pat until he met me!! After finding his biological family we learned that Patrick comes from a long line of Patrick's... I guess Caleb should have been a Patrick... ooops!
